Having lost his father at the age of three, the boy was raised by his stepfather Hasanali bay Sadigov, an educated man who introduced him to the Russian lan- guage and taught him how to read and write. In 1880, the family moved to Shusha, the main city of Karabakh, where Abdurrahim entered the city’s six-grade school and a year later moved to a fully-fledged school.
