Join us in celebrating the arrival of spring during our Florida Beach Halfathon and 5K Race at Fort De Soto Park, located near St. Petersburg on Florida's beautiful west coast at the mouth of Tampa Bay.

Both our courses are located entirely in Ft. De Soto Park, starting and finishing adjacent to the park's North Beach, regularly recognized as one of the nation's best beaches. These races will be run on paved access roads and recreational trails.

97 They are extremely flat courses, with no bridges, overpasses, or discernible inclines. They are accurately measured and certified by the USATF.

Both races start the same, with a 5K loop that returns athletes to the start/finish area. Post-race party begins as the 5K athletes arrive, while the Halfathoners will continue on the 10-mile out-and-back tour of Ft. De Soto Park.

Finish line treats will include fresh fruit, hot pasta, cold Michelob Ultra, and live entertainment.

The race will honor the memory of two-time Indy 500 Champion Dan Wheldon. The event will take place at Andersen RacePark, located at 10101 U.S. Highway 41 N. in Palmetto. Participants can race a car for $250 (day of event registration). Advance registration, available online, is only $200. The total entry fee will benefit All Children's Hospital, an organization that Dan and his wife Susie Wheldon generously supported.

Suncoast Center presents ART HEALS, a powerful exhibit featuring artwork created by survivors of sexual violence. The event takes place during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, on ArtWalk Night, and in partnership with several of St. Pete's artists and arts organizations. Local artists have worked with survivors on several pieces and a few of those artists will also be exhibiting their work. The artwork provides an intimate window into the pain and healing found along these survivors' inspirational personal journeys of recovery. The community is invited to experience this FREE exhibit and reception honoring the artists and the cause.

The Florida Lake Management Society is currently seeking nominees for its annual awards. The awards are given during the annual symposium in June . Who do you know in your network that is deserving of recognition? The nominee does not need to be a member of FLMS.

The Marjorie Carr Award - is the Society's highest award and is given for life time work on behalf of Florida's aquatic resources. This award is named in honor of Marjorie Carr who, among other things, organized citizens and brought to an end the proposed Cross Florida Barge Canal.

The Edward Deevey, Jr. Award - is given to an individual for contributing to our scientific understanding of Florida's water bodies. Edward Deevey was an internationally recognized limnologist and affiliated with the State Museum of Florida at the time of his death.

The Scott Driver Award - is given to an environmental advocate who has promoted the restoration, protection and/or appreciation of Florida's aquatic resources. Scott was a well know activist on behalf of Lake Okeechobee and a member of the steering committee that founded FLMS at the time of his death.

The Richard Coleman Aquatic Resources Award - is given to a professional who has worked to restore, protect and/or advance our understanding of Florida's aquatic resources.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Award - is given to individuals in the media who report on aquatic resource issues. This award is named in honor of Marjory Stoneman Douglas who authored the book "Everglades: River of Grass", founded the Friends of the Everglades and who has been environmentally active in south Florida.

The Bob Graham Award - is given to persons elected to office who demonstrate a commitment to lake and aquatic resource conservation. Bob Graham is remembered for his support of many environmental initiatives including the purchase for preservation of thousands of acres of Gulf Coast wetlands.

I was just eating a yummy soup made from last night's corned beef and cabbage leftovers. It ga ve me an idea for a new kind of cabbage roll, a corned beef cabbage roll. I mean, what goes better than corned beef and cabbage, right? DW can't eat cooked cabbage. It cause her some digestive stress. Otherwise, this would be for supper tonight. Here's how I envision the recipe:

1 lb. leftover corned beef, cubed cabbage leaves, seperated (can be already cooked) sliced onion 2 cups cooked rice butter AP flour 2 cups braising liquid from the cooked corned beef.

Preheat your oven to 350 F. Heat the butter in a skillet, then add the cabbage leaves. Cover and cook until the cabbage is softened. When the cabbage leaves are soft, remove them from the pan and lay them out on parchment paper. Add a tbs. or two of rice on top of each leaf, followed by a generous portion of corned beef and sliced onion. Roll. Place the cabbage rolls into a rectangular baking pan, cover with foil, and place into the oven. Bake for 40 minutes.

20 minutes before the corned beef is done, melt 2 tbs. butter in you skillet. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add 2 tbs. flour to the melted butter and cook until blonde. Whisk in the broth until a smooth sauce (veloute) is formed. Pour this over the cabbage rolls and place back into the oven for ten more minutes. Serve.

DOE Report: Wind Energy Could Supply One-Third Of Power In US By 2050. The AP (3/13, Martin) reports that a new study by the Energy Department has determined that “wind power will be cheaper than electricity generated by natural gas within a decade, even without a federal tax incentive.” Wind energy being increased “to 35 percent of US electricity supplies by 2050 will cause national power prices to decline 2.2 percent and result in $400 billion in benefits related to reduced emissions of greenhouse gases.” Improvements in technology and cost reductions “will reduce the price of wind power to below that of fossil-fuel generation, even after a $23 per megawatt-hour subsidy provided now to wind farm owners ends, according to a report released Thursday.”

152 Canada Moving Faster Than US In Mandating Tougher Oil Tank Car Standards. Roll Call (3/13) reports that as railroads, oil shippers, and local officials across the US wait for Federal officials to issue new safety rules on oil tank cars, the “Canadian government has moved to issue its own rules, which may prefigure what’s coming” in the US. The proposed standards from Canadian regulatory agency Transport Canada require a tank car shell thickness of 9/16th of an inch. Older tank cars now in service have a shell thickness of 7/16 of an inch. The article notes that lawmakers in Congress have “complained about the slowness of the Obama administration rulemaking process on oil tank car safety.” According to the article, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx “said the proposed rule is now out of” the DOT’s “hands and being scrutinized by officials at the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.” The Daily Kos (3/12) reports that Canada is moving faster than the US in requiring stricter standards for oil tank cars. The article notes that the DOT has “predicted an average of 10 derailments” annually for the next 10 years. In light of this, there has been a “push from safety advocates and DOT” to lower “urban speeds for oil trains,” equip trains with “electronically controlled brakes that stop all rail cars simultaneously instead of sequentially and upgrade tank cars,” according to the article. However, the report adds that the industry is resisting calls to implement these safety measures.

Senators Introduce Alternative Reform Of Toxic Substance Control Act. The Hill (3/13, Wheeler) reports that after being “displeased with legislation introduced earlier this week,” Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Ed Markey (D-MA) introduced the Alan Reinstein and Trevor Schaefer Toxic Chemical Protection Act on Thursday, which requires the EPA to “act quickly to consider a ban on asbestos and maintains states’ rights to protect people from dangerous toxic chemicals.” According to the Huffington Post (3/13, Sheppard), the bill speeds up EPA’s process to review chemicals and forces the agency “to review all chemicals already on the market.” The article notes that Boxer “accused” the rival legislation’s sponsors of “being overly deferential to the interests of the chemical industry,” saying that “our citizens deserve nothing less than a bill that protects them – not chemical companies.”

California Proposes Computer And Monitor Efficiency Standards. The Sacramento (CA) Bee (3/13, Glover) reports that the California Energy Commission proposed energy efficiency standards for computers and monitors on Thursday which they estimate will save 2,702 gigawatt hours per year, with customer cost savings of $430 million annually. Standards vary by equipment type and would take effect January 2018.

USA Today Calls For End Of Ethanol Mandate. In an editorial, USA Today (3/13) criticizes the potential GOP presidential candidates who appeared at Iowa’s Ag Summit this week, saying they “to declare fealty to the so-called Renewable Fuel Standard,” which the editorial says mandates drivers’ use of ethanol “even though they don’t want it and it makes no practical sense.” USA Today examines how falling oil prices and greater auto efficiency “make the mandate’s demands laughable,” while consumers suffer financially from higher gas prices. “Just end the mandate — notwithstanding the kowtowing of politicians traipsing through Iowa,” the editorial concludes. Industry Executive Defends RFS. In an opposing view, Renewable Fuels Association president and CEO Bob Dinneen writes in USA Today (3/13) that the Renewable Fuel Standard has increased the use of renewable fuel and agricultural value while reducing imported petroleum and greenhouse emissions from transportation. Dinneen writes that opposition to the RFS is driven by the oil and food industry’s discontent at losing profitability, and that “If we are to ever realize the promise of the RFS, we must allow it to continue.”

Senate Confirms Hart As NTSB Chairman. Several news sources, including the AP, report that the Senate unanimously confirmed Christopher Hart as the Chairman of the NTSB. Reports note that Hart has been serving as the agency’s acting head since Deborah Hersman resigned as the chairman in April 2014. Coverage has focused on Hart’s professional experience and background. For its part, the AP (3/13) reports that Hart is an attorney “with a history in aviation and transportation safety.” The article notes that Hart joined the board in 2009 as vice chairman. It adds that he has “held high-level posts” in the FAA and served as a deputy administrator of the NHTSA. In another article about Hart’s confirmation, the AP (3/13) reports that the Senate also approved the nomination of Tho “Bella” Dinh- Zarr “to fill a vacancy on the safety board.” Hart is also quoted in the piece as saying Thursday, “I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this extraordinary organization whose mission is so important and commendable.”

Fiber Optic System Will Link University Of Texas System To SpaceX. Wants The McAllen (TX) Monitor (3/12, Perez-Treviño) reports that the University of Texas System is looking for proposals “for a fiber optic infrastructure project” to connect Brownsville facilities to those in “Boca Chica and to the nearby site of SpaceX’s control center and to the rocket-launch pad.” According to the article, this is the first infrastructure project linking SpaceX to the university.

ORNL “Working On” All-Solid Lithium-Sulfur Battery. In a story about Tesla batteries, the Toronto (CAN) Globe and Mail (3/13) reported Oak Ridge National Laboratory “has also been working on an all-solid lithium-sulfur variation.”

Education

Survey: US Millenials Fail To See Value Of STEM Subjects. The Computer Business Review (3/13) reports that a recent survey showed that only 75 percent US millennials between the ages of 18 to 34-year-olds think the teaching of STEM subjects in primary or secondary school “is relevant,” while 88 percent of US baby boomers between 51 and 69-years-old “still believe it is important to teach these topics.” The article also notes that 42 percent of US millenials and 46 percent of baby boomers “considered engineering the least important subject to be studied.”

Lockheed Martin Proposes New Jupiter Spacecraft For NASA Cargo Missions. The Denver Business Journal (3/12, Avery, Subscription Publication) “TechFlash” blog reported that Lockheed Martin Space Systems (LMSS) revealed that it will construct “a new Jupiter spacecraft adapted from designs of interplanetary space probes the company has built for NASA.” Lockheed would like NASA to select the Jupiter spacecraft, with its new “Exoliner” cargo-carrying module, for its next round of ISS cargo resupply contracts. Once launched, Jupiter would stay in space to “connect future Exoliner containers launched to the ISS...launch small satellites for NASA or private companies, or...conduct Earth observation for science.” Because the “avionics, power and other features” located on the Jupiter would not need launching with each cargo mission, the company claims that its proposal was “more capable and cost effective for NASA.” According to the article, LMSS also considered Jupiter to be the beginning piece of a deep space architecture because “without modification,” Jupiter could be used with Orion and Space Launch System.

New Horizons Spacecraft Sets Record With Course Correction. SPACE (3/12, Wall) reported that on Tuesday, the New Horizons spacecraft made “a record-setting maneuver to adjust its approach to Pluto.” New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern noted that never before has a spacecraft made a course correction at such a distance from Earth.

Roads and Highways

New Efforts To Bring High Speed Rail to America. CBS News (3/12) reports that “highspeed rail has a had a difficult time catching on,” as the White House “unveiled its vision for new train corridors in 2009, but so far, there has been little progress.” Jeff Pegues reports that the developers behind high speed rail projects believe it is gaining ground and that projects are promised in Texas and California within years. The piece does report, however, that those projects do face opposition from those who believe the projects are not financially viable.

Energy

Plunging Crude Prices Could Hurt LNG Projects. The Houston Chronicle (3/11, Grattan) reported, “Cheaper international crude will pose a significant challenge to US liquefied natural gas export projects, according to an analysis by PwC.” A $50-a-barrel global oil benchmark is required for export projects to make sense

154 financially, and $60 per barrel is required in order for these projects to be comfortable, according to Svetlana Valonis, a director in the firm’s energy advisory practice. But some projects may not be viable at $50. “As US natural gas production surged and its price fell in recent years, several companies proposed and a few started building plants to chill gas into a liquid for transport on tankers to overseas markets, where the fuel sometimes cost much more than in the US,” the Chronicle reports. Crude prices should rebound in 2017 and 2018, analysts say, but that may not be enough to motivate investors to bet on LNG, Valonis said.

DOE Examining Need For An Emergency Stockpile Of Transformers To Power The Grid. EnergyWire (3/13, Subscription Publication) reports the Energy Department “has begun an inquiry into the vulnerability of large power transformers that are crucial to U.S. electricity delivery, officials confirm” and it “could lead to a strategy for expanding a strategic stockpile of spare transformers.” The Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability project “addresses potentially existential threats to the interstate high-voltage transmission network that have been highlighted in government studies as far back as 1990, and increasingly since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.” A DOE official said, “The question, as we frame it here, is what the risk is to transformers, and to the overall system, from a loss of transformers, and [what are] appropriate measures to mitigate that risk.” EnergyWire notes, “The threat to the grid was highlighted by five senators who wrote in December 2014 to Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, urging DOE to support a larger stockpile of large transformers.”
