MEDIA RELEASE 10 January 2019 Berg | Directed by William Kentridge | Conducted by Andrea Molino William Kentridge’s OA debut described as “stupendous” and not to be missed January 25 – February 15, 2019 | Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House Starring | Michael Honeyman | Lorina Gore | John Daszak South African artist William Kentridge’s much acclaimed production of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck opens in Sydney this summer. The renowned artist’s take on the landmark opera about a man’s descent into madness is a brilliant collision of art, multimedia, music and theatre. One of the world’s most outstanding and celebrated visual artists, Kentridge is known for his animated films based on charcoal drawings and distinct work across all mediums including sculpture and collage. Kentridge’s artistic reach is far and wide ranging; his productions have been seen in opera houses around the world including The Met in New York and Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and include productions of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Shostakovich’s The Nose and Berg’s Lulu. Described as “A stupendous, faith-restoring production” (The Telegraph, UK), Kentridge brings expressionism to his interpretation of Wozzeck, incorporating his characteristic drawings and projections to blur the lines of reality and echo the protagonist’s internal chaos. This gripping production pays homage to Berg’s original vision set during The Great War, using an array of imagery to depict the desolation and destruction that accompanied that time. Praised for his portrayal of the neurotic and restless King Roger, Australian baritone Michael Honeyman will bring the same energy when tackling the role of the tormented and unstable Wozzeck. Dual Helpmann award winner, soprano Lorina Gore will star alongside Honeyman as his long suffering and ill-fated lover, Marie. This will be the first time the pair have sung together since their highly acclaimed performances in King Roger in 2017. They will be joined onstage by an incredible supporting cast including British tenor John Daszak as The Drum-Major and Opera Australia principal artists John Longmuir, Richard Anderson and Dominica Matthews all making role debuts. Italian conductor Andrea Molino continues his successful relationship with Opera Australia, leading the Opera Australia Orchestra and Chorus in this unsettling score mirroring the physical and mental struggles portrayed on stage. Based on Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, Berg’s haunting opera was shaped by the composer’s own experiences on the front lines during the First World War. Kentridge’s production, a collaboration between Opera Australia, the Metropolitan Opera, Salzburg Festival and the Canadian Opera Company delivers this 20th century masterpiece in visual display like never before. 1 To coincide with Wozzeck, William Kentridge will give a talk at the Sydney Opera House on 22 January. There will also be exhibitions of Kentridge's work, including drawings from Wozzeck at the Annandale Galleries (22 January – 16 February) and the Art Gallery of NSW (until 24 March).
