  • Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Two Sisters by Gore Vidal Two Sisters (Novel) Two Sisters Is a Novelistic Memoir by the American Writer Gore Vidal
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Two Sisters by Gore Vidal Two Sisters (novel) Two Sisters is a novelistic memoir by the American writer Gore Vidal. Originally published in 1970 this fairly short novel (174 pages) contains, according to the blurb on the dust jacket of the first edition, "Gore Vidal’s singular speculations on love, sex, death, literature and politics." A memoir is a collection of memories that an individual writes about moments or events, both public or private, that took place in the subject's life. The assertions made in the work are understood to be factual. While memoir has historically been defined as a subcategory of biography or autobiography since the late 20th century, the genre is differentiated in form, presenting a narrowed focus. A biography or autobiography tells the story "of a life", while a memoir often tells a story "from a life", such as touchstone events and turning points from the author's life. The author of a memoir may be referred to as a memoirist or a memorialist . Eugene Luther Gore Vidal was an American writer and public intellectual known for his patrician manner, epigrammatic wit, and polished style of writing. Reviewing the book in the New York Times , reviewer John Leonard complained, ""Two Sisters" works neither as a novel (all the news happens off-stage) nor as a memoir (the "I" is far too coy)." [1] John Leonard was an American literary, television, film, and cultural critic. Related Research Articles. Burr (1973), by Gore Vidal, is a historical novel that challenges the traditional founding-fathers iconography of United States history, by means of a narrative that includes a fictional memoir, by Aaron Burr, in representing the people, politics, and events of the U.S.

  • The Representation of Suicide in the Cinema
The Representation of Suicide in the Cinema John Saddington Submitted for the degree of PhD University of York Department of Sociology September 2010 Abstract This study examines representations of suicide in film. Based upon original research cataloguing 350 films it considers the ways in which suicide is portrayed and considers this in relation to gender conventions and cinematic traditions. The thesis is split into two sections, one which considers wider themes relating to suicide and film and a second which considers a number of exemplary films. Part I discusses the wider literature associated with scholarly approaches to the study of both suicide and gender. This is followed by quantitative analysis of the representation of suicide in films, allowing important trends to be identified, especially in relation to gender, changes over time and the method of suicide. In Part II, themes identified within the literature review and the data are explored further in relation to detailed exemplary film analyses. Six films have been chosen: Le Feu Fol/et (1963), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), The Killers (1946 and 1964), The Hustler (1961) and The Virgin Suicides (1999). These films are considered in three chapters which exemplify different ways that suicide is constructed. Chapters 4 and 5 explore the two categories that I have developed to differentiate the reasons why film characters commit suicide. These are Melancholic Suicide, which focuses on a fundamentally "internal" and often iII understood motivation, for example depression or long term illness; and Occasioned Suicide, where there is an "external" motivation for which the narrative provides apparently intelligible explanations, for instance where a character is seen to be in danger or to be suffering from feelings of guilt.

  • Abstract Jane Austen Uncensored
ABSTRACT JANE AUSTEN UNCENSORED: A CRITICAL AND PEDAGOGICAL STUDY OF AUSTEN’S LETTERS FOR THE COLLEGE CLASSROOM Amanda Smothers, Ph.D. Department of English Northern Illinois University, 2016 William Baker and Lara Crowley, Co-Directors A vast amount of literary critical and scholarly work on Jane Austen’s writing, including her juvenilia, has been published. However, insufficient attention has been paid to her extant letters and their significance. This dissertation redresses the imbalance and is the first extensive critical, scholarly discussion of Jane Austen’s correspondence and their pedagogical applications. In order to rectify the disparity, this dissertation examines Jane Austen’s surviving letters to determine how to contextualize them historically and biographically and in relation to her fiction for college composition and undergraduate literature courses. Background information on letter writing in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century provides context for Austen’s letter writing, comparing her content and style to common practices. This study also investigates the world of Austen’s letters, focusing on historical and biographical context, and scrutinizing the letters as a source of information about middle-class Regency England; Austen’s family and social circles; and the author herself, including her personality, attitudes toward current events, views on works of literature, and references to her writing and publication processes. Moreover, Austen’s letters would be beneficial as a theoretical pedagogical tool for teaching not only the novels but the world of her novels through an examination of her letters. Throughout my dissertation, previous work on teaching Austen and teaching with letters (both as a teaching tool and as a writing method) is incorporated, analyzed, and adapted.
