Metro area students from Cold Harbor Elementary School recently had a day of cooking at Young Chefs Academy, a local, “cooking school just right for kids.” The students made cheesy breadsticks and were involved in the process from beginning to end. This involved measuring flour, yeast, salt and other ingredients like eggs, which they also cracked and whisked. The process also involved mixing the ingredients together to create dough; kneading the dough to become a soft, supple product; brushing the strips of dough with eggs, sprinkling cheese and watching their creations bake in the oven. The students got to enjoy the final product with most of them declaring that it was “yummy” while others declared how they would make the breadsticks at home for their parents. She was homeless, she had lost custody of one of her children, and above all, she was battling mental illness. At her emotional peak, she needed an escape. When a twist of fate elicited a fond childhood pastime−horseback riding−she finally found the answer to her whirlwind of despair. After utilizing the activity as outlet to curb her problems, she went on to break barriers in the process.
