11-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in IN TRO Missouri and Kansas, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 20 years, the league has undergone several changes, highlighted by increased par- ticipation in national championships. Jim Johnson

The MIAA has gained the reputation of P LA MIAA Commissioner being one of the top NCAA Division II con- Y E RS ferences in the nation. MIAA student-athletes have won 13 national team championships and more than 100 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts conference championships in eight men’s and eight wom- C O en’s sports. Men’s championships include football, ACHE S cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, baseball, tennis, and golf. Women’s champions are deter- Larry House mined in volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, softball and tennis. Assistant Commissioner for MIAA Commissioner Jim Johnson succeeded Ralph McFillen on July 1, 2007. Johnson spent two Championships and OPPO NEN TS seasons as athletic director at Texas A&M-Commerce before becoming the MIAA’s third full-time Business Development commissioner. Johnson spent nearly two years (2003-05) at what is now the University of Central Missouri as asso- ciate athletics director for development. While in Warrensburg, he also served as the institution’s gov- ernment relations director. Like his predecessor, Johnson has experience in the NCAA national office. He was in membership services from 1997-02, working as membership coordinator and Division II governance liaison. McFillen, formerly of the Metro and Gulf South conferences, succeeded Ken B. Jones as commis- R E V IE W sioner of the MIAA in July 1997. Matt Newbery, previously the assistant sports information director at Natasha Oakes Pittsburg State University, is assistant to the commissioner for media relations and in his 14th year with the MIAA. Natasha Oakes, a former All-MIAA track performer at Emporia State University, was added Assistant Commissioner for as the third full-time staffer in July 2005 as assistant to the commissioner for compliance. Larry House Compliance/SWA joined the conference office in 2007 spearheading the MIAA’s marketing efforts.
