Prey preferences and feeding-related behaviour of a Central European species of Scydmaeninae, Euconnus pubicollis, were studied under laboratory conditions. Results of prey choice experiments involving 50 species of mites belonging to 24 families of Oribatida and one family of Uropodina demonstrated that beetles feed mostly on ptyctimous Phthiracaridae (over 90% of prey) and only occasionally on Achipteriidae, Chamobatidae, Steganacaridae, Oribatellidae, Ceratozetidae, Euphthiracaridae and Galumni- dae. The average number of mites consumed per beetle per day was 0.27 ± 0.07, and the entire feeding process took 2.15–33.7 h and showed a clear linear relationship with prey body length. Observations revealed a previously unknown mechanism for capturing prey in Scydmaeninae in which a droplet of liquid that exudes from the mouth onto the dorsal surface of the predator’s mouthparts adheres to the mite’s cuticle. Morphological adaptations associated with this strategy include the flattened distal parts of the maxillae, whereas the mandibles play a minor role in capturing prey. -

September 1997 Specimens representing 19 orders and 169 arthropod families (mostly insects) were collected from greenleaf manzanita brushfields in northeastern California and identified to species whenever possible. More than500 taxa below the family level wereinventoried, and each listing includes relative frequency of encounter, life stages collected, and dominant role in the greenleaf manzanita community. Specific host relationships are included for some predators and parasitoids. Herbivores, predators, and parasitoids comprised the majority (80 percent) of identified insects and related taxa. The association between domatia-bearing plants and mites has been proposed to be mutualistic, and has been found to be important in species of economic value, such as grapes, cotton, avocado and coffee. This is because leaf domatia affect the distribution, diversity and abundance of predatory and mycophagous mites found on the leaf surface. As a result, plants are thought to benefit from increased defence against pathogens and small arthropod herbivores. This study assesses the relative diversity and composition of mites on an economically important plant host (Coffea aribica) in comparison to mites found in a neighbouring indigenous forest in South Africa. Our results showed that the coffee plantations were associated with only predatory mites, some of which are indigenous to South Africa. This indicates that coffee plantations are able to be successfully colonised by indigenous beneficial mites. -

Abstract ─ The soil-litter system is the natural habitat for a wide variety of organisms, microorganisms and invertebrates, with differences in size and metabolism, which are responsible for numerous functions. The soil mesofauna is composed of animals of body diameter between 100 μm and 2 mm, consisting of the groups Araneida, Acari, Collembola, Hymenoptera, Diptera, Protura, Diplura, Symphyla, Enchytraeidae (Oligochaeta), Isoptera, Chilopoda, Diplopoda and Mollusca. These animals, extremely dependent on humidity, move in the pores of the soil and at the interface between the litter and the soil. The edaphic fauna, besides having a great functional diversity, presents a rich diversity of species. As a result, these organisms affect the physical, chemical and, consequently, the biological factors of the soil. Therefore, the edaphic fauna and its activities are of extreme importance so that the soil is fertile and can vigorously support the vegetation found there, being spontaneous or cultivated. The composition, distribution and density of the edaphic acarofauna varies according to the soil depth, mites size, location and the season of the year. -

In this paper, a new family Cocceupodidae, and three genera, Cocceupodes, Filieupodes gen. n. and Linopodes, are diagnosed. An identification key separating the genera and sixteen species is presented. Two new species, Filieupodes filiformis and F. filistellatus, collected in Poland, are described and illustrated. Key words: acarology, taxonomy, new family, new taxa, morphology, Poland. InTroDUCTIon Mites regarded as belonging to the genus Cocceupodes THOR, 1934 are most frequently observed in different soil habitats, just after representatives from genus Eupodes KOCH, 1835. Together they are classified within the family EupodidaeK OCH, 1842 which has been poorly studied and includes species of a very diversified features. So far eight families have been distinguished in a common superfamily Eupodoidea BANKS, 1894 (KOCH 1842, according to QIN 1996). The following families have been listed, viz., Eupodidae KOCH, Penthaleidae OUDEMANS, 1931, Penthalodidae THOR, 1933, rhagidiidae OUDEMANS, 1922, Strandtmannidae ZACHARDA, 1979, Eriorhynchidae QIN et HALLIDAY, 1997, Pentapalpidae OLIVIER et THERON, 2000 and Dendrochaetidae OLIVIER, 2008. The diversity of the Eupodidae, Penthaleidae and Penthalodidae is extraordinary, while the rhagidiidae, Strandtmaniidae and Pentapalpidae are homogeneous as well as the Eriorhynchidae with one genus and five species. Strandtmaniidae, Pentapalpidae and Dendrochaetidae have been distinguished based on one species. The key to the families of the superfamily Eupodoidea can be found in the works of ZACHARDA (1979), 638 KatarZynA JESIonoWSKA QIN & HALLIDAY (1997) and OLIVIER (2008).
