Twitter Usage by ESPN Fantasy Sport Columnists Brandon Doyle Ithaca College Mead Loop Associate Professor, Ithaca College As a business, U.S. fantasy sports has grown into a $2 billion annual enterprise with 32 million players as of June 2011.1 Fantasy sports participants use such sources as microblogs, Internet, cell phones, television and print at much higher levels as a result of their participation. And how participants’ fantasy teams and players performed altered perceptions of their favorite teams.2 This reflects the Attitude-Behavior relation upon mere observance of fantasy sports. Fantasy sports has been defined as selecting players from sports to be on a team managed by a participant or fan in competition for points with other participants and fans.3 Fantasy sports has been identified as a top-10 area for sports-related media research.4 An executive vice president at ESPN listed fantasy players as the heaviest users of media across platforms, including the present study involving Twitter.5 User and Gratification Theory suggests that playing fantasy games reflects the diversion function of consuming media, as well as developing personal relationships with others and elevating personal identity. Three categories of participants have been identified: 1) Enthusiasts use gaming to expand their appreciation of the game; 2) socializers use gaming as a way to stay connected with friends; and 3) competitors use it for money or pride.6 Fantasy football participants, in particular, are more likely to attend at least one game per season and attend between .22 and .57 more games per season than non- players. -
Training Through Sweat… and Study
TRAINING THROUGH SWEAT… AND STUDY It is undeniable that players in the NFL must keep their bodies in peak condition through countless hours in the gym and on the field, but keeping up with the physical requirements of the sport only takes care of half of the preparation. When it comes to tasting victory on game day, players have to be on the ball in the class room as well as in the weight room. Super Bowl XLI MVP and Colts quarterback PEYTON MANNING is known for his cerebral approach to his position. Manning’s knowledge of the playbook as well as his ability to recognize and adjust to variable defensive setups has greatly contributed to his success, but not without tremendous discipline off the field. "I study every angle and get into very specific detail – the throws to the right, throws to the left," Manning says. "I study the sack tape, study the interception tape, study the touchdown tape. You really try to break it down very specifically and realize what things you did well, what things you can do better on." Given the increasing competitiveness in the NFL, it’s no wonder that teams around the league are putting more muscle into their mental prep. Here is how five players and coaches prepare for game day: PLAYER/COACH PREPARATION GARY BRACKETT “During the week, my off-the-field preparation consists of a lot of film study. I try to watch the last couple Indianapolis LB of games the opponent played and see if I can notice any tendencies from the players and the things they like to do. -

MANNING AGAIN ON SUNDAY NIGHT! Two 8-0 teams? Win this week as the NFL reaches the midpoint of its season and the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts can match a milestone reached only three times in NFL history and not since 1990. Remember the Portsmouth Spartans (forerunner of the Detroit Lions)? They and the Green Bay Packers were the first to go 8-0 in a season: TWO AT 8-0 SEASON 8-0 TEAMS 1931 Green Bay Packers & Portsmouth Spartans 1934 Chicago Bears & Detroit Lions 1990 New York Giants & San Francisco 49ers 2006 Chicago Bears & Indianapolis Colts (both 7-0) The Colts last week tied the 1929-31 Packers as the only teams to win at least their first seven games in consecutive seasons. Green Bay started 10-0, 8-0 and 9-0 in those years. “It’s incredible,” says Colts linebacker GARY BRACKETT. “Sometimes, people take it for granted that you’re supposed to win. But 7-0 in two consecutive seasons is really something.” As the NFL reaches midseason, teams are starting to look down the road to the playoffs. “It’s not over,” says wide receiver DONALD DRIVER of the 3-4 Packers, who have won their last two. -

Prince Albert II of Monaco I am thrilled that the principality will host once again the “IOC World Conference on Prevention of injury and Illness in Sport” from 16 to 18 March 2017. My sincere thanks to the organizers who have taken the decision to come back to Monaco after the 2011 and 2014 editions. Injury and illness represents for any athlete periods of doubt and decline during which he cannot achieve his ultimate goal of performing and enhancing his performance. The protection and preservation of their physical integrity are priorities for the Olympic Movement and all National Olympic Committees. I would like to include new challenges linked to environmental issues such as harmful air quality, water pollution, the prevalence of the athletes whether at a competition level or for the practice of leisure sport. -
