CHANGES TO CODING FRAMES - FEBRUARY 2000 TO JANUARY 2001 NB: the previous note indicated changes for February 1999 to January 2000. A1 & A1(2) - Country codes There are NO NEW CODES from February 2000. A2, A3 & A3(2) - County/Unitary Authority/London Borough & Town codes From January 2001, the 3-digit county/unitary authority/London Borough codes on A2 (Q6) are being replaced by 5-digit codes in line with the town codes on A3 (Q60). Of course, the first 3 digits of the town code are the same as the old county code. However, there are some exceptions: On the A2 (Q6), London Borough codes 066 – 097, and 098 (Barking & Dagenham – Wandsworth, and London Borough not known) have been deleted and are replaced by the following codes: Barking & Dagenham 70100 Barnet 70200 Bexley 70300 Brent 70400 Bromley 70500 Camden 70600 City of London/Westminster 70700 Croydon 70800 Ealing 70900 Enfield 71000 Greenwich 71100 Hackney 71200 Hammersmith & Fulham 71300 Haringey 71400 Harrow 71500 Havering 71600 Hillingdon 71700 Hounslow 71800 Islington 71900 Kensington & Chelsea 72000 Kingston upon Thames 72100 Lambeth 72200 Lewisham 72300 Merton 72400 Newham 72500 Redbridge 72600 Richmond upon Thames 72700 Southwark 72800 Sutton 72900 Tower Hamlets 73000 Waltham Forest 73100 Wandsworth 73200 DK London Borough 79900 On A3 (Q60), Greater London still has the town code 77777. On both A2 and A3 , Northern Ireland-all towns, formerly coded 600 at Q6 and 99993 at Q60, is now coded 60000. Also from January 2001, the following town codes on A3 (Q60 only) are reinstated for Channel Islands and Isle of Man (to be used when visited by foreign residents on a side-trip): Isle of Man-Other 03800 Douglas – Isle of Man 03801 Peel – Isle of Man 03802 Ramsey - Isle of Man 03803 Kirkmichael – Isle of Man 03804 Castletown – Isle of Man 03805 Guernsey – Channel Islands 04801 Alderney – Channel Islands 04802 Sark – Channel Islands 04803 Jersey - Channel Islands 04900 On A2 (Q6), DK Town/County/Unitary Authority is now coded 99999. For Q7, the 'states/provinces' coding frames for 2000 were: S1 USA & Australia, S2 Netherlands, S3 France. For 2001, the coding frames are: S1 South Africa & Canada, S2 Germany, S3 Italy. B & B3 - Airport codes There are NO NEW CODES from February 2000. C1, C5 & C7 - Airline codes Sabre Airways (prefix SBE, code 01047) is now also identified by prefix JN. Below are airlines/airline codes new to the IPS list from February 2000. C3 & C4 - Sampled UK Airport codes Due to changing circumstances at Heathrow, from quarter 1 2001, airport route code 49 reverts to its original definition: Heathrow T1 Arrivals / Departures – Irish = 49 D - Seaport/Channel Tunnel Destination codes There are NO NEW CODES from February 2000. E/F - Shipping Line codes/Sea & Channel Tunnel Routes From quarter 3 2000, sea routes 81 Swansea-Cork was removed from the sample. J1, J2 & J2(2) – Migrant/Long-stay visitor codes From January 2001, the occupation coding frame based on the 1972 classifications (occupations 1-18, student 19, retired 20, housewife/househusband 21, unoccupied 22, don’t know 99) has been replaced with a new coding frame (occupations 1-9, student 10, housewife/husband 11, retired/unoccupied 12, don’t know 99). Questionnaire Changes: 2000 to 2001 New questions: Ø QS1-S4 Sport participation: all departing Foreign residents except those with RFV 93-96 and 07/92 trailers. Ø Q60b accomodation type: departing foreign residents. The categories are slightly different to those used in 1998: 1 Hotel/guest house 2 Bed & breakfast 3 Camping/ caravan/ mobile home 4 Hostel/ university/ school 5 Holiday village/ holiday centre 6 Rented House 7 Paying guest in family/ friends house 8 Free guest/ staying with relatives or friends 9 Own home 10 Other Ø Q88a-88b Previous visits to UK: foreign departures except those on same day transits Ø Q50a Package type: UK arrivals indicating they are on a package tour at Q47. Categories are: 1 All inclusive 2 Full board 3 Half board 4 Bed & breakfast 5 Self-catering/ room only 6 Fly drive with accomodation 7 Escorted coach tour 8 Other Ø Q81-81b Distance driven abroad: arriving UK residents sea/tunnel Amended questions: Ø Q7a regions of residence: for 2001 countries are Canada, Germany, Italy and South Africa. (See coding frames S1-S4). Ø Q7b language spoken by South African residents. Ø Side trips to Channel Islands & Isle of Man: foreign residents trips to CI and IoM will not be treated at separate side trips. Ø Q44-52 expenditure: wording revisions. Q44b and Q45 have been swapped around. Ø Response coding for a minimum changed as only nationality or residence needed.
