A BUG’SSecretariat LIFE Synopsis With the death of her mother, housewife and mother Penny Chenery agrees to take over her ailing father’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge. Against all odds, Chenery — with the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin — manages to navigate the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in twenty-five years. Discussion Questions • When Penny’s mother died she stayed at her family’s Virginia home to look after the family business despite having no formal background in horseracing. How do you think she became so successful so quickly? • Penny hoped that Lucien Laurin would come out of retirement to help her train her horse. At first he resisted. Why did he change his mind? • As the horse was growing up, they called him Big Red. When they began to race him in respectable races he was forced to have a more respectable name. What does the name Secretariat mean? Why do you think they chose this name? Do you think the name Secretariat fits the horse? Why? • While there was stress on Penny’s family relationships because she was back and forth between her homes in Colorado and Virginia, her family remained intact. What are some of the reasons you attribute to the fact that the bonds between her and her children, and her and her husband were still strong at the end of the film? • What do you believe was behind Penny’s desire to succeed? At one point in the film Penny realized that they could sell everything from her parent’s estate and pay off what they owed on the farm, but she was not willing.

The first Belmont Stakes (named for August Belmont, the first president of the American jockey club) was run in 1867 at Jerome Park. It was later moved to Belmont Park (which was built by his son, August Belmont, Jr.). In 1873, the first Preakness Stakes was run at Pimlico Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The first Kentucky Derby was run at the Louisville Jockey Club Course in 1875. The course is now known as Churchill Downs. The first "Triple Crown" winner was Sir Barton. Secretariat is the name of a horse owned by Chenery’s family who can bring the business into success by winning many race competitions. The main character, Penny Chenery, is the person who continues leading her parent’s business. The aims of this thesis are to describe the intrinsic aspects which are narrative elements (characters, setting, conflict) and cinematic elements (camera distance, angle, mise-en-scene, and sound) and to analyze the extrinsic aspect which is individuality and the style of leadership reflected by the character Penny Chenery in Secretariat by applying Individualism theory and Path Goal Leadership theory. The writer applies library research and social psychology approach for her research. Keywords: Individualism, Leadership, Path Goal Leadership theory. A. INTRODUCTION Shawn E. Klein in his essay “Community and American Individualism”says that America is a nation comprising individuals and individualism (par 3, page 1). As said by Ralph Emerson in Self-Reliance, “To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, that is genius” (par 1, page 1). It shows that Emerson agrees with people who believe in themselves and do not influence the other’s life.

SECRETARIAT 50th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION March 27-29 in Ashland and at The Meadow For immediate release: February 24, 2020 (Doswell, VA) - On March 30, 1970, a legend was born. A fiery red colt named Secretariat took his first breath in a foaling shed at Christopher Chenery’s Meadow Stable. In 1973, he left the world breathless with his spectacular and incomparable Triple Crown. Those three track records remain unbroken, and his bloodlines still live on today in many of racing’s most successful Thoroughbreds. During the weekend of March 27-29, Secretariat fans from all over the United States will be gathering at the Chenery hometown of Ashland and at the birthplace of the legendary race horse, now known as The Meadow Event Park. On Friday night March 27, fans can enjoy a welcoming reception from 5 - 7 pm. at the Iron Horse Restaurant where they can mix and mingle with members of the Secretariat team. Kate Chenery Tweedy, daughter of the late beloved Penny Chenery who raced Secretariat, will be meeting guests. Tweedy moved from Denver to Ashland and is actively continuing her mother’s legacy. She is co-author of the award-winning book Secretariat’s Meadow – The Land, The Family, The Legend. On Sunday March 29, there will be a Big Red Breakfast with Tweedy at Hanover Tavern, followed by a tour of Ashland and a visit to Penny Chenery’s grave at Woodland Cemetery. Tickets for the welcoming reception on March 27 and the breakfast and Chenery tour on March 29 may be purchased at www.secretariat.com.
