    The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art A History By, Karen Towers Klacsmann CHAPTER 1 Establishment of the Gertrude Herbert Memorial Institute of Art and its relation to the Augusta Art Club On October 13, 1932, Miss Louisa Mustin and a dozen of her friends gathered at her home. Little did they know that their ambitious plans for the cultural life of the city would grow into the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, a cornerstone in the vibrant arts community of Augusta. Without a permanent home for the arts, Mustin and Miss Julia Johnston co- founded the Augusta Art Club. The group wanted a designated space for art studios, a forum to discuss art, and an exhibition venue. A section of the Old Medical College building, administered by the Sand Hills Garden Club, was available for shared studio space. At first, there was no instructor: the members hired a model and critiqued each other’s work. In addition, they held a series of art appreciation lectures. Membership dues were two dollars per year, a reasonable fee that was affordable to many people in the area who were interested in the fine arts. Members attended art appreciation lectures without an admission charge while non-members were invited but paid fifty cents to attend each lecture. By the second year of operation, the club’s membership roll stood at 60. There were art appreciation lectures every other Monday during a season that lasted from September until May – a period that coincided with the influx of winter visitors who made the area a second home for extended periods of time.

Gustitus Jeremy Toms University of Florida Gainesville, FL 32611 i Executive Summary Despite advances in solid waste management and increased awareness of the negative environmental consequences of pollution, littering is still common in the US. Littering can be the result of carelessness, accidents, or intentional actions, but the effect is the same. In recent years, concerned citizens have increased their attention to litter in the Hillsborough River Watershed (HRW). The University of Florida (UF) research team collaborated with local municipalities and non-government organizations (NGOs) to quantify and map the quantity of collected litter within the HRW. Because much of the storm water within the HRW drains into the Hillsborough River, all of the litter within the watershed has the potential to become aquatic trash (PAT). The PAT that was collected in roadside and park cleanups before it made its way into the Tampa Bay or the Gulf of Mexico (recovered PAT) was cataloged into a database and mapped using ESRI ArcGIS software. Concentrations of recovered PAT were reported as pounds per acre for 1,015 cleanup events at 168 unique sites within the HRW from 2008-2014, shown in Figure E1. Additionally, educational campaigns such as storm drain markings and field visits by the WaterVentures mobile lab were mapped to identify where residents could be expected to have increased awareness of the negative issues associated with littering.

    Southeast Seminole Heights Flooding Relief Project Construction Impacts - Questions and Answers August 2021 When will construction start? When will it end? Construction is scheduled to begin in late September or early October 2021 and will be completed approximately 2.5 years later. What are the construction hours? Will there be night work? Construction will typically occur on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Night and weekend work may be needed on occasion for major road crossings, connections or paving. If night or weekend work is required, crews will provide advance notification to residents to minimize inconvenience. Will construction take place one street at a time or will crews be working on multiple streets simultaneously? Multiple crews will work simultaneously in different locations. Construction will begin first in South Seminole Heights at Crest Avenue and the Hillsborough River, with replacement of the outfall structure at the river and utility relocations along Crest. Micro-tunnel shafts on East Caracas Avenue extending under I-275 will occur at the same time. While crews work at the river and on West Crest Avenue, another crew will begin relocating utilities and installing storm culverts on Central Avenue at East Giddens Avenue, moving south to Caracas. After storm drains are installed from Central to Caracas, crews will begin installing storm drains on Caracas east of I-275. Will Rivercrest and Haya Linear Park be closed due to construction? Rivercrest Park and Haya Linear Park will remain open during construction. Crews will be working on the outfall to the Hillsborough River in a portion of Haya Linear Park; this area will be clearly delineated and barricaded.

    The Seminole Heights Advisor The Official Publication of the Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Association (OSHNA) Published Since 1988 - Our 31st Year “To promote and encourage the preservation and restoration of the area known as Seminole Heights” Annual Circulation 11,000 Spring 2020 www.oldseminoleheights.org From the OSHNA President By Tim Keeports It’s spring in The Heights and that means we were eagerly anticipating our annual Home Tour! With the current COVID-19 situation, we cancelled the 22nd Annual OSHNA Home Tour that was to be held April 5th and are planning for a wonderful home tour on the second Sunday of April 2021 as Easter falls on the first Sunday of April 2021. Occasionally I’m asked why OSHNA exists or why did we take a certain stance on some of the changes happening within our neighborhood – such as a development or road project. Our organization’s bylaws contain a very important section I try to keep in mind when answering: "Section 3 Purpose" states, “to promote and encourage the preservation and restoration of the area known as Seminole Heights while revitalizing a sense of community in a safe and healthy residential neighborhood….” This “Purpose” is important as it sets the tone at our Board meetings and guides our decision making. It also helps frame the issues we focus on and when it’s more appropriate to allow individual neighbors to handle their challenges or occasional differences. Additionally, the OSHNA Board participates in a bimonthly meeting with our neighboring associations to discuss and address our common efforts. Even though March and April 2020 felt like an entire year had gone by, I was reflecting on this past December 2019 when we held our annual holiday party at American Legion Post 111.
