  • Carrownagowan Wind Farm Dear Homeowner
Carrownagowan Wind Farm Dear Homeowner, First and foremost, we hope this finds you safe and well in these challenging times, and adjusting as best possible to new ways of going about daily life. As you may be aware, Coillte’s Renewable Energy business has been actively exploring a wind farm development opportunity in the Slieve Bearnagh area since early 2018. The community engagement model which we use within our team has given us an opportunity to meet with a very high proportion of people residing within 2 km of the potential wind farm. The proposed Carrownagowan Wind Farm project is nearing the end of its pre-planning phase and should shortly enter the planning process. Under normal circumstances, we would be holding a public information event now in order to present the enclosed information to the wider public in the area surrounding this project. However, the Covid-19 pandemic and associated restrictions mean that this is not now possible. As an alternative, we are now distributing the attached information very widely. It sets out a detailed overview of all aspects of the proposed Carrownagowan Wind Farm project. We acknowledge that this is by no means ideal, but please be assured that we will continue to make every effort to ensure that we provide you with all the information you need in order to fully understand the details of this proposed project and also make available the necessary resources within our team to support any engagement. Once you have had a chance to read through this brochure, please do make contact with any of the team using the contact details at the back if you have any areas of the project you wish to discuss further.

EIAR CARROWNAGOWAN WIND FARM Chapter 13 | CULTURAL HERITAGE 13 CULTURAL HERITAGE 13.1 INTRODUCTION This Chapter describes archaeology, architectural, and cultural heritage that are potentially impacted by the project (please refer to section 2.3 of Chapter 2 for a full description of the project and the proposed development). The purpose of this assessment is to identify relevant archaeological, architectural, and cultural heritage that are within the vicinity of the project site, to determine the impact, if any, on these heritage assets. The chapter sets out the methodology followed in carrying out the assessment (Section 13.1.2), describes the receiving environment (Section 13.2), and summarises the main characteristics of the proposed project which are of relevance to the archaeological, architectural and cultural heritage. The evaluation of the predicted impacts of the proposed project and replacement lands on archaeological, architectural and cultural heritage are described (Section 13.3), measures are proposed to mitigate these impacts and residual impacts are described (Section 13.4 and Section 13.5). All heritage assets are illustrated on Figures 13.1-13.8, in Volume III, Appendix 13-1. 13.1.1 Scope of assessment The baseline assessment of the project is discussed under four sections: • The proposed project (the wind farm and turbine delivery route works areas) and associated grid connection route (Section 13.2.1), • the replacement lands at Cooraclare, Co. Clare (Section 13.2.2), • the replacement lands at Ballard, Co. Wicklow (Section 13.2.3) and • the replacement lands at Trillackacurry, Co. Longford (Section 13.2.4). This chapter of the EIAR determines, as far as reasonably possible from existing records, the nature of the heritage resource within the footprint of the Project and replacement lands and within the receiving environments using appropriate methods of study.

In the last few weeks I travelled to 46 Cemeteries throughout Clare. They were mainly on the sites of old churches, monasteries or abbeys, with fascinating histories. The monks certainly had an eye for beauty and selected peaceful settings for their work. Some were on islands, nearly all were on hills, and they invariably were overlooking rivers, lakes, Lough Derg, the Shannon, the Shannon Estuary or the Atlantic. The views from some were spectacular. Inis Cealtra (Holy Island), Scattery Island, Clareabbey, Quin Abbey, Killone Abbey, St Flannan’s Cathedral Killaloe, are amongst the most beautiful sites in Clare.
