CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION This week’s result means that the 1st XI have dropped back to second place in the league table – but are still just 3 points behind the leaders Braywood with two matches to play. CELEBRITY CRICKET MATCH No. 8 – ESSEX CCC – 18/6/1996 This was another benefit match – this time for the Essex skipper Paul Prichard – and again we collaborated with Chesham CC to put the match on at the Meadow. Not all went according to plan though! Unlike last year’s benefit match when John Emburey was called up for a test match, Paul Prichard was able to make his benefit, but behind the scenes we had some horrendous problems. The caterers booked to provide meals and refreshments not only to the players but also to the dozens and dozens of people who had taken advantage of the hospitality suites (which were housed in mini-marquees for hire around the ground and included meals and waiter service) dropped out at the last minute and it fell to the clubs to do the food themselves. One of the Ley Hill wives had all her neighbours marshalled into cooking for her and on the day, we called on the services of a player who used to be a maitre d’hotel, who did a magnificent job of organising all the Ley Hill wives and girlfriends who were working really hard in the pavilion kitchen. The waiters trekking up and down between the pavilion and the marquees were our 15 and 16 year old colts who – initially press-ganged into the role - became extremely enthusiastic when they discovered that those they were serving were quite happy to buy them drinks, and an obliging ice cream van parked in the car park rounded everything off splendidly. While LHCC did the food, CCC were running the bar which was doing an amazing trade on such a lovely, sunny day. Essex CCC played an International XI, led once again by our old friend Derek Randall, (who was a great favourite of our sponsors at Munn & Chapman), and Derek’s team batted first. • Ian Salisbury (England 1992 to 2001) Ian Salisbury Was a Prolific Wicket
Ian Salisbury (England 1992 to 2001) Ian Salisbury was a prolific wicket-taker in county cricket but struggled in his day job in Tests, taking only 20 wickets at large expense. Wisden claimed the leg-spinner’s googly could be picked because of a higher arm action, which negated the threat he posed. Keith Medlycott, his Surrey coach, felt Salisbury was under-bowled and had his confidence diminished by frequent criticism from people who had little understanding of a leggie’s travails. Yet Ian was a willing performer and an excellent tourist. Salisbury’s Test career was a stop-start affair. Over more than eight years, he played in only 15 Tests. Despite these disappointments Salisbury’s determination was never in doubt. Several times as well, he showed more backbone than his supposedly superior English spin colleagues; most notably in India in early 1993. Ian Salisbury also proved to be an excellent nightwatchman, invariably making useful contributions. His Test innings as nightwatchman are shown below. • Cricket Memorabilia Society Postal Auction Closing at Noon 10
CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY POSTAL AUCTION CLOSING AT NOON 10th JULY 2020 Conditions of Postal Sale The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged or unsuitable, or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor.. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. Bids submitted between increments will be accepted, thus a £52 bid will not be rounded either up or down. Items will be sent to successful postal bidders the week after the auction and will be sent by the cheapest rate commensurate with the value and size of the item.

  • The Coming of Nelson and the Ending of Apartheid Cricket: Gatting’S Rebels in South Africa, 1990
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by University of Johannesburg Institutional Repository The Coming of Nelson and the ending of apartheid cricket: Gatting’s rebels in South Africa, 1990 1990 is a pivotal year in South African history. The liberation movements were unbanned and Nelson Mandela walked out of Victor Verster Prison. These developments were to have a major impact on cricket in the country. An English rebel cricket team led by Mike Gatting was touring the country. The newly constituted National Sports Congress (NSC), which had the support of the African National Congress (ANC) was at the forefront of mass protests against the tour. For once Ali Bacher and his White apartheid cricket body were on the backfoot. But suddenly the NSC, despite massive protests against the tour, agreed to negotiate the end of the tour and call off protests. One of the central reasons for this was that the NSC leadership was informed that Mandela was to be released and that the NSC had to contribute to an environment of ‘stability’. These moves and countermoves were to accelerate the drive to cricket unity and see South African cricket participate in the 1992 World Cup, even before apartheid had officially ended. This article returns to those heady days and seeks to examine the mass protests against the tour and show how the broader political environment contributed to the ending of protests and the return to the international fold before the coming of one person-one vote with negative consequences for the game. The article is entitled ‘Nelson’ because in some cricket countries, such as South Africa, the score of 111 heightens expectations that a wicket could fall.
