In this essay, I will argue that, in this place of memory, where pre-Reformation worship meets contemporary devotion and tourism, we find insights for the contemporary church. The Protestant Reformation contributed to the desacralization of the world. Later events such as the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, and the Scientific Revolution of the past two centuries have shifted Western attitudes about the natural world even further away from the sacred. However, every year, thousands of visitors come to Walsingham. What draws them? What are they seeking? To consider what a shrine such as Walsingham might mean to a pilgrim, I will examine Philip earl of Arundel’s poetic lament at the destruction of the shrine, William Shakespeare’s nostalgia for the sacred feminine in The Winter’s Tale, and Robert Lowell’s 1947 poetic treatment of Walsingham. I will argue that focusing on sacred spaces, particularly those associated with the sacred feminine can benefit contemporary Catholics and Protestants.     Plans Announced for National Pilgrimage 2017 Fr Raniero Cantalamessa OFM.Cap, Preacher to the Papal Household, will be the guest preacher at the 2017 National Pilgrimage on Monday, 29th May. The National weekend will feature 40 hours of prayer (starting on Saturday, 27th) including an ecumenical vigil in S. Mary's Parish Church, Little Walsingham on the Sunday evening. The event is the Shrine's response to Thy Kingdom Come, a global prayer movement which the Archbishop of Canterbury is inviting people around the world to join. The wave of prayer will start in May and run for 10 days between Ascension and Pentecost. (www.thykingdom.co.uk) The Anglican Bishop of Norwich (The Rt Revd Graham James) and the Roman Catholic Bishop of East Anglia (The Rt Revd Alan Hopes) will join prayers for the unity of the Church. The heart of our day is with the words of Mary, “do whatever he tells you”, a summary of the gospel that moves us from the watery drudgery of law to the joy and celebration of the Spirit. A pilgrimage is a joyful thing, where the journey itself is as important as the destination. Pilgrimage is full of surprises. Two years ago, I went on what is pompously and grandly called ‘An Official Visit’ to the Holy Land and found I was on a Pilgrimage. The pilgrimage reality was shown in the surprises: From the Orthodox priest in Gaza who each day would have to prepare himself for that day being his last; to the English Jewish woman who had come at the time of the formation of the State of Israel and from a hill full of stones been one of those who created a Kibbutz. Despite the suffering and the battles and the loss of family in Auschwitz , she still trusted in God; To others who unexpectedly spoke of Jesus Christ. With others, with God, with God through others, who were strangers and became fellow pilgrims, the visit became a moment of calling. And that is my prayer for today for you.
