  • Violence Against Women in Ethnic Riots an Interpretive Exercise Based on Anti-Muslim Riots in Gujarat, 2002 and Uttar-Pradesh, 2013 in India
Violence Against Women in Ethnic Riots An Interpretive Exercise Based on Anti-Muslim Riots in Gujarat, 2002 and Uttar-Pradesh, 2013 in India By Misha Maitreyi Submitted to the Central European University Department of Political Science In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Professor Lea Sgier Budapest, Hungary June 2017 CEU eTD Collection Abstract This thesis attempts to conduct a study of communal riots of Gujarat (2002) and Uttar Pradesh (2013) through an interpretive lens. The research focuses on violence against women in these Hindu-Muslim riots in India and presents the cases of communal violence in the broader context of Indian politics. With the study of the existing literature, it presents a detailed description of the riots, followed by a discussion on the elements of complicit political forces and commonality of gender violence. It looks at gender violence through the lens of physical and symbolic violence perpetrated against women. Moreover, it attempts to develop an understanding of the riots through the perspective of hidden political motivations beneath it. Finally, the thesis places these riots within the larger Indian political context by discussing the political history of the country, arguing that competitive electoral democracy was not present since the formation of independent India in 1947. Rather, it evolved in the 1970s-1980s with the weakening of the oldest political party, Congress Party and the rise of Mandal-Mandir agitations. The thesis also locates the rise of Hindutva politics of BJP in that period and how it has strengthened till now in context of communal riots in the country.

Mapping out fertility in South India: methodology and resultsi Sébastien Oliveau – UMR Géographie-cités [email protected] Recent progress made in Computer Aided Cartography (CAC) and in the Geographic Information System (GIS), supported by the power of computers, today warrants a consideration of the situation in space of statistical units and of their environment. Geographic databasesii containing several tens of thousands of units with which more than one hundred variables are linked can now be created. It therefore becomes possible – and necessary – to envision social change in India in its spatial dimension, and a study of fertility in South India will provide us with an eloquent example. In effect, the analytical cartographyiii of data concerning 70 000 villages comprising the five states and the union territory in the South calls for a new perception of fertility, freed of the a priori divisions constituting the administrative grid of taluks and districts.

  • The State, Democracy and Social Movements
The Dynamics of Conflict and Peace in Contemporary South Asia This book engages with the concept, true value, and function of democracy in South Asia against the background of real social conditions for the promotion of peaceful development in the region. In the book, the issue of peaceful social development is defined as the con- ditions under which the maintenance of social order and social development is achieved – not by violent compulsion but through the negotiation of intentions or interests among members of society. The book assesses the issue of peaceful social development and demonstrates that the maintenance of such conditions for long periods is a necessary requirement for the political, economic, and cultural development of a society and state. Chapters argue that, through the post-colo- nial historical trajectory of South Asia, it has become commonly understood that democracy is the better, if not the best, political system and value for that purpose. Additionally, the book claims that, while democratization and the deepening of democracy have been broadly discussed in the region, the peace that democracy is supposed to promote has been in serious danger, especially in the 21st century. A timely survey and re-evaluation of democracy and peaceful development in South Asia, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of South Asian Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies and Asian Politics and Security. Minoru Mio is a professor and the director of the Department of Globalization and Humanities at the National Museum of Ethnology, Japan. He is one of the series editors of the Routledge New Horizons in South Asian Studies and has co-edited Cities in South Asia (with Crispin Bates, 2015), Human and International Security in India (with Crispin Bates and Akio Tanabe, 2015) and Rethinking Social Exclusion in India (with Abhijit Dasgupta, 2017), also pub- lished by Routledge.
