Male Horse: Ghostzapper He was flat out the fastest horse that raced during the decade. Smarty Jones may have gotten the most headlines in 2004, but it was Ghostzapper who was named Horse of the Year. He only raced 11 times, but he won nine races, includ- ing the Met Mile, the Breeders= Cup Classic, the Woodward and the Vosburgh. Some male horses, Curlin and Tiznow among them, may have ac- complished more, but when Ghostzapper was right there wasn=t another male horse who raced from 2000 through Horsephotos 2009 that could have beaten him. Laurel Provides Update on Slots Approval Process: Laurel Park officials held a news conference yester- day morning to provide a status report on its attempts to obtain permits for facilities, infrastructure, road net- work and utility capacities in the event that the pro- posed Video Lottery Terminal facility venue for Arundel Mills fails to receive zoning approval. Track Accredited: FAIR GROUNDS • “Fair Grounds was reviewed on Dec. 3 and 4 during its current meeting,” said Mike Ziegler, executive director of NTRA Safety and Integrity Alliance. “It exceeded prescribed benchmarks on many fronts and should be acknowledged for industry-wide best practices in the areas of post- mortem veterinary examinations, veterinarian’s list protocols and planning and procedures in case of catastrophic injury.” • “It should be noted that Fair Grounds is the fourth Churchill Downs, Inc. track to be accredited this year,” added Alex Waldrop, president and CEO of the NTRA. “CDI is to be commended for treating the accreditation process as the initiative that it is.” www.ntraalliance.com
