Baseball, 7C Friday, May 27, 2016 ★★ TSSAASPRINGFLING SECBASEBALL Vote TWICE AS NICE looms on sites for tourney ■ Memphis is among choices By Tom Schad [email protected] 901-529-2525 As the Southeastern Confer- ence baseball tournament wraps up in Hoover, Alabama, this weekend, there is a chance that the event may soon have a new home — possibly in Memphis. SEC athletic directors are expected to vote between five bids for the tournament at next week’s spring meetings in Des- tin, Florida, and a decision could be announced by the conclusion of the meetings June 3. Memphis is one of five cities vying to host the event beginning in 2017, alongside Jacksonville, Nash- ville, New Orleans and Hoover, which has been the event’s host for 19 consecutive years. SEC officials have visited AutoZone Park, among other possible venues, and Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau president Kevin Kane said he is optimistic about the city’s pro- posal. “I think we’ve got a very com- pelling story and a very com- petitive bid,” Kane said Thurs- day. “Will they move it (out of Hoover)? We don’t know. … (But) we’ve had very good dialogue with the Southeastern Confer- ence. They know we very much would be honored and would love to host the tournament.” Memphis’ bid — which was submitted by the CVB, the Mem- phis Redbirds and the Memphis SportsCouncilinFebruary—is for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 tour- naments, with options for 2020 and 2021. Memphis submitted an unsuccessful bid to host the event in 2011. “The last time this came up for bid, it was prior to a lot of the changes that have happened here,” Redbirds general manager Craig Unger said. “So this is an opportunity for us to kind of go back to them and show them PHOTOS BY JIM WEBER / THE COMMERCIAL APPEAL some of the changes that we’ve Harding Academy’s Antoinette Lewis (right) gets a hug from Briarcrest’s Alyiah Wells after Lewis threw nearly 40 feet to win the D2 girls shot put made, that we continue to en- state championship on Thursday at Spring Fling in Murfreesboro. • Roger Federer Knew He Needed to Bounce Back on Tuesday at The
Roger Federer knew he needed to bounce back on Tuesday at the Nitto ATP Finals after suffering a straight-sets loss in his opening match of the tournament against Dominic Thiem. And the Swiss superstar did just that, defeating Matteo Berrettini 7-6(2), 6-3 behind a clear game plan and effective serving. According to Hawkeye, Federer zoned in on the Berrettini backhand and made sure to keep the points short in his triumph. The six-time Nitto ATP Finals champion struck 62 per cent of his shots to the Berrettini backhand. That tactic was most visible when the 38-year-old had a forehand, as he targeted the Italian's backhand with 68 per cent of his shots off that wing. Federer made a concerted effort to keep the ball out of the middle of the court. He hit just three balls mid-rally (excluding serves and returns) into the middle third of the court, whereas Berrettini directed 24 per cent of his balls down the middle. Federer Shot Placement vs. Berrettini Federer Forehand Placement vs. Berrettini Berrettini spread his forehands around far more than Federer. He hit just 47 per cent of his forehands to the 103-time tour-level titlist's backhand, while going to the Swiss' forehand 41 per cent of the time. Berrettini Forehand Placement vs. Federer Federer interestingly employed a different tactic with his serve. Instead of continuing to attack the Italian's backhand, he went to Berrettini's forehand. He hit 59 per cent of his first serves in the ad court to the forehand and 48 per cent in the deuce court.

  • Murray Drawn to Face Willis, Ivanisevic in Tie Break Tens Group Stages
Murray Drawn To Face Willis, Ivanisevic In Tie Break Tens Group Stages The World No.2 Andy Murray has been drawn to face the 2001 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic and unlikely Wimbledon hero Marcus Willis in the round- robin stages of Tie Break Tens, which takes place on Sunday night. World No.10 Dominic Thiem, the 2008 Australian Open runner-up Jo Wilfried Tsonga and former World No.2 Tommy Haas will contest the other group. The top two players in each group will advance to the semifinals. The winner of the final will receive a winner-takes-all cheque for $250,000. Each match will take the form of a quick-fire, first-to-10 point tie-break (with a margin of two points). Willis will be taking on a childhood hero in Ivanisevic, and arguably the best player in the world at the moment in Murray. He still thinks he can win. ‘Could I beat Andy Murray in a ten-point tie-break? Probably,” said Willis. “It’s ten points. Accrington Stanley would lose to Manchester United over 90 minutes, but in a 10-minute match they would stand a chance. I think it will suit my game. It’s exciting, it’s a sprint, and the crowd are going to be into it. I’m lucky to have been given this opportunity and I’m going to get in there.” Tie Break Tens Vienna will take place at 7pm CET on Sunday (6pm UK). It will be televised live on ORF in Austria, and Sky Sports in the UK.

  • Edmund's Journey Started with Murray
Edmund’s Journey Started With Murray Win Kyle Edmund takes on Gael Monfils in the second round of Wimbledon on Thursday, and if tie-breaks and big moments are required, the 22-year-old British player is unlikely to blink. In December 2015, Edmund enjoyed a life-changing moment when he beat Andy Murray 10- 7 in the final of the inaugural Tie Break Tens event at the Royal Albert Hall in London. As well as sampling the feeling of beating Murray for the first time, it won Edmund the winner-take-all cheque of $250,000. A year later he finished inside the world’s Top 50. “To win that amount of money in one night was amazing - more than I had won for the whole of 2015, and for a young player like me it was brilliant because I was able to invest in my team, and in my career generally. There are a lot of expenses involved in trying to make it in tennis so winning Tie Break Tens played a part in me going from outside the world’s Top 100 to inside the Top 50 over the last 11 months.” Tie Break Tens is a new quick fire, short-format version of tennis in which only first-to-ten point tie-breaks are played. An entire event is played in a single evening. Subsequent events were played in Vienna late last year (Dominic Thiem beat Murray in the final), and in Madrid in May this year, where men’s and women’s events ran side-by-side in a spectacular night inside The Magic Box (Caja Magica).

  • 10 Things to Watch in Shanghai Rolex Shanghai Masters
ROLEX SHANGHAI MASTERS STORYLINES Qi Zhong Tennis Center | Shanghai, China | 7-14 October 2018 Draw: S-56, D-28 | Prize Money: $7,086,700 | Surface: Outdoor Hard ATP World Tour Info Tournament Info ATP PR & Marketing ATPWorldTour.com RolexShanghaiMasters.com Richard Evans: [email protected] Twitter: @ATPWorldTour @SH_RolexMasters Press Office: [email protected] Facebook: @ATPWorldTour @RolexSHMasters TV & Radio: TennisTV.com 10 THINGS TO WATCH IN SHANGHAI 1) Federer vs. Djokovic: Two-time champion Roger Federer and three-time champion Novak Djokovic will battle for No. 2 in the ATP Rankings this week at the Rolex Shanghai Masters. Federer leads Djokovic by 455 points entering the tournament. But the Swiss is defending 1,000 points as the reigning champion. Djokovic missed the 2017 event and is not defending any points. 2) Advantage Federer: As the Top 2 seeds, Federer and Djokovic could meet in the Rolex Shanghai Masters final for the first time. Djokovic leads their head-to-head 24-22 overall, but Federer is 2-0 in Shanghai with straight-set wins in the 2010 and 2014 semi-finals. Since starting the 2018 season a career-best 17-0, Federer is 19-6 with only one title at the ATP World Tour 250 event in Stuttgart. 3) Race for No. 1: If he wins a record fourth Shanghai title, Djokovic will trail World No. 1 Rafael Nadal by just 35 points in the ATP Race to London. The race becomes the year-end rankings following the Nitto ATP Finals. Both Djokovic and Nadal are trying to finish No. 1 for the fifth time.
