THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF CHESTNUT HILL PHILADLEPHIA

Dreamers, They never learn, They never learn, Beyond, beyond the point, Of no return, Of no return

And it’s too late, The damage is done, The damage is done

This goes, Beyond me, Beyond you

The white room, By a window, Where the sun comes, Through

We are, Just happy to serve, Just happy to serve, You

OPENING VOLUNTARY Daydreaming Radiohead, 1993

INVOCATION

CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: I am the good shepherd, says the Lord: I know my own and my own know me. People: O come let us bow down and worship; let us kneel before the Lord our maker. For the Lord is our God; we are the Lord’s people, the flock that God shepherds. Leader: Let us worship God!

PRAYER OF ADORATION (unison)

Glory to you, O God: You have won victory over death, raising Jesus Christ from the grave and giving us eternal life. Glory to you, O Christ: For us and for our salvation you overcame death and opened the way to everlasting life. Glory to you, O Holy Spirit: You lead us into the truth. Glory to you, O blessed Trinity, now and forever. Amen.

HYMN My Shepherd Will Supply My Need RESIGNATION

WELCOME

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (unison)

Living God, with joy we celebrate the presence of the risen Christ. Enliven our hearts by your word, so that we may proclaim the good news of eternal and abundant life. Through Christ the risen Lord we pray. Amen.

EPISTLE LESSON Acts 2:42-47

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous heart, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

Leader: Holy wisdom, holy Word. People: Thanks be to God.

CHILDREN’S MOMENT

EPISTLE LESSON 1 Peter 2:19-25

For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God’s approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

Leader: Holy wisdom, holy Word. People: Thanks be to God.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (unison) The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE and LORD’S PRAYER (unison)

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

PCCH ANNOUNCEMENTS

YOUTH SUNDAY Thanks to our PCCH youth for their worship leadership this morning. Thanks to the families who nurture and support them, and to Brian Russo for his pastoral leadership with this group. We are grateful.

ONLINE GIVING AT PCCH HAS CHANGED Good news! Based on increased interest, PCCH has partnered with the Presbyterian Foundation to securely process your electronic giving, whether through your computer or smartphone. These options can save you -- and the church office -- time!

If you wish to make a tax-deductible gift, please use this Give Now button (also on our website) to set up new one-time, or recurring gifts. This button will take you to a donation page where you will be asked to create a Profile (a one-time process) using your email address, home address and a password. Whether you have pledged a certain amount for 2020 or are giving to PCCH to support the work of the church you would pick the option to give to “Pledge/General Giving.” If you want the funds to go somewhere specific you may choose the “Special Opportunity” option and add a note at the end of the submission as to where you would like those funds directed.

You will then be asked about donation frequency, date of the gift and donation account information (checking, savings or credit/debit card). Finally, there are two boxes – the first you may check if you’d like to give an additional 2% to help offset the processing fee and the second to use your profile address. You will receive an email confirmation of your gift but you are given the option to print as well.

More good news! The Presbyterian Foundation also offers the GivePlus Church app which is available through the App Store and Google Play. Search for “GivePlus Church” to download the app. You can either allow access to location services if you’d like to use the app’s Find Churches Near Me feature or search for PCCH listed as Chestnut Hill Presbyterian Church. GivePlus Church is free to download and there are no fees to make a donation. You can watch this short video to learn how easy it is to donate with GivePlus Church – video.

COFFEE HOUR CONVERSATIONS Our first “Coffee Hour Conversations” were held this week, an opportunity to gather via Zoom to check-in and share our experiences. These were very enjoyable experiences. We hope you will join the next round. If you need assistance with Zoom, please let us know -- it's simple! Email [email protected] to let us know that you’d like to participate in future gatherings.

NEWCOMER CONVERSATION We will hold a “newcomer” Zoom conversation for those who have visited us in the last several months on Wednesday, May 5 at 7:00 p.m. We have sent email invitations; if you didn’t receive one and would like to join, please email [email protected].

CANTATAS AND CHAMBER MUSIC On Friday May 1, we premiered our first Cantatas and Chamber Music online concert. These 20-30 minute concerts will consist of live performances by our church’s musicians (from their “chambers”) as well as recordings of our past concerts. The series kicked of this week with excerpts from PCCH’s Cantatas and Chamber Music and Festival of Music and Arts concerts featuring music of Samuel Barber and Dieterich Buxtehude. Once premiered, the performances remain available to enjoy. Please go to the Music and Arts tab on the church’s website to stream the performances.

A RABBI, PRIEST and MINISTER DISCUSS THE CRISIS On April 22, Rabbi Adam Zeff of the Germantown Jewish Centre, Jarrett Kerbel of St. Martins-in-the-Fields and John Wilkinson held a Zoom conversation to discuss the COVID 19 crisis. It was an engaging event that is now posted and available to view. Visit https://www.chestnuthillpres.org/education/a-rabbi-a-pastor-and-a-priest-discuss-the-crisis/

GARDENING OPPORTUNITY If you have a green thumb and are looking for a safe, socially-distant way to get out of the house and give back to our community, please consider adopting one of PCCH’s front lawn raised bed gardens! Thanks to the generosity of Bill Toffey, the gardens have been repaired and are ready for tending. Any individual or family interested in adopting a garden bed should contact Austin at [email protected] for instructions and a reserved time on our staggered work schedule (so that no two families or individuals will be working at the same time). We can provide everything you need—even seeds—or you can bring seeds from home. All of the produce from our gardens will go to Face to Face or Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry. Special thanks go to Bill Toffey, Greg and Maddie Dickinson, Deborah Evans, and the Huertgens who have already adopted garden beds. Four garden beds remain, and they’ll be assigned first come, first served!

SPEAKER SERIES ON THE HILL (ONLINE) Thursday, May 14 - starting at 12:30 p.m. online https://www.chestnuthillpres.org/education/speaker-series-hill/ (Video will be available to access any time after that) Speaker: Elizabeth Sawyer Unearthing the Past: Archaeological Research at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello Thomas Jefferson, his family, white workmen, and enslaved workers comprised a diverse community at Monticello, Jefferson’s plantation in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Monticello Archaeology Department conducts research exploring the plantation landscape to better understand the dynamics of this community and how it changed over time. Mrs. Sawyer will discuss how archaeologists conduct excavations and analysis; recent findings from projects near the Monticello mansion and the homes of enslaved field workers; and what we can learn about the lives of people in the past through archaeological investigations.

Elizabeth Sawyer is a graduate of The College of William and Mary with 15+ years of experience working at archaeology sites in Virginia and Massachusetts. She currently works as an archaeological analyst at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and is active with the Council of Virginia Archaeologists, serving as the secretary and the co-chair of their Public Education Committee.

YOUTH GROUP The High School and Junior High Youth Groups are meeting regularly on Zoom. We’ve been sharing music, stories, videos, and jokes; supporting each other in this different world we all now occupy.

The Confirmation Class has been meeting regularly as if nothing changed, with the same schedule and curriculum. Our last class (on Zoom) will be this Sunday April, 26. The kids will then be writing their Statements of Faith, in preparation to be read before Session at the May meeting.

Brian has been recording and uploading weekly Zoom interviews for a series called “The Good Millennial Zoomcast.” Members in our congregation (mostly young, but not exclusively) share their thoughts and unique talents with the world over the interwebs in a podcast-like setting. Recordings can be found on Brian’s Facebook or YouTube page. Contact him for further details.

UPDATE FROM THE SOCIAL WITNESS COMMITTEE (For the full message, visit our website and Facebook page.) Thank you to church members for your continuing financial support—it has enabled us to increase and accelerate our annual gifts to local organizations who are providing direct relief to our neighbors, and whose fundraising capacity has been hampered during the pandemic.

Our partners need financial resources. Next week, we will begin to highlight our partners and their work, with contact information on financial support. In the coming weeks, you will learn about: PIHN, Broad Street Ministry, Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry, Whosoever Gospel Mission, Bethesda/Our Brother’s Place, Dawn’s Place and DePaul Philadelphia’s Medical Respite and West Kensington Ministry.

Thank you in advance for your prayerful generosity, as we seek to support those who are on the front lines of relief and sharing God’s compassion and love.
