GOLDEN KNIGHTS LAST GAME RECAP October 22 - Vegas Golden Knights 2, Chicago Blackhawks 1 (SO) The Vegas Golden Knights closed out their three-game road trip with a dramatic 2-1 shootout win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night to improve to 7-4-0 overall. The teams traded chances in the first 20 minutes, but it was the Blackhawks with the advantage going into the first intermission thanks to a late tally from Kirby Dach. After a scoreless second period, Nick Holden evened the scoring with a goal in the final moments just after Vegas pulled its own goalie. During the 3-on-3 period of overtime, neither team found the back of the net sending the game into a shootout. NOTES FOR TONIGHT Last Season Against The Avalanche Vegas finished the 2018-19 season going 1-2-0 against the Colorado Avalanche. The Golden Knights opened up the season series with a 2-1 victory over Colorado in Las Vegas (Dec. 27). However, Vegas would drop the next two games in Denver, CO, losing 3-0 (Feb. 18) and 4-3 (March 27). Paul Stastny led the Golden Knights with four points (2G, 2A) in three games against his former club. Alex Tuch also finished multiple points against the Avalanche, tallying three points (1G, 2A) in three games. In two seasons, Vegas owns a 3-2-1 record against Colorado.

Century Mark The Golden Knights captured their 100th victory as a franchise with a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, giving Vegas a cumulative record of 100-59-14. It took the organization 173 regular-season games to reach the century mark as they became the fourth franchise in NHL history to achieve the feat in less than 200 games. The only team to do it quicker than the Golden Knights was the original Ottawa Senators, who reached the mark in 165 games. The Montreal Canadiens (183 GP) & (190 GP) also achieved the feat in less than 200 games.

Atop The Pacific Vegas has held a top-three position in the Pacific Division for 79% of their time in the League (316 of 396 days of regular-season play). Since divisions were first introduced in 1926-27, only two NHL franchises have finished among the top three in their division in at least each of their first three seasons: the (American Division; 1926-27) & St. Louis Blues (West Division; 1967-68).

Rookie Impacts Cody Glass, the Golden Knights’ first-ever selection in the NHL Draft (No. 6 in 2017), scored in his League debut. At 20 years, 184 days, the Winnipeg, MB native became the youngest player to score a goal for the club while also becoming the first player to appear in a regular-season contest with the franchise after being drafted by them. On the season, he has recorded six points (2G, 4A) in 11 games. Defenseman Nic Hague has also made his presence felt, recording his first career points, assists, in back-to-back games (Oct. 12-13). Defenseman Jake Bischoff made his NHL debut at Pittsburgh (Oct. 19).

Stone Age Vegas forward Mark Stone turned in back-to-back-to-back multi-point games to start the 2019-20 season (Oct. 2-8). It was the first time in his career that he recorded multiple points in three straight games to start a season & only the fourth time in his career he has had at least two points in three consecutive games. He recorded another multi-point game against Calgary (Oct. 12) & leads the Golden Knights with 14 points (6G, 8A). He also recorded his 200th career assist against Ottawa (Oct. 17). This season, Stone is one of four players in the league who have tallied at least six goals and six assists this season, joining Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl (8G, 11A), Boston's David Pastrnak (10G, 7A) and Buffalo's Jack Eichel (6G, 8A). Since joining the Golden Knights, the Winnipeg, MB native has tallied 25 points (11G, 14A) in 29 regular-season games. He also finished with 12 points (6G, 6A) in seven postseason games during the 2019 playoffs.

Reaves Finishing Checks After leading the league in hits during the 2018-19 season, Vegas forward Ryan Reaves is picking up where he left off to start the 2019-20 season. Through 11 games, the Winnipeg, MB native has recorded 51 hits, which leads the league. He tallied nine hits against San Jose (Oct. 4), which matched the most he's recorded while wearing a VGK sweater.

LAST GAME - Oct. 21 (Colorado 1 at St. Louis 3) Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and two assists to lead the Blues to a 3-1 victory over the Avalanche in St. Louis. Nathan MacKinnon had the lone goal for Colorado to extend his season-opening point streak to nine games. Philipp Grubauer made 22 saves as the Avs suffered their first regulation defeat of 2019-20.

TODAY The Avalanche heads to Las Vegas for a "Nevada Day" matinee matchup against the Golden Knights. Today is the first half of a back- to-back for the Avs, who will host Anaheim tomorrow night. This is the end of a season-long, six-game road trip, although the team did return home for a few days after losing in St. Louis on Monday. Colorado is 3-1-1 on this trip. The Avs will have three road trips of five or more games for just the second time in franchise history (also 1999-00). The Avalanche went 4-0 on their season-opening, four- game homestand, the club's longest home stay to begin a season in franchise history.

Colorado's 7-1-1 (15 points) record equals the fourth-best mark through nine games in franchise history (note: the other four teams on this list all won their 10th game).

STARTING STRONG Colorado was the NHL's last undefeated team (5-0-0) and the last team without a regulation loss (7-0-1). Colorado's 7-0-1 (15 points) start was its best through eight games in franchise history, and the eight-game point streak to begin the campaign was the second- longest to start a season in franchise history (11, 9-0-2, 2000-01). It was the longest by any team to open a campaign since the Canadiens began 2016-17 with a 10-game run (9-0-1).

DAYTIME HOCKEY Today is the first of six afternoon games for the Avalanche this season (four at home and two on the road). The Avs were 7-4-2 in afternoon games last year.

BACK-TO-BACK The Avs are playing their second back-to-back games of the season, as they take on the Knights this afternoon before hosting the Anaheim Ducks tomorrow night at Pepsi Center. Colorado swept its first back-to-back, beating Florida and Tampa on the road last weekend. The Avs, who will play 12 back-to-backs this year, had 11 last season, going 5-3-3 in both the first and second game.

STREAKING YET AGAIN With points in all nine games this season, Nathan MacKinnon has tied the Avalanche record (since 1995-96) for the longest scoring streak to start a season, a mark he already equaled last year.

MacKinnon is the fifth player in NHL history to record a season-opening point streak of nine or more games in consecutive seasons, joining Wayne Gretzky (four straight, 1982-83 to 1985-86), Charlie Simmer (1979-80 to 1980-81), Guy Lafleur (1975-76 to 1976-77) and Rod Gilbert (1971-72 to 1972-73).

LIGHTING THE LAMP Colorado is averaging 4.00 goals-per-game this season, second in the NHL as of Thursday (Nashville 4.22). The Avs have scored five- plus goals in four of their nine games and have scored four or more goals in six of their nine contests. The Avalanche's +12 goal differential is also second (Buffalo +14). The Avs are out-scoring their opponents 11-4 in the third period. Colorado has gotten goals from 14 different players, which includes seven players with three or more goals and four players with four-plus goals. Colorado finished 10th last season with 258 goals, the club's highest total since 2006-07 (267).

MAKING EACH PERIOD COUNT The Avs have scored at least one goal in 20 of their 27 regulation periods (22 of 30 if you include overtime). Colorado scored in each of its first nine periods this season, becoming the first Avalanche team to ever do that to open a campaign. Prior to relocating, the Nordiques scored in their first nine periods twice: 1982-83 (also nine) and 1992-93 (first 18).

RECORD OCTOBER Cale Makar leads all NHL rookies in assists (8) and ranks second in points (8). Makar's eight helpers have tied the Avalanche record (since 1995-96) for the most assists by a rookie defenseman in a single month. Makar's eight points are the most ever by an Avs defenseman in October and tied for the third-most by a Colorado rookie blueliner in any month.

CONNECTIONS Pierre-Edouard Bellemare played for Vegas during their first two seasons ... Paul Stastny was drafted by Colorado (second round, 44th overall) in 2005 and played his first eight seasons with the Avalanche from 2006-14 ... Nick Holden skated for Colorado from 2013-16.

BETWEEN THE PIPES As of Thursday, the Avalanche ranked eighth in team Sv% (.924) and ninth in GAA (2.62) • Philipp Grubauer is 5-1-1 this season and 12-1-3 in his last 16 regular-season starts. He was the first Avs netminder to start a season 4-0-0 since 2013-14 (J.S. Giguere 7-0-0, Semyon Varlamov 5-0-0). • Pavel Francouz has won his first two career starts, stopping 78-of-82 shots (.951). Only one Avalanche netminder has ever won his first three career starts: David Aebischer (four) in 2000-01.

HIGH FIVE Cale Makar was the first defenseman in franchise history and just the fifth defender in NHL history to open his NHL career with a five- game point streak. In fact, Makar's five-game streak ended up tied for the second-longest by a blueliner to begin a career in NHL history. Furthermore, Makar also equaled the Avalanche record (since 1995-96) for the longest streak to start a career at any position, a mark Alex Tanguay set to begin his career in 1999-00. Makar, who joined the Avs during their first round series against Calgary last spring, was the first defenseman in league history to score a goal while making his NHL debut in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

HOME COOKING Colorado is 4-0 at Pepsi Center this year and has won 10 straight regular-season home games dating back to last year, matching the franchise record for the longest home winning streak including multiple seasons. The Avs are 15-2-1 in their last 18 regular-season contests on home ice. If you include the club's 4-1 home record during the playoffs, the Avs are 14-1-0 in their last 15 games at Pepsi Center and 19-3-1 in their last 23. • The last time Colorado won its first four home games to start a season was in 2009-10 (6-0-0). • This marks the fourth time that Colorado/Quebec has ever won 10 consecutive home games and the first time over multiple seasons. The Avs won 10 straight at Pepsi Center in 2017-18 and the Nordiques won 10 straight at Le Colisee twice: 1994-95 and 1983-84. • The Avalanche's 4-0-0 season-opening homestand marked the first time they've swept a homestand of at least four games since Dec. 17-23, 2011 (4-0-0).

O' Gabriel Landeskog, who was named captain on Sept. 4, 2012, is in his eighth season in that role. He was the youngest captain in NHL history when he assumed the job at 19 years, 286 days, a title he held for four years before Connor McDavid surpassed him on Oct. 5, 2016 (19 years, 266 days). Only six active captains have worn the "C" for a longer period of time.
