6th Sunday of Lent April 14, 2019 Five Paths of Repentance Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

From the Gusset Five Paths of Repentance for Lent Ancient cultures thought that oil was an instrument for strengthening, beautifying, and healing. For instance, was instructed to anoint Aaron with oil to give Aaron the strength to act as High Priest. Jesus instructed those who fast: not to appear to be fasting by anointing their head with oil. Oil showed forth a beauty in one’s skin M so a man anointed with oil looked handsome, and a woman anointed with oil appeared more beautiful, and no would know that they were fasting. And finally, in the Lord’s parable about the Good Samaritan, remember the Samaritan poured oil over the wounds of the robber’s victim and healed him. When a small contingent of parishioners makes a pilgrimage to the Cathedral in Rockford on Holy Thursday to pick up the 3 oils that we will use at our Churches M we will use the Oil of salvation, the Chrism Oil, and the Oil of the sick to strengthen, beautify, and heal the parishioners of Maytown, Sublette, and West Brooklyn in the coming year. Just so, St. says that the 5 paths of Repentance are healing balms that we may pour over any wound in our soul to help our souls regain their health M a health, which our souls enjoyed following our rising from the Baptismal font. “Once we have regained our spiritual health (the forgiveness of our sins) we can approach with great confidence the holy altar M go out to meet Christ, the King of glory, and attain the eternal blessings through the grace and mercy and kindness of Jesus Christ, our Lord.” When we walk the 5 paths of Repentance, when we pray fervently, and give alms generouslyM we have great strength to do the things Jesus Christ did. When we do the good even though no one may ever find out that we did the good M our souls have tremendous beauty in God’s eyes. When we condemn ourselves of our own sins, and when we forgive others their sins against us M we are healed, made whole, have integrity. We know the truth: that the Son of God became man, dwelt among us, died for us, and was raised from the dead, all so that we might have eternal life! Yours on the Path Fr. Randy A SNAP SHOT OF THE TRIDUUM Holy Thursday Mystics call it: the Secret of Holy Thursday. That Jesus held this Secret in His Sacred Heart all the days of His earthly life M the Secret that the Lord would become Food for us to eat, the Secret that the Lord would become Wine for us to drink. The Secret of Holy Thursday is the Eucharist. Even when Jesus performed His very first miracle, you can see how God was trying to show us, mere men, the Mystery of Faith. Jesus had the Secret in His Heart at Cana when He changed the water into wine. He performed this miracle for all to see, but they did not see it. Do you see the Secret of Holy Thursday at the Mass or are you as blind as the wedding guests at Cana? Good Friday There is a tradition, that Seth ( and Eve’s 3rd son) went back to the entrance of Paradise and encountered the Angel with the fiery sword that guarded the entrance back into heaven; and Seth asked the angel for a twig from the tree of Life. Seth then planted this twig in Jerusalem, and since plants have totipotency M the twig grew into a large tree. When we venerate the Cross on Good Friday, we venerate the instrument that the Christ used to save us. Easter Vigil It is by the precious Wounds of Christ that we are healed and perfected and made ready to spend eternity in Heaven. Jesus Christ is the one who earns the victory for heaven by His death and resurrection, and you and I are the ones whom He saves. By our Lord’s continuously showing His Holy Wounds to the Father, God the Father is distracted and we, the brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ, who have eaten of the Body and Blood of our Savior, sneak into Heaven. Heroes of God; The Feast Days of the St. Bernadette Soubirous April 16th “One must have Faith and pray; the water will have no virtue without Faith.” This was Bernadette’s response to the Commission that examined the water from the stream that the poor, uneducated girl from Lourdes had uncovered with her hands. The scientists were looking for an explanation as to why the water seemed to have miraculous healing power. Finding only a high mineral content, the medical review board determined “that nothing out of the ordinary would account for the cures attributed to the water.” In the 161 years since the apparitions of our Lady to the oldest child in the Soubirous family, over 70 cures have been verified as “inexplicable.” On February 11th in the year 1858, Soubirous was 14 years old, and a routine trip to gather firewood with her sister and a friend changed the world. In the grotto of Massabielle, Bernadette saw the vision of a “a lovely lady wearing a white veil, a blue girdle, and with a yellow rose on each foot.” She would see and talk with the Lady a total of 18 times. After entering the convent of the Sisters of Charity of , France, Bernadette spent the rest of her years working as an assistant in the infirmary, and as a sacristan in the chapel where she made beautiful embroidered altar cloths and . Once asked by her sisters about the visions, Bernadette told them, “the used me as a broom to remove the dust. When the work is done, the broom is put behind the door again.” St. Bernadette Soubirous is known as the patron of ‘those who are ridiculed for their Faith.’ Her own family, her parish priest, and many of the townsfolk of Lourdes thought she was either lying or believed she suffered from mental illness and ought to be put in an asylum. Bernadette died on April 16th in the year 1879 at the age of 35 after suffering much from tuberculosis of the lungs and bones. St. Bernadette’s incorrupt body lies in Nevers, and Fr. Randy is blessed to have a of this great Saint. Since we will be having Eucharistic adoration following the Mass on April 16th, we will not be blessed with the relic, but all will be allowed to venerate this 1st class relic following adoration.
