Ethan Phillips, Angus Styles and Will Sutherland were all named in the initial squad. Congratulations boys!

SMJFL & Sandringham Dragons

One of the league innovations in 2011 was the merging of the SMJFL Vic Metro Championship squads with the junior development squads of the Sandringham Dragons. The Dragons are one of 14 elite junior clubs that field a team in the TAC Cup U18 competition, that includes clubs from all over Victoria plus a team from Tasmania and Queensland. The TAC Cup competition is the major feeder competition for the AFL Draft.

The merging of the interleague with the Dragons development squads means that not only do representative players get to compete in the Victorian Metro Championships at U14 & U15 level, but they are also under the watchful eye of the Dragons staff which helps prepare them from a football and relationship point of view.

We are delighted to announce that we have had 6 players chosen to compete in the Victorian Metro Championships. The SMJFL field a team in both division 1 & division 2 of the championships. Our chosen players are:

U14 U15

Sam Ralph (Division 1) George Manton (Division 1) Xavier Jordan (Division 2) Darcy Levin (Division 2) Tom Soust (Division 2) Harry Crowe (Division 2)

Sam Dorevitch and Michael Batten (U14) are also training with Sandringham Dragons development squad. Our last year premiership winners and this year’s U16’s have proven the old adage that individual success comes through team success. This year, there are a staggering 11 boys training with the Sandy Dragon U16 development squad. Some boys have played carnival games and been in the training squad, while others have just been in the training squad. These representatives are:

Game & Squad Training squad

Ed Vickers-Willis Will Paine Ed Langdon Charlie Smith Ed Cheesman Lachie Horne Corey Bruinstroop Mitchell Horne Connor Lappin Robbie Bergin Harry Stevens

On top of this, Blake Fletcher has been part of the Oakleigh Chargers development squad. Oakleigh Chargers are another TAC Cup team. Families living on the northern side of Gardiners Creek are zoned to Oakleigh, while those on the south are zoned to Sandringham.

A successful representation year for EMJFC! EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

MATCH REPORTS Youth Girls

East Malvern girls suffered their second loss of the season last Saturday, beaten by a better- organised and well-drilled Kew Rovers at Stanley Grose Oval.

The Knights, coming off a tremendous win the previous week, were perhaps a little complacent, and against a disciplined team with plenty of size, strength and talent, paid the penalty in their 28-point loss.

The visitors booted two early goals to seize the initiative, and East Malvern found it tough to match their run and work rate, though again the defensive qualities which have served the girls so well all season were in evidence, Mikaela and Elyce laying some strong tackles, and Tilly, after a couple of weeks on the sidelines, making her presence felt.

Mikaela worked hard to inspire the girls with her second efforts, and Mia and Andrea chimed in with some strong tackles as well, but the first term yielded only one behind to Kew’s 2.2.

The ledger was evened somewhat in the second quarter, Holly outstanding again in defence, Mimi launching some fine runs, Sarah smothering brilliantly and Alana pumping the ball into attack with her prodigious kicking.

Elyce found Harper, who posted the Knights’ first goal of the game, and had a hand in the second as well, to Mia, as Holly continued to hold back the tide in defence, and little Kate guarded her opponents closely, Kew’s free players starting to prove a real headache for an overworked backline.

Andrea continued to try her heart out in defence, shrugging off an accidental knee to the face which forced her temporarily from the field with a bloody nose, but from which she soon returned.

East Malvern was still in touch at half-time, but Kew, which added three goals of its own, led by 20 points at the long break, the Knights too loose and unaccountable, which against a team of this experience, was always going to prove costly.

The third term was to prove the back-breaker. Against what had become a handy breeze, the Knights couldn’t add to their score while Kew kicked 3.2 to go into the last change with a match- winning 40-point lead.

Mikaela and Mia were doing everything they could to lift their teammates, while Dani showed plenty of agility in the ruck contests, Kaytie also tackling well.

The Knights, to their credit, never gave up, and that spirit, with the breeze at their backs, was rewarded in a three-goal final term, outscoring the visitors and closing the final margin.

Andrea, Elyce and Amber laid some strong tackles, Mikaela breaking the goal drought. With some strong shepherding and running to support, the Knights began to play the brand of football they desired. EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

MATCH REPORTS

Another booming kick from Alana saw Mikaela goal again, and Mikaela then set up the Knights’ final goal of the game to Mia, the Knights taking heart from a good finish, but also taught a valuable lesson in the hard work and run required to compete for four quarters.

MATCH REPORTS U11 Blues

It’s all about being hard and tough.

With this mantra in mind our wet-weather expert Captain Arnie wins the toss and the mighty Knights are kicking to the southern end. Excellent! There is no wet weather but there is the advantage of winning the toss.

1st Quarter Ormond 1 6 12 Knights 0 0 0

Captain Arnie sets the tone for the match with a strong fierce at the first bounce but is unrewarded with Ormond taking the ball away into their forward line. Jono in defense is an impenetrable wall and takes a brilliant mark at the last line to save a certain goal. His heroic efforts are to be repeated 3 times! Now that’s hard and tough! Meanwhile the crowd is at ready, assembled and waiting to see Kizzle lay one of his legendary tackles on the tallest player of the opposition. Will it happen? Of course it will! Halfway through the quarter Kizzle adds to his folklore status and the crowd roar is reminiscent of the best of them at The G. Adding to the game’s tenacity, Morls runs along the wing taking on half the opposition. Hard. And. Tough.

2nd Quarter Ormond 3 8 26 Knights 1 3 9

Coach Mike demands more hard, tough and scrappy football. Its all about the tackling, shepherding and bumping.

Ham & Sco combine to lay a double tackle. Coach’s message seems to have worked at this early stage. Great tackling by Big V and defensive work by our forwards keeps the ball in the forward line. OJ squeezed for space along the boundary picks up the ball, spins around and kicks an amazing goal from the boundary. Anyone catch that on camera? Jono still taking marks in defence. This guy is everywhere! Arrow is fighting hard to maintain possession in the forward line and get some scoreboard pressure happening, but unfortunately goals are still eluding the fighting Knights.

3rd Quarter Ormond 4 11 35 Knights 1 3 9 EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

MATCH REPORTS

Knights pumped up to get the runs on the board in this premiership quarter. Arnie gets proceedings underway, marking the ball and unleashing a monster kick to the forward line. OJ still pulling down marks in the defensive 50 and Ham is clearly relishing playing in the middle. Not only playing, but dominating. Our newest recruit Chili is also settling in nicely and getting noticed with numerous runs along the wing. Razza is repelling attack after attack from Ormond. Kizzle lays another great tackle freeing the ball. “Who wants it next?”, screams Coach Mike. It’s Macca! He runs past, swoops on the ball, a quick give to Sco who lets rip with another prodigious kick to the forward line. Knights still on 9.

4th Quarter Ormond 5 11 41 Knights 2 5 17

‘Bring it home strong!’ was the message at the break. Following instructions, Ham lays a ripping tackle, follows up with a second effort and then goes in for another go! Shorty brings down a player twice his size; no fear. Belsy’s taking marks in the forward 50. You can feel something special is about to happen. Ham flies in for another tackle, freeing the ball for Arnie who ingeniously snaps for a magnificent goal on the siren. No win, but a good strong finish for the knights after a hard, tough game. EAST MALVERN WHITES Ull's v MURRUMBEENA GOLD

Upon arrival at the ground it was apparent that the boys had come to play. Track suits off, hoodies strewn and plenty of warm up talk happening between deadly accurate handball drills. Even the coaching panel seemed a little taller this week.

Equally obvious was that Captain Hamo was here to lead his troops into battle, with that familiar Bowen air of confident professionalism. Coach Carrazzo immediately let the boys know that expectations were high with the opening comment of "Maybe a bit of percentage here boys" With drills done and warm up complete, all we needed was Hamo to choose the match ball. In the meantime, an umpire volunteer was called for and Phillip "Bill Deller" Rosier stepped up to the plate, straightened his bung knee and whacked a whistle in his gob and headed to the centre. Edwina, in the meantime, got it all sorted off the field.

Murrumbeena won the toss and kicked with the aid of a 4 goal breeze.

1st QUARTER

It was clear from the start that it was going to an arm wrestle with the Murrumbeena boys determined to impose themselves on the contest. With Halsey giving us first use of the ball and Caratz showing a clean pair of heels with his clearance work. Halsey showed time and time again why mobile ruckman are so good with his follow up work in the centre. AB was ruck roving a treat. Time and time again Murrumbeena repelled our attacks and held out as long as they could but how can you hold out with Meysta going in hard with a look of 'get out the way it's mine', Captain Hamo putting on a kicking display with "Bob Murrayesque" drop punts and seeming like he has all the time in the world.

Mahons was occasionally popping up from the bottom of a pack to clear the ball to Caratz and others. Rusty stopping the forward surges of Murrumbeena and it was tight. Riffa, against the run of play, created a goal via Meysta and we were away.

Stevo cleared the ball and repelled another Murrumbeena attack. The tackling was fierce and it was on, with Riffa and Stevo fighting for the ball and Coona doing his best Tony Shaw work in the packs. Mahons took a great mark and kicked it to Rozo, who goaled.

With the Whites starting to win the clearances and hand ball, Riffa scored another goal, the siren sounded and the coach was pleased. The Knights were on top.

SCORE: EAST MALVERN 3.2.20 MURRUMBEENA 0.1.1

2nd QUARTER The 2'd quarter started in style, an early clearance to Brycey and Riffa and Tungy doing the hard EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

MATCH REPORTS stuff, with Big Jack imposing himself in the ruck and Caratz repelling attack after attack. Along with Magic Milsy, Dan, AB and Wacko formed a defensive wall Ross Lyon could be proud of. In a Captains Y. Hammo dashed through the centre wing area Keith Greig style and finished with a goal. Coona, Rozo and Riffa combined to get out of trouble and into space. Murrumbeena Gold tried hard and it was congested footy. Stevo showed dash in the pocket and the Knights were moving the ball well and causing headaches in the opposition's coaches box. Meysta created pressure as Riffa was with his tackling Lenny Hayes style and Brycey snapped a great goal. Mahons willed himself with every contest and was rewarded with a goal with Murrumbeena scoreless.

SCORE:

EAST MALVERN 6. 6. 42 MURRUMBEENA 0 .1 .1

3rd QUARTER

With the coaching panel and line coaches works of : 'release the footy' 'use the first option' 'run the footy' 'tackles, tackles and more tackles'

The quarter started with Knights demanding the footy and intimidating the opposition. With Apple, Soap and Meysta working hard across half back, Murrumbeena came again and again. Riffa, Tungy and Brycey repelled, contested and cleared. Apple show a great 2" effort to get the ball out to Riffa, who took a safe mark. Chaffa rose from the bottom of the pack, where real boys go to get the footy.

It was a Swans like lock down, we drove the ball into the windy forward line where Hoodie had a great shot for it just to run out. Milsey, Stevo and Hamo were working hard as Murrumbeena scored 2 goals. With renewed determination Hen dashed along the win and used his height to advantage. There were plenty of ball ups and congestion as the ball went end to end. Chaffa just missed one. Mahons was allover it with a winning attitude and Wacko was all over it at centre half forward. So a good quarter, against the wind.

SCORE: EAST MALVERN 7.2.10 MURRUMBEENA 1.52.13

4'" QUARTER

With the wind and a handy lead, but a tiring umpire showing signs of needing a refreshment, the might Knights shut the game down. Mahons, Dan, Hoodie and AB were having a well earned rest. It was time for fun. Hamo nearly got altitude sickness he flew so high and took a screamer on the wing. It was an Auskick like swarm around the ball. Meysta continued with a great game. Halsey took a steadying mark at full back as Murrumbeena attached Carat, was playing a blinder and Macea was EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

MATCH REPORTS clearing it from the square. Milsey was bulloeking through the big boys and Chaffa chased down a player to prevent a goal. By now the pace was out of the game and the umpire, who was showing a little known skill with the whistle. The final siren went. Snakes and a song, what more is needed.

3.05pm

There was a certain degree of tension in the damp air on the overcast afternoon of the Inaugural U/12 East Malvern Knights Girls Football Match! The Team Manager was focused on all her numerous duties, the Coach was wondering “have I done enough preparation?.!” And the Assistant Coach was mopping up all the loose ends, earings…check, fingernails…check, mouthguards …check! As 3.05pm drew closer so too did the nerves build until…BAAAAAAARRRRPPPPP………GAME TIME!

1st Quarter

The first quarter saw the girls kicking into the wind and much to the coaches delight, were listening to his instructions of being first to the ball. Before long the ball was deep into the forward line and it was Gisele (8) who took a mark in the forward pocket. However strong defence from East Sandringham saw them rebound out of their backline, down their wing and bomb it long it their forward line. Mia C (32) had other ideas though and put an end to the Sandy attack with a strong mark in our backline. It was a great start to the quarter with the ball being attacked by both sides, the Knights backline were defending well under constant attack from the Sandy girls. Eventually the weight of possession was too much and after numerous shots at goal, East Sandringham got their first goal.

Back to the centre for another ball up and again the girls in the backline were under pressure with East Sandringham peppering the forward line. Luckily Bryanna A (30) was handling the pressure well, was getting her hands on the ball and fed out a “look away” handball that found its target in Jamie Z (9). Jamie then delivered the ball by foot to Belsy S (45) who streamed down the wing and kicked long into the wind to find Chloe M (15). Then Chole with some light footed dancing in the forward got around numerous defenders and BANG the Knights were on the board with their first!

Another centre bounce and this time Malvern Knights cleared the ball and attacked! Gisele S (8) managed to stream down deep into the forward line, collect the ball and took a shot…..narrow point (just)! East Sandringham then kicked out and utilising the wind, kicked long. But only as far as Belsy S (45) who took a great mark and played on, ran deep into the forward line and BOOM unloaded with a strong straight kick into the wind for the Knights second GOAL! Knights hit the front and the mums start screaming!!

Back to centre and the rest of the quarter is filled with contested football. East Sandringham again use the wind and continue to pepper the goals. Heidi T (23) was contesting hard in traffic, Mia V (20) picked up a free kick on the wing and Jamie Z (9) got tripped in the centre of the ground! It was intense stuff but the girls were loving it! MATCH REPORTS

Knights – 2.1.13 East Sandringham 1.6.12

2nd Quarter

The 2nd quarter started much like the first with East Sandy get the ball first and kicking long into their forward line. But only as far as Jamie Z (9) who took a strong mark in defence. Gisele S (8) was at her running best opting to run the ball out of the backline and launch the ball forward to find Sacha B (22). Sacha quickly moved the ball on and found Isabella M (63) who kicked long with the wind and got it deep into the Knights forward line. AJ M (52) brought the ball to ground and again through heavy traffic roved the ball to her advantage and SNAP …..Knights 3rd Goal!

After the centre bounce the ball was again in our backline but our Knights stood tall. Giselle S (8) marked in defence, then found Jamie Z (9) with a great pass. The ball then got to Mia C (32) who kicked long into the forward line which saw Mia V (20) take a strong contested mark. After a close miss from the set shot, East Sandringham rebounded out of the backline. However the Knights backline again stood tall, got their hands on the ball and kicked long with the wind. A rolling ball was then gathered by Georgia B (10), who swung around onto her right foot with a 30m drop punt which landed in the goal square, took a favourable bounce and GOAL…… Knights 4th!

After another centre bounce, the East Sandringham team were not to be demoralised by such fast flowing football from the Knights. They rebounded again into the wind and this time could not be stopped by the strong Knights defence. East Sandy get their second goal.

Another centre bounce, another clearance from East Sandy. However great rucking from Heidi T (23) in the backline, got the ball down to Mia C (32) who handballed out to the Isabella M (63). Isabella then kicked long to Sacha B (22) on the wing. Then with great desperation, Isabella continued to run the length of the field, got into the forward line, got the ball back from Sacha’s long kick and then booted Knights 5th goal – a great effort!

East Malvern 5.2.32 East Sandringham 2.8.20

3rd Quarter

The premiership quarter, the opposition have the wind and they use it! Luckily the opening attack results in a point and the Knights can regroup. After the kick out Gabby T (1) get her hands on the ball and fires out a massive handball to break open the play. The next 5-6 minutes is just plain tough footy, with both teams going hard at the ball. Georgia B (10) saves a certain goal by marking on the line, Isabella M (63) takes a great mark in defence, Claudia P (27) works hard on the ball and another great mark by Gabby T (1).

The Knights are defending well under constant pressure as East Sandy have come out firing and utilising the wind! They snare one goal and now the coach is wearing a patch along the boundary line as he walks from wing to back pocket urging on his girls! EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

MATCH REPORTS

Gisele S (8) is showing what a great engine she has with plenty of run out of the backline and drives it deep into the forward line. Lily E (21) gets caught without the ball deep in the forward line. FREE KICK! She goes back, takes her time and kicks long and straight into the wind for Knights 6th Goal!

The third quarter ends with the mighty Knights holding the East Sandringham team to one goal! A great quarter!

East Malvern 6.3.39 East Sandringham 3.10.28

QUICK RADAR REPORT – THE WIND IS PICKING UP AND A STORMS A COMIN!!!!!

4th Quarter

The 4th quarter starts and the wind is starting to blow, the girls have listened to the coach “kick long with the wind”!

Georgia B (10) gets the ball in the backline and kicks long to Isabela M (63). She has a long shot at goal but just falls short. East Sandy get the ball out of the backline from the kick in and are away. However they kick it straight to Belsy S (45) in the centre and she captialises on the loose ball and thumps the ball long! The ball runs deep into the forward line and Sacha B (22) roves beautifully, steadies and kicks true………Knights 7th!

The centre bounce starts the game again and the cream is starting to rise. East Sandringham’s best player “Long Blonde Pony Tail” cannot stop getting the ball. She runs the ball deep into attack, takes on the Knights defence on the boundary and succeeds by slotting a goal from the pocket! Now the Knights coach is starting to pace again!

Another centre bounce, another clearance from the Blonde Pony Tail! The Knights defence try their best but East Sandy get another goal into the wind. The gap is getting closer and Troy’s pacing is turning the grass brown!

Another centre clearance from the opposition see the ball deep in Knights backline. Belsy S (45) gets her hands on the ball and kicks long. Abby M (5) gathers and gives off a great handball to AJ M (52) who clears out of the backline. Sacha B (22) attacks the ball in the forward line and gets a hurried kick to move the ball on quickly to Heidi T (23) who has a snap but the ball goes through for a point!

East Sandy now kicks the ball out from the backline but with the wind, the ball ends up with Erin B (28) in front of goal. She goes back, takes a big breath, comes in and ……………………kicks the Knights 8th!

The ball is back in the centre for another bounce but on the boundary there are people running everywhere! The heavens have opened and the rain is coming down! The girls keep on playing like hardened, suburban, footy veterans and the East Sandringham team forges straight ahead into the wind and rain. Somehow they keep the ball moving forward and manage to scrape another goal! EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

MATCH REPORTS

Now there is drama everywhere! The rain is coming down, the mums are getting saturated, the team managers team sheet is a mess and the Knights are only 3 POINTS UP! ………………TROY!?!?!

With only a couple of minutes left it’s the last ball up. East Sandy get the clearance again but Bryanna A (30) cleans up the loose ball. A long kick forward finds Sacha B (22) on the forward flank. Somehow in the wet conditions Sacha manages to swing around on the left foot and BANG ………kicks the Knights 9th Goal to secure a fantastic win!

MATCH REPORTS U9 Royal Saxon Greens v East Sandringham

1st quarter

The game kicked off with a recently unfamiliar sight, the ball piling out of the centre into the opposition’s forward line. While the coaching staff reviewed their centre stoppage strategy, Nicky P repelled the attacks, only to find the forward press of East Sandy returning the pill with interest. The brains trust would earn their pay today. It wasn’t long before we got going with Willa taking a big mark in defence (which probably indicated he was playing at full forward) and got the “green show” started. Slammin’ took a strong mark and played on instinctively moving the ball into the forward line where Maca pounced on the ball for a…….point. The opposition kicked out but couldn’t get it past Burner who marked strongly and used his booming left foot for maximum pointage. GOAL! The opposition were thrusting forward continuously, but Louis K and Hayner were desperate in defence and refused to allow passage. Ice began to thaw and provided the spark as we moved forward with pace where our version of Buddy Burner (more accurate though) slotted through his second. The boys were up and about at Stanley Grose! The Bear came out of hibernation with a quality centre clearance, hitting Willa at centre half forward who supplied the running Armers who duly slotted with stunning poise and class. Another defensive strategy of the greens’ coaching panel became evident – when close to the opposition goal, get it through for a point, then…..unleash the weapon! Goughie was roosting the ball out of full back like in the 80’s. Note to team manager – when Goughie’s at full back, we may need to get air clearance from the Civil Aviation Authority. Quarter time scores: Knights 3.1 (19), East Sandy 0.1 (1)

2nd quarter

We had defended everything East Sandy had in the first quarter but there was still a feeling of vulnerability as the ball was bounced for the second. “The farm animals” – Duck, Moo and Bull got us moving with a long kick by Duck out of the guts (is that the duck’s guts?) that hit Bull on the move. Bull has developed a taste for the run and bounce, which was being tested on the soft Stanley Grose surface, but we got it forward where Goughie perfectly centered the ball. East Sandy were defending well, but looked anaemic moving forward. Slammin’ was marking everything and Bull and Maca were linking up with defence and running through the middle. Chopper was giving us plenty of run off half back, but it was the player under the injury cloud, Finno that supplied the quarter highlight. Nursing a broken wrist, dislocated thumb, split webbing and carpal tunnel syndrome, Finno displayed good, old-fashioned toughness as he won the ball back from the opposition, got it off to Ice who got it to the Bull and goal! If that didn’t inspire the boys what would? Well Bazza was inspired. Not even goal posts were going to get in Bazza’s way as he took one out, Leigh Matthews style in search for the prune. Note to Team Manager (No.2) – send concussion management guidelines to the Georges. Maca was absolutely prolific in quarter 2 – marks in defence, run through the middle and supplying the forward line. Well done Maca! Scores Knights 4.1 (25), East Sandy 0.1. (1)

MATCH REPORTS

Our toughness and run hadn’t quite put us clear of a desperate opposition, but that was about to change. T-shirt was desperately unlucky not to be a benefactor of the “T-shirt’s paddock” strategy employed by the forward coach as he copped a bad bounce, but as he locked the ball in with frontal pressure, Duck reaped the rewards, only missing narrowly. The Axe was living up to his nickname with a strong tackle, spilling the ball to Bull who mopped up and supplied Ice, who was now vapor. Slasher defended frugally, whilst Willa took another nice mark and moved the ball with precision to Goughie to Louis K and bang, into the forward line. This was what the coach wanted to see – run and carry. Duck worked hard to gain a free kick and sent the ball long where Bear emerged from the pack, swung onto the trusty left and kicked a sausage. The fat lady cleared her throat. Bull had shelved the bounce and started to channel Diesel Williams, churning handballs out like they were going out of fashion. Our runners soaked it up with Smasher booting long under pressure to find Bear on the boundary line, who despite opposition still tried the impossible and shot at goal for a point. Note to coach – his dad would’ve centered it. Bull’s pressure was phenomenal and we made sure it wasn’t a waste when Nicky P pounced on a loose ball and slotted from inches. Vocal exercises for the large female. Great quarter Knighters!! Scores at the final change Knights 6.5 (41), East Sandy 0.1 (1)

4th quarter

Was it time for showtime? Yeeeaaahhhh! Straight from the bounce – Bear taps to Willa who gives to Armers who sells some Candy, gives back to Willa and…….GGGOOOOAAAAALLLLLL! Start the band!!!! Hayner and Wild Child were brilliant across half back and Slammin’ took his 20th mark for the match. He looked like “Buckets” Loewe at his prime in the 90’s. Maca continued with his breakout game and supplied Louis K for another Knights goal. Champagne football. Smasher took a great run down the wing and delivered long. The ball came back but Smasher sent it back with interest with a massive barrel. Our forwards worked hard to lock it in and Maca snapped for another exciting point! Smasher then finished his great work off with a mark and goal. Here we go, opening chords….Siren……

“Oh, we’re from Tiger………” (whoops still excited from Saturday’s mauling of Hawthorn)

First quarter – 2.1.13 v 0.0.0

Pre match the boys looked half asleep whilst Murrumbeena looked fired up and were clearly setting themselves for a big contest. The coaching staff tried to get the boys to match murrumbeena's hype with some pre match drills but it felt like we were talking to a bunch of boys that had just got out of bed. We shouldn't have worried because from the first bounce the team was "on" with gang tackling, first in for the ball and second efforts a delight to watch.

Will Hogan was given the task in the ruck and seemed to relish the responsibility feeding Johnsy, Finn Jones and Tom Riley who were ferociously attacking the ball. After a few minutes the coaching staff settled back in amazement as the well oiled machine clicked into top gear. By quarter time there were great players everywhere, Al breaking away from contests, Buster dominating CHB, Andy and Brycey creating run through the centre, Fraser, Ozzie, Josh, Alexander and Mitch dangerous up forward. That is just to name a few, we could have mentioned the whole team. Kicking into a stiff breeze on a cold wet day we had held murrumbeena scoreless and piled on a few of our own with Mitch Rebecchi unlucky not to have slotted a couple as well.

Goals Oscar Wyer and Fraser Morrisby Best for quarter Entire team.

Second quarter – 6.5.41 v 0.0.0.

Better than the first, with the boys sharing the ball around with hard running and spreading to create options. Parents were asking how the coaches had got them to work so well together. The coaches were asking the same thing, it was champagne footy with many more players chiming in. Charlie Nadenbousch and Josh Wilson dominating ruck contests, Nolchie doing all the team things as usual, Match bursting through packs, Lowie dangerous up forward, Adam and TV providing plenty of run. By half time the contest was over and the coaches were running out of superlatives. Best half of footy for the year by the team with everyone contributing no matter where they were playing.

Third Quarter Goal: Oscar Wyer

At half time we just asked for a repeat of the first half, what else could we say? We may have had a little lapse in concentration but the effort was still more than pleasing. Whilst there were great games again by Al, Buster, Alexander, Fraser, Andy, Ozzie and Brycey, it was pleasing to see how all our players are improving every week individually and contributing to the team.

It's great that we saw both Mitch and Will Hogan put in their best games for the season.

The team things they are doing instinctively makes coaching easy but the real test is next week, with a very tough game against another top side. If we play like we did this week then we will be in it up to their ears. Well played everybody.

1st Quarter A dark day presented the Knights as we lamented the loss of the godfather of disco Robin Gibb during the week. Nonetheless, Donkey won the toss and we kicked with the breeze – great work from DC and Crowey early and we had the majority of the ball in the qtr. Spider looked menacing and Skegg shrugged of some Night Fever and was working hard. The Spicks and Specks around the ground went our way but the Tigers were drawing on strong Emotions to get the ball and drew first blood with a goal. They were running harder and marking strongly although our defence held up well lead by Lewie and DC. Bones started well and was in everything early – the Knights were Stayin’ Alive but the Tigers had the early upper hand. Goals Best for DC, Crowey, Lewie, Spider the quarter EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

MATCH REPORTS

2nd Quarter Against the breeze we had to work hard with Fish and Bull putting in some good hard efforts. Macca, Spider and Crowey combined well and we repelled some good attack down back with Ziggy, Hoppo and Donkey keeping them to only a couple and avoiding a half time Tragedy by sending the ball forward. We needed some goals to avoid a Heartbreaker here but the Tigers were hanging tough. Bones was putting his body on the line time and again and Skegg kept us in it. There was lot of Jive Talking from the boys as they came off at half time which was a worry to the fans – we could be saying to the Tigers You win again? Goals Best for Bones, Hoppo, Skegg, DC the quarter

3rd Quarter The Runner decided I got to get a message to you and sprayed the boys at half time about How deep is your love for footy? With these Words in their minds the Knights switched on and began going in harder, tackling and running. Towers got us on the board and peppered the goals while Woody stepped up and bagged a ripper from the boundary which shot us into the lead. This was a different team as Donkey, Rowdy and Fish all got into the game. Macca showed us what he’s capable of by running hard up and down the wing to create the lose man, while DC and Hoppo were at the bottom of everything. Crowey took more marks than anyone on the field and we used the breeze beautifully to be on top at the break. Goals Towers, Woody Best for Macca, Hoppo, Skegg, Crowey the quarter

4th Quarter Hang tough boys, was the call from Hugh as we defended into the breeze. Skegg got an early goal from a brilliant leg break kick and everyone of the Knights stood tall especially Boomer, Scarecrow and Mad Dog to defend our lead from a determined Tigers outfit. This was our best win for the season and our boys showed some serious character to turn their game around. Hugh and Nick couldn’t have been more pleased and Nick even reckoned we were like Richmond in our season turnaround having beaten the three top sides – let’s hope not as they tend to get a bit in front of themselves only to let their fans down come finals time. MATCH REPORTS

East Malvern Red 4.6.30 def St. Pauls Colts 0.2.2

The Reds bounce back to win well against the helmet ensconced boys from St. Pauls.

On a cold, overcast, rain-threatening day the Knights turned out at their home track of Stanley Grose and returned to the winners list. After the coldest and wettest May week in the life of the boys there was some apprehension about how they would play. Coach had decided to cancel training on Friday ostensibly to freshen the boys up, but really because the weather was an abomination and he had earlier bought a rom-com, Midnight in Paris, to watch that evening and wanted to get home early.

As he watched the boys warm up he immediately felt the decision to freshen them up was the right call. The Reds looked sharp and the super weapon, Assistant Coach Andy Ralph, had arrived on time and had taken the vest from the manager’s arm without it even hitting the ground.

Andy was switched on, Coach was switched on, The boys looked on.

The message was simple: Play On Fast, Strong Hands, Wet and Muddy Good.

However, the Colts also seemed switched on as they waited in position ten minutes before the match was due to start. The Reds had moved up a division and the Colts were confident they could rain on our parade. When the game started four minutes early the Colts, in keeping to their name, EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

MATCH REPORTS bolted from the great, but as so often happens with Horse Races the bolters get over run and when one of our Captains Lachie Duignan grabbed the ball and kicked it long twice the Red machine was kick started. Charlie Ralph won the ball an ran on and then laid two strong tackles, Tommy Williams showed great courage crashing across an opponent brining the ball to the ground and bringing guest trainer Paul O’Brien into action. Pat McCabe made a great Andrew Mackie style smother and Sam ‘Stevie J’ Bowen took a hanger of a mark before playing on deep in the forward line. The quarter finished with a stirring run along the parents wing by Max Burke who with pace carried the ball 30 metres forward.

But for all the good play at quarter time the Reds were goal-less leading 2 points to nil.

Max creates some run along the boundary line.

With plenty of Knights in support Matt can move the ball quickly. EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

MATCH REPORTS

With just two points for the quarter the address was centered on staying to two thirds of the plan: playing on and staying tough. The more abstract: wet and muddy good, part of the plan wasn’t reinforced. Instead Coach complimented the boys on playing on faster but wanted them to build by looking up, lifting their heads to look for options and implored them to keep strong hands on the ball in the contest.

The Second quarter started well for the Reds with Will Russell going hard to gather a loose ball, Zach Knowles being strong at the contest and clearing congestion with quick hands. Ben Riley briefly forgot which way we were kicking but kept his head over the contest. Oliver Van Bronswijk played tall on the last line of defence and won the ball. Bailey Mullen provided some great run, Jack Pinder went in hard for the ball and should have won a free kick. Back from Noosa Cats fan Ollie Gill provided some Trav Varcoe like run that he has become famous for. Down back Ryan Hede held position and Lachie Appleton won a succession of handballs. Luke Lourey swung onto the left for a long kick and Ethan Waddington bagged a long goal.

After a great quarter from the Reds we had added two goals to a solitary behind to lead at Orange time 14 points to 1. The scoreboard was closer than the game was being played. EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

As the boys ate Oranges Coach gave a typically calm and educational address. EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

MATCH REPORTS

Everyone listened intently.

Some listened with a touch of wonder.

The address reinforced the boys great handballing, reiterated the ‘one bounce’ rule, again implored the boys to lift their eyes when playing on but praised the improved in that area and told the boys he had confidence that the goals would come.

The boys finished the Oranges and ran onto the ground with confidence.

They felt supported, they felt confident, they were getting on top.

The scores would come.

As they ran onto the field the super weapon had couple of messages of support for Max. EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

MATCH REPORTS

As usual whatever Andy did, it worked. Max played a great third quarter. But so did the Knights. Ned Crowe kept trying and started to create some real drive. Ewen Harley worked into the game with usual endeavor, Harrison Trotter kept burrowing in to the bottom of packs and Matt Adams went on another great run. With the desperation befitting a captain Harry Kent dug in, got to the bottom of the pack and ball and held it up. At the hooter the Knights led 22 pts to 1 point.

Ned drives the ball forward.

MATCH REPORTS

The three quarter time address focused on continuing the plan but included a message for the midfield to stay out of the forward line and included a centre half forward demonstration.

The last quarter saw the Knights extend their lead kicking one goal two to one point. They dominated possession but again weren’t able to convert from the weight of possession. There was some great play with Harrison Trotter again burrowing in, Ewen Harley providing great run and Tom O’Brien attacking the ball. EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

MATCH REPORTS

The Knights Reds returned to the winners list as the siren went running out winners 30 points to 2. They shook hands and sang to song in celebration.

The summary of the match from the Coach was, as usual, a good one.

We had been first in. We had been tougher. We had played on well, we had started to lift our eyes. We had held onto the ball. Special mention to Ollie Van Bronswijk for great improvement in this area.

Areas to work work on – Bouncing, Tackling and our Voice.

There are, of course, some special mentions.

The Cold Rock award was well deserved and went to Sam ‘Stevie J’ Bowen. Sam provided run, competed hard and took a spectacular mark. Well Done Sam.

The Grill’d Hamburger award for the most improvement went to one of our captains for the day in Lachie Duignan. Well done on a great game and great improvement Lachie. EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

Andrew Trotter also gets a special mention for his insistence on running the boundary line carrying a twenty kilo moving and unpredictable weight. Well done Andrew.
