HOCKEY EAST BY THE NUMBERS • Hockey East teams have won 13 National Championships, including nine during the league’s 33-year history. In those 33 seasons, Hockey East has sent 109 teams to the NCAA Tournament, more than any other conference, and 43 Teams to the Frozen Four. • In the last 12 years, the league has sent 46 teams to the NCAA Tournament, 15 to the Frozen Four, and eight to the championship game, where five won the NCAA title. • 10 players from Hockey East have been named Most Outstanding Player at the Frozen Four. 65 conference skaters have been named to the Frozen Four All-Tour- nament Team. • Hockey East boasts nine Hobey Baker Award winners, 76 Top-10 Finalists and 15 Hat Trick finalists, including 12 over just the last eight seasons. • 39 Hockey East alumni have represented Team USA on the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team in eight Olympic Winter Games. 11 of those 39 have captured a silver medal. • 20 alumni of Hockey East schools are now college head coaches, and 34 others are assistants at the men’s Division-I level. • 624 Hockey East players have been selected in the NHL Entry Draft, including 45 in the first round. • 83 Hockey East alums played in the NHL during the 2016-17 season, including six starting goalies. • 50 league alumni have been members of Stanley Cup winning teams, and two have won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Most recently, Nick Bonino (BU), Brian Dumoulin (BC), Ron Hainsey (UML), Chad Ruhwedel (UML), Bryan Rust (ND), Conor Sheary (UMass), Scott Wilson (UML) captured the Cup with the 2017 Pittsburgh Penguins..

Ten #NHLStats about the Washington Capitals, who are headed to the postseason for the seventh consecutive season and 31st time in franchise history. 1. Washington has reached the postseason for the 13th time in 14 seasons (since 2007-08), one of two clubs to do so in 2020-21 – the Pittsburgh Penguins have extended their active run to 15 straight postseason appearances. 2. The Capitals’ run of seven consecutive postseason appearances is the second-longest stretch in franchise history (14 straight trips from 1983 to 1996). It also is the second-longest active run in the NHL behind the Penguins (15; 2007–2021) and ahead of the Nashville Predators (6; 2015–2020) – Nashville can match Washington this season. 3. Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, who between them have the Capitals records for career playoff goals, assists, points and games played, will extend their shared franchise benchmark for most years in the postseason (currently 12). Coming back from a bye week followed by the All-Star weekend, the Buffalo Sabres forward was ready, ending an 11-game goal drought with the winner Tuesday night. Sheary got an easy tap-in 2:12 into the third period to lift Buffalo over the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4. Artemi Panarin was roundly booed by his home fans when he was introduced in the starting lineup. This was Columbus’ first game since Panarin’s agent said the star forward would not discuss a new contract until after the season. Panarin will be an unrestricted free agent. He wasn’t made available for interviews after the game. Sheary and linemate Evan Rodrigues each had a goal and an assist for the Sabres, who had lost four of five before getting the time off. Sheary has struggled all season and hadn’t scored since before Christmas. “Coming off the break, I had fresh legs and was well-rested,” Sheary said. “I have to give credit to my linemates when credit is due. I think our line in general was buzzing all night and we had good chemistry, and I think all that together just added up to a good night.” Carter Hutton had 33 saves to get his first win since Jan. 8. Buffalo had a solid game except for a stretch at the end of the second period when Columbus scored two quick goals to tie it at 4.
