14 | THE VILLA’S VOICE | MAY 2017 What’s Cooking? Dinners • Parties • Recipes Photos: Michael Dorfman

ON April 20, 2017 The Villas at Five Ponds Cooking Club “#1” held an Asian theme dinner in the Ballroom. It featured home cooked appetizers, entrées, On-The-Go and desserts that were deliciously prepared and handsomely presented. rief ites The gracious hostess team—pictured directly above—included (from right to B B left) Lana Skwer, Eileen Linton, Sharan Rodgers, Marcia Hyman, Paula Leder, Penny Barenbam, and Randy Rosen. (Additional event photos, page 16.) GOT A BEEF? SOMETHING’S (NOT TOO) FISHY… n Ron Dorfman RECENTLY, we visited the new King of Prussia location of Fogo de Chãu, an international chain of steakhouses featuring the Brazilian grilling technique of churrasco. Previewing the menu on their website, we saw interesting fish dishes along with their meat selections. Upon our arrival (a Saturday, 6:30 PM reservation) we caught only a slim bit of smoked salmon on the cold table. No fresh fish, and much disappointment through- out our meal. A Shrimp cocktail was available at an upcharge. Grilled fish for limited meat-eaters was nowhere to be found. We’ve been to other Brazilian steakhouses (Philly’s Chima; Horsham’s Na’Brassa; and several in the Los Angeles area). All are usually fun and often far more inclusive. Meat cuts here were plenti- ful and varied from tender to tough. Lamb chops were dried out and overcooked. After requesting “pink” chops, a gaucho returned with slightly better fare. Don’t get me wrong. The servers were excellent and attentive. But the place leaves much to be desired. Hot vegetables? A small plate of good garlic mashed potatoes to share, along with a tiny basket of bite-sized mini-popovers (one per person at first), and a few good caramelized bananas. The Market Table (aka Salad Bar) presentation was weak— including a plate of sliced tomatoes and a bowl of lettuce (wow)— Most items had no identifying tags. Soup? One pot was offered. My guess: a thin butternut squash. No tags on items? Mystery selections? Come on. They certainly can do better. My “house” Merlot, at $11 a mini-shot was skimpy and available across the court at Wegman’s for $6.99 a bottle. Dessert selections were all á la carte. Not even a cookie or a mint to finish the meal? No refill offered on coffee? At the same price, an enjoyable full sit- down beef dinner is available from several fine nearby restaurants. Fogo de Chãu, King of Prussia Town Center (near Wegman’s)
