A second tier of the system consisted of Ten Temples. This system was extended throughout Japan, effectively giving control to the central government, which administered this system. Not all Rinzai Zen organisations were under such strict state control. The Rinka monasteries, which were primarily located in rural areas rather than cities, had a greater degree of independence. After a period of war Japan was re-united in the Azuchi—Momoyama period.

    Korea Journal, vol. 54, no. 4 (winter 2014): 29-51. © Korean National Commission for UNESCO, 2014 An Investigation of Seung Sahn’s Seon: “Don’t Know” Mind, Ten Gates, and Systems of Hierarchy and Authorization Eun-hwa JANG Abstract The purpose of this article is to identify the relation of the school of Seon (Zen) taught by the Korean master Seung Sahn to both Korean Seon and its Japanese counterpart by focusing on the three innovative devices he employed in his teachings. These are “don’t know” mind, the Ten Gates gongan practice, and the systems of hierarchy and authorization he established, each representing Seung Sahn’s perspective on Seon thought, practice, and authorization of teachers, respectively. As for “don’t know” mind, I analyze its relation to Korean Seon and Huineng’s Chan, and investigate the reasons for its popularity among the Western public. Then, I examine the purpose of the gongan approach known as Ten Gates and determine its relation to the Japanese Rinzai koan curriculum. Finally, I focus on the unique features of the hierarchy and authorization systems, especially the inclusion of lay practitioners in leadership and the authorizing function of the practice community.     When is Zen, Zen?: Remarketing Zen Buddhism for the West Abstract As Zen Buddhism has developed in the West the familiar process of acculturation has occurred. Zen has successfully remarketed and repackaged itself to suit Western culture. Western Zen practitioners can now choose to practice Zen in a variety of styles, ranging from the more traditional to a secular or psychotherapeutic context; and the activities practitioners can undertake within the Zen context now include innovations such as wilderness sesshins and psychotherapeutic counselling. In view of these changes it could be argued that a new koan should be added to the Rinzai Zen koan curriculum: "When is Zen, Zen?" This article details some of the different form of Zen now existent in the West, and examines how these are still legitimated as forms of Zen Buddhism. Introduction In the last one hundred years Zen Buddhism has been practised by an ever-increasing number of people in the Western world. As Zen has developed in Western countries such as the United States of America, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and many countries in both Western and Eastern Europe, it has undergone the acculturation process common to religions adapting to a new cultural context. Changes range from alterations to the structure of retreats to changes in the nature of the student-teacher relationship. However, many traditional elements still remain. For example, Zen is often well-known for a meditation practice called koan practice, which requires practitioners in the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism to meditate on paradoxical questions such as "what is the sound of one-hand?" and "what was your face before you were born?" These are still practised in the West, although new koans are also being added.

Therefore Why Buddhism and the West Need Each Other is an important topic in this era. By understanding the potential of the ideas and their influence on each other we can contribute more immediately to positive and productive transformations in the world. In Dr. Loy’s view the highest ideal of the Western tradition is to restructure society so that it is more just. While the most important goal of Buddhism is to awaken spiritually, which ends dukkha, loosely translated as “suffering.” He puts forth a fruitful idea that the world needs both of these ideals. Not only because they complement each other but also because they in fact need each other. David Robert Loy is a professor, writer, and Zen teacher in the Sanbo Kyodan tradition of Japanese Zen Buddhism. He is a prolific author, whose essays and books have been translated into many languages. His articles appear regularly in the pages of major journals such as Tikkun and Buddhist magazines including Tricycle, Turning Wheel, Shambhala Sun and Buddhadharma, as well as in a variety of scholarly journals.     Theological Trends ZEN AND CHRISTIANS Ama Samy OT LONG AGO, I CAME ACROSS a book presenting the experience of NChristian Zen teachers, mostly from the German-speaking world. They were men and women, Catholics and Protestants, ordained and lay. The contributors generally began by talking about ‘how Zen has changed my Christianity’, as the title of the book indicates.1 Many then went on to make theoretical points about the relationship between Zen and Christianity and about their way of teaching. Some launched immediately into preaching. Most talked about how their concept of God has been changed by Zen’s radically iconoclastic approach. They explained that Zen has no dogmas and no philosophy; indeed, it is not a religion at all. They pointed to Zen’s objectless meditation: munen muso, an experience that is beyond concepts, thoughts or images. They spoke of being healed by Zen’s emphasis on the body, and by its awareness of breathing and of physical sensations; they felt liberated by Zen’s teaching on living in the now. Zen led them to a state of non-duality: union between God and the self, but also between the world and the self, and between the self and others. Theism’s idea of a personal I-Thou relationship between the human person and God was called radically into question. Admittedly, some authors struggled to show how Christian prayer can be in harmony with Zen practice, and questioned Zen’s assertions about simple non-duality. There are hints of a theological dispute going on among some of them.

For these reasons Harada-roshi, Yasutani-roshi’s own master, devised a series of introductory lectures on Zen practice some forty years ago, and it is this material which forms the basis of these lectures by Yasutani-roshi. These lectures are more than a compendium of instructions on theformal aspects of zazen, i.e., sitting, breathing, and concentration. They arean authoritative exposition of the five levels of Zen, of the aims and essentials of zazen, and of the all-important relation of zazen to enlightenment (satori). With them as map and compass the earnest seeker need not grope along hazardous bypaths of the occult, the psychic, or the superstitious, which waste time and often prove harmful, but can proceed directly along a carefully charted course, secure in the knowledge of his ultimate goal.

  • Happy 10Th Anniversary!
    Sun Mountain Zen June 2013 Happy 10th anniversary! In November 2013 it will be ten years since Sun Mountain Zen (SMZ) was founded in Brisbane by Mervyn and Cecilie Lander, dharma successors of Roselyn Stone. Today SMZ includes a third teacher (dharma successor of Mervyn) Arno Hess, and an assis- tant teacher Sue Wolter. SMZ has grown from humble beginnings in East Brisbane to become a vibrant and active Zen community with four groups throughout Brisbane and Kenilworth involving members from not only Queensland but also interstate and over- seas. This edition of Mat chat is dedicated to Sei’un An Roselyn Stone the teacher who trav- eled from Canada each year to bring the dharma to Brisbane and teach, among others, our teachers and the founders of SMZ Mervyn and Cecilie. This period is an interesting and important part of our lineage and I hope you enjoy reading Roselyn's account of it. The Sun Mountain Zen Sangha thanks you Sei’un An. Well, I’m on a chair on top of the cushion as for some ten years now a problem with my lower left leg severely limits the amount of time I can sit on cushions on the floor. This Zendo in the home of two of my Successors, Mervyn and Cecilie Lander was once the Family Room complete with a grand piano, TV comfy chairs and a small pump organ.
