PROGRAM NOTES Johann Sebastian Bach was a multi-faceted musician writing for a number of contexts both sacred and secular, but it was his vocation as a church musician that provided both the opportunity and the inspiration for his greatest work. In the 18th-century, a Lutheran music director ,or Kantor, would have been expected to provide original compositions for choir, organ, and orchestra on a routine basis.
