It tells a story concerning inter-racial, same-sex love, and the control of imagemaking. A. The past story, 1828-1836 is loosely based on the true story of New Zealand Missionary William Yate and his lover, Eruera Pare Hongi. It is mostly set in Northland, New Zealand, and focuses on the inland Waimate North Mission and surrounding Maori settlement. B. The present day story is a fictional account of Riki Te Awata and an English Photographer, Jeffrey Edison. It is mostly set in the community around a coastal marae and a derelict Southern Mission.1 Sophie Jerram November 2002 1 Unlike the Waimate Mission, this ‘Southern Mission’ is fictional. It was originally intended to be the Puriri mission, at the base of the Coromandel Peninsular, established by William Yate in 1834. Since the coastal mission I have set the film in is nothing like Puriri I have dropped the name. i EXT. PORT JACKSON 1836, DAY A painted image (of the John Gully School) of the historical port of Sydney fills the entire screen. It depicts a number of ships: whaling, convict and trade vessels. In 1826, the same year that Rewa, Te Kemara and their allies defeated Ngare Raumati at Moturahurahu, Hongi Hika embarked upon a war with Ngati Pou of Whangaroa. Nga Puhi tradition says that Hongi's war with Ngati Pou was in revenge for the killing of his maternal grandfather, Tahapango (Wiremu Wi Hongi). In October 1826, the Wesleyan Mission Station at Whangaroa was attacked, and in January of the following year, Hongi, with a war party of about four hundred, took Pinia pa (near the Whangaroa heads) and Taratara pa (on the western side of the harbour). The fleeing Ngati Pou were pursued through Otangaroa to the Mangamuka Valley, where a further battle took place. During this battle Hongi was shot through the chest by Maratea of Ngati Pou. Hongi survived for a further year, but finally died of the wound on 6 March 1828. (Lee, 1983:136-40; Smith, 1910:398; Williams, 1961:37). It addresses significant gaps in the current literature including consideration of the Pacific context from a microbiological perspective and modem analysis of an inadequate primary New Zealand literature on which present views of Maori health rely. The premise of the thesis is that few diseases could have been imported into New Zealand with the initial Polynesian immigrants, and that the impact of European introduced infectious diseases would have been greater than has been previously realised. The thesis evaluates the incidence of introduced infectious diseases, including the development of immunity, and the impact on Maori beliefs about causality and transmission, and in particular the question of whether the attribution of lung disease to an entrail-eating atua was a post-contact development. The thesis argues that rather than, as previously thought, a wholly pre-contact concept, the idea of the flesh eating lizard god was an attempt to comprehend tuberculosis, and was specific to tuberculosis. -

The thesis may not be reproduced elsewhere without the permission of the Author. iii Abstract Historians portray Papahurihia as the first Māori prophet and founder of a syncretistic religion that combined elements of Judaic and Christian theology with Māori beliefs. They also say he observed a Saturday Sabbath and that his followers were known as Jews. This thesis disputes those conclusions. It re-examines the commentaries of the CMS missionaries in the Bay of Islands from the context of 1830s Protestant evangelicalism and draws on the texts of the Wesleyan and Roman Catholic missionaries and European settlers to show how Papahurihia behaved in various situations. It argues that historians have failed to take account of the way that Protestant and Catholic writers saw Papahurihia through the lenses of their own religions. The thesis recreates Papahurihia in the context of the Ngāpuhi seasonal cycle and links him to the persistence of ceremonies like the hahunga. It argues that historians have overlooked the extent to which he operated on a Māori concept of time and how the missionaries and Europeans made assumptions about the behaviour of Papahurihia and his followers based on the Christian calendar. The thesis concludes that Papahurihia responded to the advent of Christianity in a way that was consistent with the behaviour of tohunga at the time, rather than as the founder of a syncretistic religion.
