    West Dunbartonshire Local Development Plan Proposed Plan SEPTEMBER 2013 Foreword Welcome to the Local Development Plan for West Dunbartonshire. This is a plan for challenging economic times. It seeks to strike the correct balance between encouraging the development of our economy and communities whilst protecting the environment that makes West Dunbartonshire an attractive place to live, visit and invest. The Plan has a focus on ‘Our Changing Places’, those areas and sites within West Dunbartonshire where the Council wants or expects to see change. The Plan provides a positive framework to try and get these regeneration sites moving. The Plan identifies land for over 5,000 new houses. However, as I’ve been pedalling along (at a fairly modest pace it must be said!) the chain has Magazine been picking up bits of dirt making it more and more difficult to keep on the move. What a relief to get the chain cleaned up last week and to stop feeling every journey was uphill! As we go about our day to day lives, it’s very easy to pick up habits that hold us back from following Jesus. Sometimes, these things take hold of us almost without our noticing. Over time, however, they slow up our spiritual progress. In the letter to the Hebrews, we’re told to “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles” so that we can “run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1). As we celebrate St Columba’s 50th Anniversary this autumn, what better time to examine whether there’s anything holding us back from following Jesus? If there is, and we’re prepared to ditch it, we’ll find it a whole lot easier to run the race God has marked out for us. This essential question has been discussed over the last centuries through and through and the presented paper tries to offer a new perspective – this time by means of a landscape study and gaining an understanding of the positioning of individual forts on one of the short­‑lived Roman frontiers, the Antonine Wall. In the spotlight of this study is the spatial positioning of individual forts and fortlets on the above­‑mentioned frontier in terms of what could have been seen from them (visibility to the landscape and intervisibility with other Roman military installations) and how unique their locations were in terms of general accessibility (could they serve as natural blocking points?). A new approach is presented by using the Viewshed and Cost path analyses of the digital elevation model of the broader area around the Antonine Wall. INTRODUCTION Whenever we study the theme of Roman frontiers, we should always try to answer the fun- damental question: how did Roman frontiers actually work?
