Pepperdine University began in 1937 when , founder of the Western Auto Supply Company, gave the bulk of his fortune to begin a Christian liberal arts college in Los Angeles. The first year the student body numbered 137. Now that small college has grown into a university, with more than 9,000 students on several campuses — the original Vermont Avenue location, the new college in Malibu, the School of Law in Anaheim, and the Year in Europe in , Germany. At the founding of Pepperdine in 1937, one of the departments was that of Business Administration and Economics, whose central objective was to provide students with academic and ethical training designed to prepare them for managerial responsibilities. In December of 1968, the Board of Trustees of Pepperdine authorized the Department of Business Administration and Economics to begin reorganizing as the School of Business and to start operating as such on April 28, 1969. Thus it was the first of Pepperdine's seventeen departments to become a separate school. With the energetic leadership of an outstanding team developed by the Dean, the school has grown from the original handful of students and three professors to an enrollment of over 2300 students and 49 full-time faculty members. (This figure does not include a score of part-time professors.) With a commitment to excellence in innovation, the school offers regular University programs from San Francisco throughout to San Diego, and military bases in Japan, the Philippines, Hawaii, and the East Coast. At the close of this fall trimester, School of Business and Management faculty members are leading their graduates through two separate commencement exercises: at Malibu and in Honolulu. The Rockwell International- Graduate Fellowship Program has provided two coveted grants in the amount of $6,500 each for the academic year to two students. Carter Lee Cole and Ulrich G. Jaeger were selected as the recipients of the grants. Pepperdine is growing and changing rapidly — as an institution must do to keep up with today's world. But through it all, Pepperdine holds fast to the things that never change: faith in traditional values, commitment to service of fellowmen, dedication to the search for truth, upholding the moral values without which life is meaningless. The accomplishment of all that Pepperdine has achieved is directly due to people. . .students, faculty, administration and supportive friends. . .people with vision and strong beliefs — beliefs in the role of independent education, in value—centered, person—centered education. With this kind of dedication, Pepperdine has progressed steadily and deliberately. . .and from all indications this pace will accelerate as new friends and alumni are welcomed to add strength and momentum. That God is, and

That He is revealed uniquely in Christ.

That the educational process cannot, with impunity, be divorced from the divine process.

That the student, as a person of infinite dignity, is the heart of the educational enterprise.

That the liberal arts experience, grounded in spiritual values, offers the student a life with meaning and a faith transcending empirical limitations.

That the quality of student life is a valid concern of the University.

That truth, having nothing to fear from investigation, should be relentlessly pursued in every discipline.

That religious commitment, which is no excuse for mediocrity, demands the highest standards of academic excellence.

That knowledge makes a claim calling, in return, for a life of service.

That the ultimate purpose of education is realized as the student assumes personal responsibility and, thereby, achieves genuine freedom.
