Smith College Club of Colorado Page 3 of 5 Derby Days with Penny Chenery ‘43 ♦ April 2009 The Smith Club of Colorado is proud to host a Derby Days event next April (exact date TBD) with Penny Chenery ‘43. Penny, “The First Lady of Racing,” spent decades working in thoroughbred racing and breeding and is most known as the owner of Secretariat. In 1973, Secretariat became the first horse in 25 years to win the Triple Crown—winning the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. Secretariat, also known as “Big Red,” is one of racing’s most famous horses, and two of the track records he set while winning the Triple Crown are still standing. www.secretariat.com Our event in April will set the scene for the 2009 races, which begin with the 2009 Nominee for Smith College Medal Kentucky Derby on May 2.
