Coach Jarrod Skalde SKAWL-dee The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins sent shockwaves through the American Hockey League when they hired Mike Vellucci as the 10th head coach in team history on June 28, 2019. Vellucci’s surprising hiring came less than a month after he hoisted the Calder Cup as head coach of the Charlotte Checkers. Vellucci, 52, was then also given the role of Pittsburgh Penguins assistant general manager and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton GM on Aug. 29 of the same summer. Vellucci has over 20 years of coaching experience at the AHL, Ontario Hockey League and North American Hockey League levels. He spent the past two seasons as the head coach of the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL, compiling the league’s best regular-season record (51-17-7-1) in 2018-19 en route to capturing the Calder Cup. He also won the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award (AHL Coach of the Year) for Charlotte’s historic season. A native of Farmington, Michigan, Vellucci spent five seasons (2014-19) as the Carolina Hurricanes’ assistant general manager and director of hockey operations. Since taking the helm in Charlotte at the start of the 2017- 18 campaign, he compiled a record of 97-43-8-4 in 152 games (.678). Prior to his time in the Hurricanes organization, Vellucci spent 14 seasons with the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL as their general manager and head coach from 2001-14. He was awarded the Matt Leyden Trophy as OHL Coach of the Year twice in his tenure with Plymouth, becoming the first American to do so in 2006-07. He also led the Whalers to an OHL championship in 2007. While in Plymouth, Vellucci coached a plethora of current NHL players including James Neal, Rickard Rakell, Tyler Seguin and Vincent Trocheck, all of which have been NHL All-Stars. Vellucci was originally drafted by the Hartford Whalers in the seventh round (131st overall) in the 1984 NHL Draft. As a defenseman, he appeared in two games for Hartford during the 1987-88 campaign and also played in 40 games with the Binghamton Whalers from 1987-89, recording 18 points (9G-9A). Jarrod Skalde is in his second season as assistant coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He was hired by Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton on Aug. 31, 2018 after spending the previous season in the Penguins organization as development coach with Pittsburgh. The Niagara Falls, Ontario native also has prior head coaching experience at the AHL level, serving as the Norfolk Admirals’ bench boss coach during the 2014-15 campaign. Skalde, 49, had a long professional playing career before becoming a coach. He spent 18 seasons as a pro across North America, Europe and Asia, and he racked up 115 NHL games and 575 AHL games during that time. In his NHL days, Skalde was an original Mighty Duck, playing for Anaheim’s expansion team in 1993-94, in addition to skating for the New Jersey Devils, Calgary Flames, San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars, Atlanta Thrashers and Philadelphia Flyers. He also was the head coach and director of hockey operations for the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones in 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13, as well as head coach of the OHL’s Guelph Storm in 2015-16 and 2016-17. J.D. Forrest is in his fourth season as assistant coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He was hired by the Penguins organization on Aug. 2, 2016. He is responsible for mentoring the Penguins’ defense and coaching the team’s penalty kill units. Prior to joining Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Forrest spent the 2015-16 season coaching Red Bull Salzburg’s farm team in Austria. With Salzburg, Forrest’s team went 32-22 in the international Red Bull Hockey Series and went unbeaten (4-0) in its season-ending tournament. Before coaching Salzburg’s farm team, the 38-year-old from Auburn, N.Y.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips January 13, 2015 Sabres’ McCormick out of hospital after blood clot treatment By Staff Report Associated Press January 12, 2015 BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Sabres forward Cody McCormick has been released from the hospital after being treated for having a blood clot in his leg. Coach Ted Nolan said following practice Monday that McCormick is recuperating at home. Nolan called it a good sign, but cautioned there is no timetable for the player's return. McCormick was hospitalized over the weekend after the clot was discovered. He scored his first goal of the season in a 2-1 loss at Tampa Bay on Friday. The Sabres called up forwards Phil Varone and Zac Dalpe from their AHL affiliate in Rochester. Dalpe has yet to play for the Sabres since signing with the team last summer. Varone is back in Buffalo after playing three games last week. Buffalo hosts Detroit on Tuesday night. So it’s more than appropriate the Wings will be on the other side of the ice tonight when the No.
