Four EU-supported films will compete for the at the 77th

The 77th edition of the Venice International Film Festival is taking place from 2 to 12 September 2020. Twelve films supported by Creative Europe MEDIA will be competing in different sections, and four of them aim for the Golden Lion. In addition, industry professionals will discuss how to foster recovery and build resilience in the audiovisual sector during a digital European Film Forum.

Creative Europe MEDIA has invested over EUR 670.000 in the development and distribution of these twelve films.

European Film Forum

This year’s European Film Forum in Venice will take place online on 4 September and will address what can be done to foster recovery and build resilience in the European audiovisual sector. The digital event aims to take stock of the situation for Europe’s audiovisual ecosystem during the past very challenging months, and look at the future, discussing ways to ensure immediate recovery, but also long-term competitiveness of this key industry.

Also in the context of dialogue with stakeholders, MEDIA is organising a closed digital roundtable on the same day in morning (4 September, at 11am) focusing on inmersive content. It will be an opportunity to discuss the current state of the industry, the future of immersive technologies and how to create opportunities to establish European leadership in the field of immersive content.

MEDIA-funded projects in Venice 2020

Besides the films competing in the festival, Creative Europe MEDIA funds other projects taking place during the Venice Film Festival with the main goal of supporting the audiovisual professionals and their works.

Venice Gap Financing Market & Venice VR Market: two markets whose aim is to enable producers and directors to complete their projects. The College – Cinema: a strategic programme for training new filmmakers from all around the world. The Biennale College - Virtual Reality: an innovative programme to fully explore the aesthetic and narrative opportunities offered by VR, providing filmmakers and creative professionals from a wide range of backgrounds with the skills to prepare them to fully engage with 360° interactive immersive future. VOD Market Day: one day of public conferences, B2B meetings and networking, gathering VoD platforms, film professionals and tech companies working with online distribution, but also open to journalists, public institutions and other professionals interested in knowing more the VoD sector. Festival Scope: a platform screening films from the best film festivals, La Biennale included. The ‘Venice Sala Web’ will allow online users to discover a selection of 15 films streamed simultaneously after their presentation on the Lido from 2 to 22 September.
