  • Building a Movement in the Non-Profit Industrial Complex
Building A Movement In The Non-Profit Industrial Complex Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Michelle Oyakawa Graduate Program in Sociology The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Korie Edwards, Advisor Andrew Martin Steve Lopez Copyrighted by Michelle Mariko Oyakawa 2017 Abstract Today, democracy in the United States is facing a major challenge: Wealthy elites have immense power to influence election outcomes and policy decisions, while the political participation of low-income people and racial minorities remains relatively low. In this context, non-profit social movement organizations are one of the key vehicles through which ordinary people can exercise influence in our political system and pressure elite decision-makers to take action on matters of concern to ordinary citizens. A crucial fact about social movement organizations is that they often receive significant financial support from elites through philanthropic foundations. However, there is no research that details exactly how non-profit social movement organizations gain resources from elites or that analyzes how relationships with elite donors impact grassroots organizations’ efforts to mobilize people to fight for racial and economic justice. My dissertation aims to fill that gap. It is an ethnographic case study of a multiracial statewide organization called the Ohio Organizing Collaborative (OOC) that coordinates progressive social movement organizations in Ohio. Member organizations work on a variety of issues, including ending mass incarceration, environmental justice, improving access to early childhood education, and raising the minimum wage. In 2016, the OOC registered over 155,000 people to vote in Ohio.

  • Dynamics of Competition in Two-Sided Markets with Differentiated Products: a Case Study of the Radio Industry Following the Primedia/New Africa Investment Ltd Merger
Work in progress, not for citation purposes Dynamics of competition in two-sided markets with differentiated products: A case study of the radio industry following the Primedia/New Africa Investment Ltd merger Rantao Itumeleng1 Abstract The decision by the Competition Tribunal to unconditionally approve the Primedia/New Africa Investment Limited merger case (NAIL) is the subject of this paper. This study conducts an impact assessment of the Primedia/NAIL case. It does so using market definition as the first step in the assessment of competition in the Gauteng commercial radio industry. In markets with two different groups of customers, repositioning is fundamental in the assessment of anticompetitive effects post-merger. Utilizing tools identified in literature and international cases, the study adopts an ex post approach to assess competition in the Gauteng commercial radio industry. Findings indicate that in mergers that do not lead to join control, merging firms’ stations reposition away. Highveld and Kaya repositioned away from each other post-merger. Because of this dynamic nature of radio as well as the structure of the market in Gauteng, no effective competitors to Kaya and Highveld in the relevant market, Highveld and Kaya’s prices rose faster than other radio stations’ prices post-merger. At an industry level, competition also deteriorated post-merger as prices rose significantly mainly because of few sales house. These findings imply that the initial decision by the Competition Tribunal to approve the merger unconditionally may be incorrect. Keywords: Unilateral effects, coordinated effects, Repositioning, Partial acquisition 1. Introduction Prior to 1978, radio was the leading electronic medium in South Africa before being surpassed by television (Competition Commission, 2006:1).

Briefing No. 01 Korea Focus One election, two winners South Korea‘s parliamentary elections marked by success in the fight against the corona pandemic Dr. Eric J. Ballbach* KDI School-FU Korea-Europe Programme Institute of Korean Studies Freie Univesität Berlin 2020 The parliamentary elections in South Korea on 15 April were the first nationwide democratic elections since the outbreak of the corona pandemic. The fact that these elections could be and were held at all is directly related to the strategy that the South Korean government is pursuing to contain the pandemic. The clear winner was the incumbent President Moon Jae-in, who was rewarded in particular for his successful crisis management. But the election is also a victory for the still comparatively young democracy in South Korea. Since the government and the population have learned from the experience of previous epidemics, citizens have not had to choose between exercising their democratic rights and protecting their health.

  • The Dominant Party System: Challenges for South Africa's
VOLUME 3 NO 2 121 THE DOMINANT-PARTY SYSTEM Challenges for South Africa’s Second Decade of Democracy By Heidi Brooks Heidi Brooks wrote this paper as a research assistant in the Research, Publications and Information Department at EISA. She is now currently undertaking an MA in Political Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The existence of a dominant-party system in South Africa has raised growing concerns over its implications for the consolidation of democracy. This paper argues that while there appears to be no real threat to democracy in South Africa it does face several challenges, and successful democratic consolidation will depend upon alertness to signs of undemocratic practices associated with dominant-party systems. It is crucial to ensure that government remains accountable to its citizens. The ANC has demonstrated commitment to democratic principles and there remains sufficient debate and activism within society to keep a check on authoritarian tendencies. However, South African politics is characterised by weak opposition parties that continue to be associated with racial identity and hold little credibility amongst the electorate. South Africans also continue to vote in racial blocs, and the existence of a dominant party and a weak opposition has resulted in emerging voter apathy and withdrawal amongst some sections of the electorate. If the opposition is to fulfil its role in safeguarding accountability and democratic practice it must regain credibility and break away from racial politics to appeal to the African community. Civil society’s role in ensuring government accountability is also pivotal, particularly in the absence of a strong political opposition.

  • A History of the Progressive Federal Party, 1981 - 1989
STRUCTURAL CRISIS AND LIBERALISM: A HISTORY OF THE PROGRESSIVE FEDERAL PARTY, 1981 - 1989 DAVID SHANDLER Dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Economic History, Faculty of Arts, University of Cape Town, January 1991 The copyright of this thesis vests in the author. It is the aim of this dissertation to attempt to address an aspect of this lacuna by focussing on the Progressive Federal Party's responses from 1981 until 1989. The thesis develops an understanding of the period as one entailing conditions of organ.le crisis. It attempts to show the PFP' s behaviour in the context of structural and conjunctural crises. The thesis periodises the Party's policy and strategic responses and makes an effort to show its contradictory nature. An effort is made to understand this contradictory character in terms of the party's class location with respect to the white dominating classes and leading elements within it; in relation to the black dominated classes; as well as in terms of the liberal tradition within which the Party operated.
