Australian Bishop Urges Prudence As Anglicans Join Catholic Church Australian bishop urges prudence as Anglicans join Catholic Church PERTH, Australia – Incorporating traditionalist Anglicans into the Catholic Church must be a “slow, cautious and prudent” path of implementing Pope Benedict XVI’s apostolic constitution, said the bishop in charge of the process in Australia. On November 9, the Vatican published Pope Benedict’s apostolic constitution “Anglicanorum Coetibus” (“Groups of Anglicans”) along with specific norms governing the establishment and governance of “personal ordinariates,” structures similar to dioceses, for former Anglicans who become Catholic. Melbourne Auxiliary Bishop Peter J. Elliott, a former Anglican himself, told The Record Catholic newspaper of the Archdiocese of Perth Dec. 11 that such Anglicans are in for a difficult next few years as the ordinariate is established in Australia. The prelate, appointed to oversee the process at the bishops’ November 23-27 plenary meeting, said that while the Church of England made some pastoral provision for these traditionalist Anglo Catholics, the Anglican Church has done nothing for them in Australia; “and the generous offer of Pope Benedict (XVI) comes to them in that context.” “They are at a stage of praying and discerning,” Bishop Elliott said. “Obviously some are very tied to the churches where they worship, and great sacrifices will be required of them. “They will have to give up worshipping in familiar places that they love dearly and seek fellowship with like-minded Anglicans on the journey into full unity with the Catholic Church.” The apostolic constitution, he explained, gives “very clear guidance” on questions of local ordinaries, or bishops, of the Anglo Catholics. These will be worked out under the guidance of the Vatican and in conjunction with the Australian bishops over the next few years. “I would hasten to add that we must not hurry this process. It must move slowly, cautiously and prudently,” he said. “We will need more guidance from Rome on the exact way to proceed, but practical planning is already beginning at the local level in Australia among these groups.” Bishop Elliott said that while Australia’s bishops welcomed the project, “we’re under no illusions it will be a complex process of establishing the ordinariate in a stable and sustainable way.” “Some are going around saying this is a blow to ecumenism. I would argue quite the opposite; it will eventually facilitate stronger and richer ecumenism and may well facilitate honest relations with all Anglicans,” he said. Bishop Elliott has already met with bishops, clergy and lay from the Traditional Anglican Communion and the traditionalist Forward in Faith Australia and has planned a series of meetings with the two groups and other individuals who have contacted him. “I think we have to be as welcoming as possible, as many of these people are deeply hurt and have suffered much by trying to maintain a Catholic conscience in a situation of rapid change,” he said..

ANiC Newsletter 22 November 2010 Handle with prayer News – ANiC and AEN Welcome Mill Bay church plant! Christ Church of the Valley (Mill Bay, BC) is ANiC’s 40 th official church plant/parish. The new congregation is lead by the Rev Andrew Hewlett – one of our Morning Prayer preachers at Synod. BC Court of Appeal gives mixed decision The BC Court of Appeal issued its decision from the September 13-16 hearing, agreeing with four Vancouver area ANiC parishes on issues of law, but still dismissing their appeal. The parishes, St John’s (Vancouver), St Matthews (Abbotsford), Good Shepherd (Vancouver), and St Matthias & St Luke’s (Vancouver), had appealed a 25 November 2009 decision of Mr Justice Stephen Kelleher awarding beneficial ownership of church properties to the Diocese of New Westminster in the case involving the split in the Anglican Church. The Diocese of New Westminster’s counter appeal of Mr Justice Kelleher’s decision granting a bequest (worth approx. $2M) to the ANiC congregation of the Church of the Good Shepherd was also dismissed. Special Counsel Cheryl Chang says: “In my view, the court did not give due consideration to some critical evidence on issues of doctrine, Anglican hierarchy and authority. Mdm Justice Newbury states (at para 75), “it is antithetical to the nature of Anglicanism to contemplate “Anglican ministry” in a parish that has withdrawn from the authority of its diocese and bishop”. However, this ignores the Windsor Report which stated clearly and unequivocally, in reference to this diocese and bishop, that it was more antithetical to Anglicanism for a bishop and diocese to act “unilaterally… in breach of the legitimate application of the Christian faith as the churches of the Anglican Communion have received it ”.

  • Essentials of Anglican Identity
A WONDERFUL ORDER: ESSENTIALS OF ANGLICAN IDENTITY Vocations Day, Gordon Square, Saturday 30 November 2013 by Colin Podmore I’m delighted to be with you. The fact that God is calling so many from within the catholic tradition to serve him and us as deacons and priests in the Church of England, and that so many are responding to that vocation, is a great sign of hope for the future. Fr Brownsell has asked me to talk from an historical point of view about the Church of England’s identity as ‘part of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church’. He also asked me to comment on how we can function within the Church of England as she is, so I’ll preface my talk with some brief comments about that. One thing that depresses me about some of our clergy and ordinands (and it is not their fault but the fault of those who teach and guide them) is that they have a remarkable degree of familiarity with the liturgy, rubrics, canons and conciliar documents of another church (fine in itself), but combined with a remarkable ignorance of the liturgy, rubrics, canons and other fundamental documents of our own church. What is worse, such people have a tendency to identify what is Roman as ‘catholic’ and what is Anglican as ‘protestant’. If we regard our own church and tradition as protestant, we have no business as catholics to be in it; if we portray the Church of England as such, we can hardly complain if she behaves accordingly. Our vocation is to recall the Church of England to her true identity as part of the one, holy catholic and apostolic Church, and to promote her catholic identity.

  • Anglican Bishop Announces He Will Resign, Join Catholic Ordinariate
Anglican bishop announces he will resign, join Catholic ordinariate LONDON – The bishop who leads the largest Anglo-Catholic group in the Church of England said he plans to resign by the end of the year and join a personal ordinariate when it is established in England and Wales. “I am not retiring, I am resigning,” Bishop John Broadhurst of Fulham told an Oct. 15 meeting of Forward in Faith, the traditionalist group of which he is chairman. He added to applause that he expects to “enter the ordinariate.” Bishop Broadhurst told Catholic News Service in an Oct. 18 telephone interview that he was “absolutely, absolutely” certain that a personal ordinariate would soon come into existence in England but did not know exactly when. Pope Benedict XVI established the mechanisms to create personal ordinariates last November through his apostolic constitution “Anglicanorum Coetibus” (“Groups of Anglicans”) in response to repeated requests for a means of group reception from disaffected Anglican bishops around the world. The structures will resemble military dioceses and allow former Anglican communities to retain their distinctive patrimony and practices, including married priests. “If the pope makes you an offer, you can’t ignore it,” Bishop Broadhurst told CNS. He decided to enter the Catholic faith after the General Synod of the Church of England voted in July to ordain women as bishops by 2014 without provisions to satisfy Anglicans who objected. “The Church of England has been saying to conservative Anglicans like me that ‘we can’t give you jurisdiction and living space because it wouldn’t be catholic,’ but Rome has said ‘we can give you that.’ It is very interesting,” he said.

  • English, Welsh Bishops: Anglican Ordinariate to Be Started in January
English, Welsh bishops: Anglican ordinariate to be started in January LONDON – The first personal ordinariate for former Anglicans will be established in England in early January, the English and Welsh Catholic bishops announced. It will include five former Anglican bishops, who announced their resignations earlier this month, and an unspecified number of clergy and laity divided into about 30 groups, the bishops said a news conference at their headquarters Nov. 19. The ordinariate will be formed by a decree and Pope Benedict XVI will appoint the ordinary at about the same time, they said. The structure, which will resemble a military diocese, will be the first to be created since the pope issued his apostolic constitution “Anglicanorum coetibus” Nov. 4, 2009. The ordinariate will allow groups of Anglicans to enter the Catholic Church while retaining much of their distinctive patrimony – including married priests – as well as their liturgical practices. Auxiliary Bishop Alan Hopes of Westminster, the bishops’ liaison officer for the ordinariate and the highest-ranking former Anglican priest in England and Wales, said small groups of Anglican laity and their pastors had been preparing for reception into the church and the ordinariate since late September. “The bishops have warmly and generously welcomed the Holy Father’s initiative toward those Anglicans who are seeking full and ecclesial communion with the Catholic Church,” he told the news conference. “We have placed it all in the context of our overall ecumenical journey – which is exactly where the Holy Father has placed it – which seeks full communion in faith and fullness of unity for which Jesus Christ himself prayed,” he said.
