NEWSLETTER OF THE SOUTH BENDIGO FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB

May Edition

Welcome to your May 2021 edition of “Blood Lines”. The intent of the Club’s newsletter is to keep members, players and supporters informed about what’s happening at South by recalling the highlights of the month just passed and informing on what’s coming up in the month ahead.

BLOODS OFF TO A GREAT START IN 2021

The end of April and after three rounds of the 2021 Bendigo Football Netball League season sees both our Senior Football and A Grade Netball sides undefeated and siting in second place on their respective league ladders.

A combination of some good, targeted recruiting together with the maturing and development of what in 2019 were both noticeably young playing groups are seen as the primary factors in one of our best starts to a season for some time.

The Senior football sides thrilling one point win over current era BFNL powerhouse Eaglehawk at the QEO in Round 2 being one of the highlights of the season to date, our first victory over the Borough for 12 years!

The next 3 rounds will give a true indication of our improvement this season and both playing groups are looking forward to the challenges ahead with well placed confidence.

VALE KEN GREENWOOD

The Club is sad to inform members and supporters of the passing of our 1961 Best & Fairest Champion Ken Greenwoods on the 18th of April 2021.

Ken retained many friends from his playing days with the Bloods and would still have a reunion every year with some of his old team mates from his playing days at the club.

FORMER Carlton ruckman Ken Greenwood, who shared following duties with the likes of Brian Buckley, Graham Donaldson, John Nicholls, Maurie Sankey and Sergio Silvagni through the 1960s, has died at the age of 79 after a long illness.

Recruited to Carlton after taking the South Bendigo Football Club’s best & fairest honours, Greenwood, wearing the No.5, plied his ruck craft through 55 games for the Blues under the watch of coaches and .

John Nicholls remembered Greenwood, a member of Carlton’s 1962 Grand Final twenty, as a capable footballer deprived of opportunity. “They (Carlton) got him from the Bendigo League, but he was a bit stiff because there were quite a few of us on the scene at the same time – Brian Buckley, Serge (Silvagni), Maurie Sankey and myself - and like ‘Bucks’ (Buckley) he couldn’t get much of a look-in,” Nicholls recalled.

“Ken was a big raw-boned bloke, a bit like Brian Buckley, but probably found it a bit hard to get games . . . and I know I wasn’t going to stand aside for them. “But he went to Footscray, was a good player there and if memory serves, he also served the Bulldogs as an administrator for which he was highly-regarded . . . and he was a good man to go with it.”

Ken Greenwood later rounded out his playing career as captain-coach of VFA club Preston.

Carlton senior players wore black armbands into their Saturday night’s Round 6 match with Brisbane at Marvel Stadium as a mark of respect to the late Ken Greenwood.

THE TWO BRIGHTEST STARS AT TRAINING

Training Tea superstars Jenny Arnold and Wendy Osborne flanked by kitchen hand novices Riley Walsh, Josh Newlan, Will Keck and Jack Nalder

Thursday night Training Teas are a long held tradition at most Football/Netball Clubs and it is no different here at The Bloods.

The club’s Social Rooms are the perfect venue for a hot meal with teammates after a hard training session and for some of the Uni students in our playing groups it is the best one they have for the week .

An integral part of the Club’s weekly routine; where the weekends teams are announced, Club achievement and milestones are acknowledged and club officials communicate game day arrangements, the training teas at South Bendigo would not be possible without the great work of two great Club volunteers Jenny Arnold and Wendy Osborne.

From ordering the key component of the meal from our good sponsors The Old Boundary Hotel as well as preparing sides and deserts through to serving up the meals, they provide an important piece of the fabric which goes to make club life so rewarding to be a part of.

Thanks ladies we all appreciate what you do for our club, especially the 80 or so starving young sports people who converge on our Social Rooms every Thursday night, hungry and full of expectation. They never leave disappointed.

NETBALL

The Netballers have topped off a strong pre-season with some great wins on court, so far collectively our sides have won 12 from 14 games to start off the season and we have all teams sitting in the top four on the ladder. The netball squad continue to have good numbers at training, and it has been impressive to see the girls continue to show high levels of intensity throughout sessions.

The highlight game of the first three rounds was the A-Grade triumph over Eaglehawk, with the Team showing great resilience and teamwork to come from behind and win the game by 2 goals.

Special mentions go out to a few individuals within the netball department: First of all, Carissa Brook, one of our young senior guns who played her 50th game against Eaglehawk in Round 2. Carissa has been a dedicated player commencing in South Bendigo’s Junior Development Squad in 2017, and following through the Under 17’s with South Bendigo since 2018, and this year stepping into the Senior Squad we are excited to continue to see her bring her best qualities to A Res team and see her develop. Carissa is also one of South’s ever reliable umpires, each week backing up playing with umpiring duties. Well Done Carissa!

Looking forward to the next four rounds, we are excited to take on some of the league’s best in Gisborne and Sandhurst.

FOOTBALL

Round 1 V Castlemaine at Castlemaine Camp Reserve

On the football front to say that our lads were champing at the bit to get back into football would be an understatement.

Our under 18’s although undermanned were ably supported by a few permit players which also included several U16 lads who acquitted themselves well. Outclassed by a tall Castlemaine side we were soundly beaten on the day but had some very consistent performances from Myles Livingstone and Dec McMahon whose solid preseason alongside our senior group was apparent. Others who played well were Will Crane, and Zac Walsh. Coach Zac Hare was pleased to see some good passages form our lads and is hopeful of growing some numbers through the next few weeks.

Our reserves, blessed with big numbers to choose from, had plenty of talent on show and easily accounted for the Castlemaine side. Alex Smith Ralph and Matt Long were on fire in front of the goals with some great marking in the trying conditions. Kade Blow, Tyler McCloud and Jed Rouse sporting the famous 36 jumper gave us great drive out of the centre in a good all round performance.

Senior Coach Nathan Horbury had our senior group up and ready for the game but unfortunately we didn’t have our kicking boots on with some 11 points on the board before the first goal. It wasn’t the ideal ground for our players and Castlemaine managed to keep the game condensed to the centre corridor playing more direct in the first quarter. It was the first look at our “new” 2020 recruits for many of our supporters, Mike Herlihy, Oli Simpson, Oscar White and Cooper Leon all used the ball well and were hard at it. The side clicked into gear after that with Kaiden Antonowicz, Mikey Herlihy and Brock Harvey all finding their range in blustery conditions. Good all round contributions from the whole side with co- captain Zac Hare and Will Keck amongst our best on the day .

50 +1 gamer Brock Harvey

Special mention to 51 gamer Brock Harvey who we may have missed recognising his milestone game back in 2019, Brock is a key part of our forward structure and his athleticism and ability to find the ball will prove to be a headache for our opposition in the games ahead.

Round 2 V Eaglehawk at Q.E.O.

It was great to be back on the QEO after so long and despite a swirly early Autumn breeze the weather was great for our return. To say the lads were keen to play would be an understatement with Will Keck and Jesse Sheahan at the ground a full hour before their allotted stint in the canteen, well done boys!

Our thirds continue to pick up players and with the help of a few Under 16’s the boys played their hearts out against a very skilled Eaglehawk team. Scores aside, the team were competitive and with the addition of a few taller players this week we won’t be too far away. Myles Livingstone, Will Crane and Dec McMahon were again in our best but Harry Downing, Will Rodda and Harrison Bysouth showed that with a few more games under their belts they will be good contributors.

Our Ressies had a real game on their hands in the early quarters with the Borough jumping out to an early lead. Lachy Furness and Nathan Newlan got things happening around the ground with Jack Maher providing some strong forward leads paving the way for Alex Smith Ralph and Co-coach Jayden Sheean to get some goals on the board. The backline was under pressure most of the day with the ball moving up and down the ground very quickly largely due to the high skill level of both teams, Regan Harvey was instrumental in our rebounding efforts and set up a number of forward 50 entries from deep in defence. The second and third quarter saw the Bloods start to dominate in patches but the spirited efforts from Eaglehawk had them bounce back deep into the last quarter. A well fought out win with plenty for Co-Coaches Tim Arnold and Jayden Sheean to contemplate for the following week’s game against Kyneton.

Nathan Newlan and Regan Harvey key players in the Reserves strong win over Eaglehawk

The senior game was one for the ages, we jumped out well early with great play from Nathan Horbury who was literally impacting all over the ground ending up with 2 goals in the first quarter and setting the level for how he wanted our lads to attack the ball. Oli Simpson, Cooper Leon and Oscar White continued their good form from last week and set up a number of opportunities that we sometime struggled to take advantage of in front of goal with the swirling wind affecting both sides accuracy. Tom Brereton, Brody Haddow and Mikey Herlihy were ferocious at the contest and Daniel Johnstone was taking some telling marks in defence. Sunny Brasier was proving a handful for the Borough defence, his athleticism and pace around the forward line a great addition from the first gamer. Also having his first senior game for the club Will McCaig showed he has plenty to offer. It was a very entertaining game with barely more than two goals separating both sides all day and with the ball deep in the Eaglehawk forward line with a couple of minutes to go and scores tied most supporters were predicting that we might hang on for a draw. But some hard running from our lads, again Nathan Horbury showing his leadership, had the ball delivered into Kaiden Antonowitz

with seconds to go, siren sounding a score was all we needed and as the ball hit the goal post there was considerable joy from supporters and players against a side that President Alan Ellis rightly suggested at the post game function have been a yardstick for our league over recent years

Click on the link to see Kaiden Antonowitz’s final kick after the siren. https://www.facebook.com/South-Bendigo-FNC-227064977348132/videos/4134162366661149

An inspirational game from Coach Nathan Horbury and a prominent debut from Sunny Brazier just some of the highlights in our first win over the Borough in 12 years’

New recruits Cooper Leon, Oli Simpson and Oscar White have all made a big impact since joining the Bloods, with all 3 being huge contributors in our 1 point win over Eaglehawk.

Round 3 V Kyneton at Kyneton Show Grounds. A trip down to Kyneton to play a twilight game 3 months ago didn’t sound like such a big concern but with a few injuries to some key players and Nathan Horbury having other coaching duties on Saturday (see earlier article), the Tigers gave us a real contest.

With the revised start time several of our regular U18s were unavailable but having picked up Harry Bysouth, Emmanuel Boboya, Nick Martini and Max Quinn we’re starting get into some shape thanks to the hard work of Coach Zac Hare. The lads battled bravely against a bigger Tiger team with great application of effort from the majority of the boys, Will Crane knows only one way and Zac Walsh provided some great leadership especially holding down the centre half back position. Max Quinn showed that his pace will be a huge asset for the side moving forward and Harry Downing, in only his second game, has a real future with us. Despite a poor scoreboard showing the lads are starting to knit together and with the return of a few numbers this week we look forward to better times ahead.

The Reserves showed glimpses of good team football, but the Kyneton side were always going to keep the pressure on which meant that quick movement through teammates was always a better option than trying to beat an opponent first then deliver. As a terrific exponent of this Regan Harvey was exceptional all day bringing others into the context and providing opportunities for our key forwards in Jack Maher and Alex Smith Ralf. Jack Nalder was great in close and elusive up forward and with the experience of Jayden Sheean, Nathan Newland and Lachy Furness around the ground the lads greater skill level was evident in the second half. Regan Harvey’s goal contribution showed how committed he was all day with a best on ground performance.

By the time the seniors started we had the obligatory rain spell albeit brief which dropped the temperature for supporters down a few degrees, not so on the ground however where the Tigers were prepared to scrap and with a big local crowd to push them on they weren’t taking a backward step. Tom Brereton, Mikey Herlihy, Cooper and Brody Haddow were in the thick of it and with a few minutes to go in the second quarter it appeared that our lads where getting the upper hand with some end to end ball movement and pin point accuracy to team mates. Two quick goals to the Tigers before halftime had us go into the big break knowing that they weren’t going to lie down. Rather than come back out and play our style it looked like we were prepared to go head to head with the opposition in a style that suited them more, Daniel Nalder, Daniel Johnstone, Andy Van Hueman and Cam Taggett were forced to compete for contested marks and the game was being played down the centre corridor which kept opportunities down for our forwards. Will Keck was classy with his ball use all day and providing scoring opportunities by willing himself into the contest, Sunny Brazier was being a real focus up forward for us and Kaiden Antonowitz was always threatening, kicking a couple of goals against the odds. The last quarter was going to be tight, but we were spreading the ball a lot better and still running hard, the team lifting in the last 15 minutes all over to overcome a tenacious Kyneton outfit.

Daniel Johnstone and Andy Van Hueman both played strong defensive roles in South’s win over Kyneton
