Daniel Dubois Wins Prestigious Boxing Writers’ Young Boxer of the Year Award for 2019 DANIEL DUBOIS WINS PRESTIGIOUS BOXING WRITERS’ YOUNG BOXER OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR 2019 DANIEL DUBOIS HAS been voted Best Young Boxer of the Year by the members of the Boxing Writers’ Club and becomes the first heavyweight to win the award since Herbie Hide in 1993. British champion Dubois has confirmed his status as the top young heavyweight in world boxing since turning professional in April 2017 and subsequently winning six championship belts in just 12 fights. The 22-year-old will bid to make it seven belts in 13 fights when he takes on Ebenezer Tetteh for the Commonwealth title at the Royal Albert Hall on Friday September 27. He has previously won the WBC Youth, Southern Area, English, WBO European and Global, along with the British title he memorably won by defeating domestic rival Nathan Gorman at the o2 Arena in July. Now recognised as the up and coming force in the division, Dubois is added to a roll of honour where 27 of the former winners have proceeded to become world champions. The Geoffrey Simpson Award for Best Young Boxer of the Year was first presented in 1951, the first recipient being Randolph Turpin, followed by others who went on to become legends of the sport including Terry Downes, Howard Winstone, Ken Buchanan, John H Stracey, John Conteh, Barry McGuigan, Frank Bruno, Nigel Benn, Naseem Hamed, Joe Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton, Amir Khan and George Groves. “I am genuinely thrilled to be voted Best Young Boxer by the Boxing Writers’ Club,” reacted Dubois to the news. “There were many strong contenders for the award and I am honoured that my progress in the sport is commended by the winning of such a prestigious honour. “I know I am following in the footsteps of many, many greats and it is my intention to emulate their achievements. “I will accept the award on behalf of my team because this has been a team effort and I would like to thank Martin and Tony Bowers and everyone at the Peacock Gym, along with my promoter Frank Warren for successfully guiding my career so far.” Hall of Fame promoter Warren always believed he had signed a prospect who would take the heavyweight division by storm: “I have been convinced since day one that we were onto something very special with Daniel and everything he has done up to now has confirmed that belief. “He is an outstanding young talent and a very fine individual who possesses all the ingredients to reach the very top and stay there for a long time. “I am delighted that his enormous potential is being acknowledged by the Boxing Writers’ Club.” Trainer Martin Bowers from the renowned Peacock Gym added: “I am so happy for Daniel and I believe the recognition is richly deserved. Daniel is totally dedicated to his craft and his application to training on a daily basis cannot be faulted. “There is so much more to come and this is just the start of his journey. I would like to congratulate Daniel, along with the coaches at the gym who work quietly in the background without getting the plaudits for their contribution.” Daniel will receive the Geoffrey Simpson Award for Best Young Boxer at the 68th Annual Dinner of the Boxing Writers’ Club, to be held in the magnificent Banqueting Hall of The Savoy Hotel on the evening of Monday 7 October..

It was the only time I ever went 12 rounds and I ran out of steam from the ninth round onwards. I remember the agony and the exhaustion when I was sitting down in the corner between the rounds. With every big attack I made on him, I had to struggle to stay on my feet. After a fight like that, you both earn each other’s respect. I’ve only met Jon once since our fight, so I don’t really know him. But, even before I fought him, he always struck me as a positive person. Sometimes, I imagine how it would be if I were to simply bump into him in the street, because he’s a nice guy and I’d just like to shake his hand.’ Dave Stewart OOKS take a long time to write. • Analysis of Male Boxers' Nicknames

Nicknaming of individual athletes and sports teams is a multifaceted phenomenon the analysis of which reveals numerous reasons for choosing a particular name or nickname. The practice of nicknaming has become so embedded in the concept of sport that it requires exceptional attention by those who create these labels. The goal of this research was to analyse the semantic structure of boxers’ nicknames, i.e. the possible principles of their formation. To realize the research aims 378 male boxers’ nicknames, predominantly in the English language, were collected. The nicknames were allocated to semantic categories according to the content area or areas they referred to. Counts and percentages were calculated for the nicknames in each subsample created with regard to the number of semantic categories used to create a boxer’s nickname and for the group of nicknames allocated to the miscellaneous group. Counts were calculated for all groups within each subsample. Key words: hero, association, figurative language, figures of speech 1. INTRODUCTION Are nicknames only arbitrary formations of little account or are they coinages contrived meticulously and with a lot of prowess? Skipper (1989, 103) alleges that nicknames “often serve as a miniature character sketch”. When discussing nicknames in baseball, Gmelch (2006, 129) elucidates that sobriquets frequently communicate something about the players using them, e.g.

Amir Khan Adapted from http://worldcelebsbiography.blogspot.com/2011/04/world‐light‐welterweight‐boxing.html Name _________________ Date __________ Amir Khan was born in Bolton in early December 1986. He showed early promise as a boxer, and in 2003 he won a gold medal at the AAU Junior Olympic Games, closely followed by another gold medal at the European Student Championship in 2004. This early interest was encouraged by his father Shah Khan, who considered his son a born fighter and was confident that his son could be very successful at his chosen sport. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Khan won a silver medal at the age of 17. Khan won the WBA World Light-Welterweight World Championship title, defeating Andreas Kotelnik in a unanimous decision over 12 rounds in July 2009. He is also the former Commonwealth lightweight champion, WBO Inter-Continental lightweight champion, and WBA International lightweight champion. Background Khan spent his early years supporting his local soccer team, Bolton Wanderers whilst attending Smithills school. This early support has since been repaid by the club who have allowed Khan to use their training facilities. Amir's parents hail from the Punjab province of Pakistan, Rawalpindi and as a result he can speak Urdu and Panjabi in addition to his native English. He has a younger brother Haroon Khan who is also an amateur boxer; and his first cousin, Sajid Mahmood is an English cricketer. Amateur The early amateur career of Khan was distinguished and at the age of 17 he won an Olympic Silver Medal from the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
