Uefa Europa League - 2014/15 Season Match Press Kits UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - 2014/15 SEASON MATCH PRESS KITS Stadion Letzigrund - Zurich Thursday 2 October 2014 21.05CET (21.05 local time) FC Zürich VfL Borussia Group A - Matchday 2 Mönchengladbach Last updated 03/06/2015 05:10CET Match background 2 Legend 3 1 FC Zürich - VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach Thursday 2 October 2014 - 21.05CET (21.05 local time) Match press kit Stadion Letzigrund, Zurich Match background FC Zürich will welcome an old friend in VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach coach Lucien Favre as the sides meet in UEFA Europa League Group A. Form guide • Zürich have lost their last three home games against German clubs since a 3-1 victory against Berliner FC Dynamo – then playing in the former East Germany – in September 1981. Their only other UEFA win against German opponents was against another East German side, 1. FC Dynamo Dresden, in March 1977. • Zurich's heaviest home defeat in Europe was a 5-0 reverse against another German outfit, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup group stage. • Zürich have won just one of their last six European home fixtures. • Mönchengladbach were unbeaten away from home (W1 D2) in their only previous UEFA Europa League group stage campaign, in 2012/13. Trivia and links • Mönchengladbach's Brazilian forward Raffael played at Zürich from 2005 to 2007, winning two league titles under the leadership of his current coach, Lucien Favre. • Zürich forward Amine Chermiti played alongside Mönchengladbach's Raffael and Ibrahima Traoré – and under Favre – during his time at Hertha BSC Berlin (2008-10). Team-mate Mario Gavranović has also played in Germany (FC Schalke 04, 1. FSV Mainz 05). • Mönchengladbach's Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer played for Zürich's local rivals Grasshopper Club while on loan from FC Basel 1893 in 2009/10. Sommer's fellow Swiss international – and Basel old boy – Granit Xhaka also plays for Gladbach. Sommer and Xhaka were team-mates of Zürich's Gilles Yapi at Basel from 2010 to 2012. The coaches • Not to be confused with the famous Swiss referee with whom he shares a name, Zürich coach Urs Meier was a defender for the likes of FC Schaffhausen, AC Bellinzona and Grasshopper Club before moving into coaching. Briefly in charge of the Liechtenstein national team, he took control of his hometown club in 2012, having thrived at the helm of their youth side. • Swiss coach Lucien Favre is leading Mönchengladbach into a second UEFA Europa League group stage campaign, having steered them to the round of 32 in 2012/13. The former Switzerland midfielder won two national titles and a Swiss Cup in charge of FC Zürich, and coached Hertha BSC Berlin before taking over Mönchengladbach in 2011. • Favre led Zürich to their first title in 25 years in 2005/06 and repeated the feat the following season. He was voted Switzerland's coach of the season for both campaigns. 2 FC Zürich - VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach Thursday 2 October 2014 - 21.05CET (21.05 local time) Match press kit Stadion Letzigrund, Zurich Legend Competitions Club competitions National team competitions UCL: UEFA Champions League EURO: UEFA European Football Championship ECCC: European Champion Clubs' Cup WC: FIFA World Cup UEL: UEFA Europa League CONFCUP: FIFA Confederations Cup UCUP: UEFA Cup FRIE: Friendly internationals UCWC: UEFA Cup Winners' Cup U21FRIE: Under-21 friendly internationals SCUP: UEFA Super Cup U21: UEFA European Under-21 Championship UIC: UEFA Intertoto Cup U17: UEFA Under-17 Championship ICF: Inter-Cities Fairs Cup U16: UEFA European Under-16 Championship U19: UEFA Under-19 Championship U18: UEFA European Under-18 Championship WWC: FIFA Women's World Cup WEURO: UEFA European Women's Championship Competition stages Other abbreviations F: Final GS: Group stage (aet): After extra time pens: Penalties GS1: First group stage GS2: Second group stage No.: Number og: Own goal 3QR: Third qualifying round R1: First round ag: Match decided on away P: Penalty R2: Second round R3: Third round goals agg: Aggregate R4: Fourth round PR: Preliminary round Pld: Matches played AP: Appearances SF: Semi-finals QF: Quarter-finals Pos.: Position Comp.: Competition R16: round of 16 QR: Qualifying round Pts: Points D: Drawn R32: Round of 32 1QR: First qualifying round R: Sent off (straight red card) DoB: Date of birth 1st: first leg 2QR: Second qualifying Res.: Result ET: Extra Time round sg: Match decided by silver GA: Goals against 2nd: second leg FT: Final tournament goal t: Match decided by toss of a PO: Play-off ELITE: Elite round coin Rep: Replay 3rdPO: Third-place play-off GF: Goals for W: Won PO - FT: Play-off for Final GS-FT: Group stage – final gg: Match decided by golden Y: Booked Tournament tournament goal L: Lost Y/R: Sent off (two yellow Nat.: Nationality cards) N/A: Not applicable f: Match forfeited Statistics -: Denotes player substituted +: Denotes player introduced *: Denotes player sent off +/-: Denotes player introduced and substituted Squad list D: Disciplinary *: Misses next match if booked S: Suspended QUAL: All UEFA qualifiers UEL: Current season total UEFA Europa League appearances from the group stage onwards prior to the current matchday UEL: Total appearances in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final only UEFA: All-time total appearances in UEFA club competition including qualifying Disclaimer: Although UEFA has taken all reasonable care that the information contained within this document is accurate at the time of publication, no representation or guarantee (including liability towards third parties), expressed or implied, is made as to its accuracy, reliability or completeness.
