Correspondence on the Discovery and Original Investigations on Kuru Smodel — Gajdusek Correspondence 1955-1958 / l(V*-f Correspondence on the Discovery and Original Investigations on Kuru Smadel-Gajdusek Correspondence, 1955-1958 Edited by D.C. Gajdusek Study of Child Growth and Development and Disease Patterns in Primitive Cultures National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke National Institutes of Health Bethesda, Maryland April, 1975 k PREFACE These letters speak for themselves. They document the discovery and the origins and pursuance of the first year of study of kuru in great detail and should serve to dispel any misconceptions about who did what and answer many hows, whens, and whys about the early field work and laboratory investigations on kuru. Sufficient time has elapsed since Dr. Vincent Zigas and I published our first account of kuru to transcribe this correspondence without any deletions. Only minor errors of spelling, grammar and punctuation have been corrected. Errors in observation, interpretation, and judgement stand as they were committed in writing. I trust that the edification they may achieve will pardon any lack of discretion in presenting them. D. Carleton Gajdusek, M.D. -1- r L ACKNOl'JLEDGEMENT Above all else, the publication of these letters is a tribute to the late Dr. Joseph E. Smadel who had so much to do with the first year of our kuru investigation and who provided me with the base laboratory at the National Institutes of Health in which we later were able to demonstrate the slow virus etiology of kuru, the first proved slow virus infection of man. These letters are mostly a correspondence between him and me. They reflect, however, the various other persons who contributed extensively or peripherally to the early study of kuru. Dr. Vincent Zigas, with whom I carried out all the first year of study of kuru in the field, writes or is written to but seldom in these letters except when he is co-author with me. We worked closely together for the whole year from the first moment that he told me about kuru. He left to me most of the liaison with colleagues who could support and assist us. It was he, running in and out of Okapa to his hospital and the airstrip at Kainantu, who provided the lifeline of support on which all our studies were based. Dr. Frank MacFarlane Burnet, Dr. Cyril Curtain, Dr. Gray Anderson, Dr. John Eccles, Dr. Robert Walsh, Dr. Margaret Holmes, Miss Lois Larkin and the late Dr. Roy T. Simmons in Australia had much to do in providing our first laboratory studies. Dr. John Gunther, Dr. Roy Scragg, Dr. A.V.G. Price and Dr. Terry Abbott of Port Moresby were all instrumental in helping us in the pursuit of our investigations. Miss Elizabeth Jackson, Dr. Smadel 's collaborator, kept all these records and laboratory specimens sorted and filed at the NIH and supplies moving to us in the field. -3- ANU Australian National University AMSGS Army Medical Service Graduate School NEJM New England Journal of Medicine NFIP National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis NIH National Institutes of Health TPNG Territory of Papua and New Guinea US DA United States Department of Agriculture WNG West New Guinea WRAIR Walter Reed Army Institute of Research Letters between Dr. Smadel and Dr. Gajdusek are arranged chrono- logically and numbered. Associated materials such as letters from either author to other individuals, manuscripts, and reports are given the number of the letter to which they apply most directly with an additional alphabetic code, e.g., 2a and 14a. "Enclosures" refers to materials that definitely accompanied letters between the two authors, and "^pendices" include material that, although it has a direct bearing on the subject of the correspondence, was pro- bably not enclosed with any of these letters. -4- k. : : .
