GENESIS FCM, SPRING 2020 BILL CUMBIE ([email protected])

26 Then said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26-28) Intro to Genesis

▪ Genesis – First book of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Jewish Bible) ▪ The Pentateuch was given at Mt. Sinai at the time of Israel's exodus from Egypt (about 1250 to 1400 BC) ▪ The word ‘Genesis’ means beginnings and the book chronicles the beginning of space/time, the formation and furnishing of the world, the creation of animals, and the creation of mankind. ▪ It also contains many other ‘beginnings – the first disobedience of mankind, the first children, the first destruction of the world (by flood), the first institution of government, the first choosing of the nation of Israel. ▪ One of many stories about the creation of the world – Wikipedia has a list of about 100 stories – but the Genesis account has many factors that make it unique including… Intro to Genesis: How is it different from other creation stories?

▪ Two viewpoints on Creation that more fully explain what happened ▪ A straightforward account of Creation that is logical, meaningful, and coherent ▪ A discussion of all aspects of creation including the cosmos, the earth, animals, and mankind ▪ An account specifically crafted to make everyone understand that God created EVERYTHING! ▪ The description of actual historical events presented in a straightforward manner that is much, much closer to a modern scientific description of what happened than any other account ▪ There is only one God – this is the only account that does not discuss other Genesis 1: 1-5 and John 1:1-5 – two perspectives on Creation

The Creation of the World 1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. John 1:1-5 – Another Perspective on Creation 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Genesis 1 – The first six days of Creation

1. Light/dark 2. Sky/sea 3. Land

4. Sun, stars, moon 2. Sea and air animals 6. Land animals & man Genesis 1: Day 6 of Creation continued – creation of Man

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Genesis 1: Day 6 of Creation continued – creation of Man

26 Then God said, ▪ “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. ▪ And let them have dominion over ▪ the fish of the sea and ▪ over the birds of the heavens and ▪ over the livestock and ▪ over all the earth and ▪ over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1: 26a, 26b and 27 – the crown of creation

26 Then God said, ▪“Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Genesis 1: Day 6 of Creation continued – creation of Man

28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, ▪ “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, ▪ and have dominion over the fish of the sea ▪ and over the birds of the heavens ▪ and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, ▪ “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. What is the ‘image of God’

▪ Moral agency? Are we responsible for our actions, do we make free choices, are we rational and can we reason in a special way, are we intentional? ▪ More than just physical? Is there are part of us that is spiritual, that no other part of creation has, is our being more than solely inside creation (physical space/time matrix/framework)? ▪ Physical appearance? Do we somehow ‘mirror’ God physically? ▪ Dominion? Is our rulership part of the image of God, what about our ability to judge and discriminate, our ability to plan? ▪ Community? Are we created in such a way that we are complete by ourselves but also only complete with others? ▪ Communication? Is our ability to use words (and make language) similar to God? ▪ Creativity? Are we uniquely creative, thinking and bringing into creation new things? ▪ Loving? Are we able to love and experience emotion (feelings) that is of a quality and magnitude different from the rest of creation? ▪ Giving? Do we in some way have a special ability to give (to others, to God, to creation)? Genesis 1: 26-31 – the Crown of Creation – Mankind

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. ▪ And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, ▪ “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” ▪ 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. ▪ 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Genesis 2:1-3 Day 7 of Creation – Rest and Blessing

2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.

3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.
