The Capitals’ run of seven consecutive postseason appearances is the second-longest stretch in franchise history (14 straight trips from 1983 to 1996). Coming back from a bye week followed by the All-Star weekend, the Buffalo Sabres forward was ready, ending an 11-game goal drought with the winner Tuesday night. Sheary got an easy tap-in 2:12 into the third period to lift Buffalo over the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4. Artemi Panarin was roundly booed by his home fans when he was introduced in the starting lineup. This was Columbus’ first game since Panarin’s agent said the star forward would not discuss a new contract until after the season. Panarin will be an unrestricted free agent. He wasn’t made available for interviews after the game. Sheary and linemate Evan Rodrigues each had a goal and an assist for the Sabres, who had lost four of five before getting the time off. Sheary has struggled all season and hadn’t scored since before Christmas. “Coming off the break, I had fresh legs and was well-rested,” Sheary said. “I have to give credit to my linemates when credit is due. I think our line in general was buzzing all night and we had good chemistry, and I think all that together just added up to a good night.” Carter Hutton had 33 saves to get his first win since Jan. 8. Buffalo had a solid game except for a stretch at the end of the second period when Columbus scored two quick goals to tie it at 4.

Krueger's return did not go exactly as planned. Despite having only three days to prepare, the Sabres made Krueger's vision a reality by using a fast-and-furious style of play to build a three-goal lead through two periods. However, the Sabres relinquished the lead and needed Jack Eichel's overtime goal with eight seconds remaining to win Krueger's debut, 5-4, against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Penn State's Pegula Ice Arena. The game provided some semblance of how Krueger wants the Sabres to play in 2019-20 and will give his coaching staff some lessons to teach to players. Krueger wasn't the only person in the Sabres' dressing room getting acclimated, either. Dylan Cozens, the 18- year-old center drafted seventh overall in June, made his exhibition debut against NHL competition. Though Cozens did not record a point, he also expressed confidence in his ability to learn from his introduction. “Obviously it’s very fast and guys are so strong and just getting used to the quickness of it," he said afterward.

In those 33 seasons, Hockey East has sent 109 teams to the NCAA Tournament, more than any other conference, and 43 Teams to the Frozen Four. • In the last 12 years, the league has sent 46 teams to the NCAA Tournament, 15 to the Frozen Four, and eight to the championship game, where five won the NCAA title. • 10 players from Hockey East have been named Most Outstanding Player at the Frozen Four. 65 conference skaters have been named to the Frozen Four All-Tour- nament Team. • Hockey East boasts nine Hobey Baker Award winners, 76 Top-10 Finalists and 15 Hat Trick finalists, including 12 over just the last eight seasons. • 39 Hockey East alumni have represented Team USA on the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team in eight Olympic Winter Games. 11 of those 39 have captured a silver medal. • 20 alumni of Hockey East schools are now college head coaches, and 34 others are assistants at the men’s Division-I level. • 624 Hockey East players have been selected in the NHL Entry Draft, including 45 in the first round. • 83 Hockey East alums played in the NHL during the 2016-17 season, including six starting goalies. • 50 league alumni have been members of Stanley Cup winning teams, and two have won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
