Election of the Candidates Calling of the Candidates Presentation of the Candidates The director of the diaconate presents the candidates to the archbishop and attests to their worthiness. Election and Consent The archbishop elects them for ordination to the order of deacon and invites the assembly to give its affirmation. Response: Thanks be to God. The archbishop addresses the assembly on the office and responsibilities of the deacon. Promise of the Elect The candidates publicly declare their intention to fulfill the office of deacon with prayer and dedication, following the example of Christ. They promise respect and obedience to the archbishop and his successors. 5 Litany of Supplication The archbishop invites all present to join in prayer through the intercession of the saints.

Used with permission. 6 Laying on of Hands and Prayer of Ordination Through the laying on of hands by the archbishop and the Prayer of Ordination, the gift of the Holy Spirit for the office of deacon is conferred on the candidates. The Church dedicates these to the ministry of worship and service.

Investiture of Ordinands in Dalmatic and The newly ordained are vested with the dalmatic and stole as a sign of the deacon’s office.

Handing On of the Book of Gospels The deacon’s duty is to proclaim the Gospel and preach its meaning by word and by the example of his life. The Book of Gospels is presented to the newly ordained deacons.

Kiss of Peace At the conclusion of the ordination rite, the archbishop extends the fraternal greeting that acknowledges the deacon as a co-worker in the ministry of the Church. Representatives of the diaconate then share this sign with the new deacons.
