Foynes is a major port located in the midwest of Ireland on the southern bank of the . During the late 1930s and early 1940s, land-based planes lacked sufficient flying range for Atlantic crossings; therefore, would stop on the eastern shore of Foynes before crossing the Atlantic. As a result, Foynes became one of the biggest civilian airports in Europe during World War II.

Limerick is located at the head of the Shannon Estuary where the river widens before it flows into the . With a population of 94,192, Limerick is the third most populous urban centre in Ireland. The county colours of Limerick are green and white, and the county has a strong tradition. Sports teams from the county are often referred to as ‘the Shannonsiders.’

Limerick was establishment by the as a walled city on King’s Island (an island in the ) in 812. A great castle was built on the orders of King John in 1200. It was besieged three times in the 17th century, resulting in the famous and the flight of the defeated Catholic leaders abroad. Much of the city was built during the following Georgian prosperity, which ended abruptly with the Act of Union in 1800. Today the city flourishes with a growing multicultural population.
