Biding My Time Good afternoon. My name is Björgvin Rúnar Leifsson and this is an episode about Pink Floyd. The song we heard in the beginning is called "Biding My Time". Roger Waters wrote it in 1969 but it did not appear on an album until the compilation album "Relics", which was released in May 1971 and contained various songs from 1967- 69. The song is a characteristic Waters' ballad as they were during these years but it also has some bluesy tint. But let's turn to Pink Floyd's composition in 1971. They went into the studio early this year with all sorts of ideas but had a hard time bringing them together. Among the things they tried was that each of them recorded their own channel around a certain basic theme regardless of what the others were doing. Furthermore, they continued experimenting with all sorts of effects and synthesizers and they were actually among the very first bands to use the famous Moog synthesizer. Also, they were not afraid to try all kinds of sounds, both from nature and man- made environment. It's enough to mention the bird sounds on "Grantchester Meadows" on "Ummagumma" and diverse kitchen sounds in "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" on "Atom Heart Mother". In fact, after "Dark Side of the Moon" was released, they had an idea for an album, which would be exclusively kitchen sounds, such as plates, glasses and cutlery, but they gave up on the idea although they actually took advantage of some parts of these experiments on some albums later, such as "Wish You Were Here".

This Species is Amusing Itself to Death. The Addictive Contaminated Media Reality The Diagnosis for the Future Inhabitants of our Dying Planet By Dr. Gary G. Kohls Theme: Culture, Society Global Research, August 01, 2018 30 July 2018 “And when they found our shadows (grouped ‘round the TV sets), they ran down every lead; they repeated every test; they checked out all the data in their lists. And then the alien anthropologists admitted they were still perplexed, but on eliminating every other reason for our sad demise they logged the only explanation left: This species has amused itself to death.” – Roger Waters “Apathy and indifference are nurtured in the modern age as most peoples’ free time is frittered away with worthless trivia like ball games, computer games, movies and soaps, and fiddling with their mobile phones. These distractions might be fun, but after most of them you’ve learnt nothing of any value, and remain ignorant, malleable and suggestible, which is just how the elites want you.” – Clive Maund “A truth’s initial commotion is directly proportional to how deeply the lie was believed… When a well-packaged web of lies has been sold gradually to the masses over generations, the truth will seem utterly preposterous and its speaker, a raving lunatic.” – Dresden James “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.” – Winston Churchill *** 30 years ago (1985) Neil Postman (a professor of communications arts and sciences at New York University – until his death in 2003) wrote the best-selling book “Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business”.

  • Pink Floyd, Polar Music Prize Laureate 2008 Pink Floyd Are One
Pink Floyd, Polar Music Prize Laureate 2008 Pink Floyd are one of the most successful and influential rock groups in history. In the 1960s, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright met and started playing music while studying at London’s Regent Street Polytechnic. They became a foursome with the addition of Syd Barrett, a friend of Roger Waters’ from Cambridge, who suggested the name Pink Floyd, derived from US bluesmen Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. Throughout 1966 Pink Floyd became the pre-eminent ‘underground’ band, signing to EMI Records in 1967. Their first two singles Arnold Layne and See Emily Play hit the charts and their debut album The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is considered to be one of the greatest British psychedelic albums. It entered the UK Top Ten, as did every subsequent Pink Floyd studio album. Syd Barrett had composed the bulk of the band’s recorded material, but his behavior became more erratic to the point that the band decided to add a second guitarist and singer for live performances: David Gilmour, another Cambridge friend. The 5-man Floyd experiment didn’t really work and Syd and Floyd parted company in 1968, although Syd recorded two highly influential solo albums, assisted by Floyd members, before his retirement from the music world. Pink Floyd developed a new musical style, based around the members’ compositional and improvisational talents, building a large audience via many live tours, and releasing a succession of hit albums: A Saucerful Of Secrets, the film soundtrack More, Ummagumma, their first UK No.

file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/OWNER/Desktop/humo%20interview.txt 'THEY OFFERED US 150 MILLION DOLLAR FOR A WORLD TOUR. BUT I'M NOT IN THE MOOD' WHERE ARE THEY NOW... ROGER WATERS (PINK FLOYD) On 2 July, during Live8 in London, Pink Floyd was on stage for the first time after a quarter century quarrel. I stood in Hyde park that memorable day, literally on row one, and saw how Roger Waters hurried to the microphone after each song to thank the public on behalf of the complete group, and how Nick Mason looked at him each time ('o god, Roger needs to say something'). Also backstage the new peace was very moving: as if Osama Bin Laden and George Bush had suddenly decided there was a higher aim than Allah or God, although they didn't publicly admit it. But the music sounded more majestic then ever: the Floyd even beat U2 as best live act of the day. Pink Floyd has sold more than hundred millions records, and their influence rings through the top bands of each generation: The Orb, Suede, Radiohead, and all good lounge... During the top days of punk and grunge it was not done to like the Pink Floyd dinosaur, but Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, who posed in a I Hate Pink Floyd t-shirt, later confessed to be a fan and also Kurt Cobain had a copy of Dark Side or the Moon at home. Thirteen years after 'Amused to Death ' you would expect that Roger Waters would make a pop record, but his new double cd 'Ca Ira' is an opera about the French revolution - première: 17 November in Rome.

THE CONCEPT ALBUMS OF ROGER WATERS AND PINK FLOYD WHICH ONE'S PINK? TOWARDS AN ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPT ALBUMS OF ROGER WATERS AND PINK FLOYD By PHILIP ANTHONY ROSE, B.A., B.Ed. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies inJ Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts McMaster University © Copyright by Philip Anthony Rose, April 1995 MASTER OF ARTS (1995) McMASTER UNIVERSITY (Music Criticism) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: Which One's Pink? - Towards an Analysis of the Concept Albums of Roger Waters and Pink Floyd AUTHOR: Philip Anthony Rose, B.A. (McMaster University) B.Ed. (Brock University) SUPERVISORS: Dr. S. Fast and Dr. H.J. Ferns NUMBER OF PAGES: vii, 132 ABSTRACT The introduction to this project surveys a number of recent approaches to the study of music, which are utilized in the subsequent analysis of the concept albums of Roger Waters and Pink Floyd. The concept album is a genre in which the texts and music of an entire record album are thematically and conceptually linked. The thesis employs techniques of liiterary criticism in its analysis of song lyrics, and provides an hermeneutic analysis of the music in order to investigate how the sounds influence, and contribute to, the overall meanings of the works. Chapter 1 focuses on The Dark Side o/the Moon (1973), while Chapters 2 and 3 focus respectively on Wish You Were Here (1975) and Animals (1977). The project illustrates how Roger Waters combines all of the pieces appearing on an individual album in order to communicate the recording's overriding concerns.
