Summer 2017 Internship Program New York State Assembly District 30 -Long Island City, Astoria, Sunnyside, Woodside, Maspeth, Middle Village, Elmhurst- New York State Assembly Member Brian Barnwell seeks Graduate and Undergraduate Interns to partake in the full range of activities of a demanding, and fun, Assembly District Office. The program is offered in the Assembly Member’s District Office in Maspeth, Queens. Interns will primarily work in groups and independently to push NY State legislation and coordinate free services for constituents as well as serving as liaisons with the NYC Council, NY State Senate, Office of the Mayor, the Office of the Governor, NYPD, FDNY, local schools, the Office of the Queens Borough President, NYC Department of Buildings, NYC Department of Transportation, NYC Department of Parks, the MTA, Community Boards, the Commission on Human Rights, the Office of Immigrant Affairs, the NY Mets, NY Knicks, Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Public Theater, the Museum of the Moving Image, and others. Selected Interns will assist in: Meeting with community, civic, and advocacy groups Policy & data research Coordinating community based projects, events, and initiatives Attending community or agency events and meetings Drafting and sending constituent support letters to government agencies Day-to-day office administration Selected Interns will obtain professional experience and/or workshop training in: The Ins and Outs of New York City and New York State Government. Public Speaking & Speech Writing Strategic Communication Professional Etiquette (office, phone, e-mail, social media, and networking) Organizational Change Initiatives Event & Project Management Self-Advocacy and Self-Care The Assembly District Office is accepting applications for full-time or part-time internships with a minimum of 12 hours per week. Cuomo Executive Chamber The Capitol Albany, New York 12224 Dear Governor Cuomo: We write to request the immediate release of $5 million to the “Metropolitan New York Coordinating Council on Jewish Poverty” (known as Met Council) from the 2020/21 Budget Special Public Health Emergency Appropriation Account. As has been widely reported, significant undesignated emergency funds for New York’s food pantries are to be disbursed from this account for expenses in the COVID-19 pandemic. With the Passover holiday starting Wednesday night, Met Council has been working overtime as New York’s only kosher food bank to provide nutrition, tradition, and dignity to vulnerable kosher New Yorkers. This past month alone, they have distributed millions of pounds of free food to 149 distribution sites across New York despite the greatest challenges. Temporary workers are replacing elderly volunteers to keep their warehouse and pantries open. And despite cancelled produce shipments, disrupted supply chains and spikes in the wholesale price of food staples, Met Council is continuing service to 225,000 existing clients and 40 regular food pantries while mobilizing emergency food to thousands of additional families facing new financial hardship. Met Council has even taken it upon themselves to provide homebound Holocaust survivors with food deliveries directly to their homes. Through a new warehouse that they have secured, and with limited private funding, Met Council just launched a pilot with Uber that is delivering food directly to the homes of 500 Holocaust survivors. New York State has reported the highest numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States and that number is growing exponentially. Shortages of basic medical supplies are seriously impacting the state’s ability to respond to this crisis. While government officials and media outlets report shipments of personal protective equipment (PPE), hospitals, nursing homes, and health systems are experiencing a dire shortage of these supplies. Worse yet, a lack of testing materials prevents many communities from ascertaining the full extent of the pandemic. Sadly, most local public health officials do not have clear information as to when supplies will arrive. This on-the-ground reality puts the lives of patients and healthcare personnel in danger. Medical professionals' time intended for preparedness, response, and patient care is instead consumed by navigating breakdowns in the supply chain, altering and re-altering policies around PPE use, and retraining healthcare personnel in increasing tiers of crisis-standard utilization.

In addition to our legislative responsibilities, the Committee worked closely with the Department of Taxation and Finance to promote informed and responsible legislation. The Committee will conduct a hearing to discuss the changes made to the STAR Program in the 2019-2020 New York State Budget. In 2020, the Committee will continue to focus on legislation that will provide real property tax relief, improve assessment practices, enhance efficiency and reduce costs in real property tax administration, and examine the effects of real property tax exemptions.
