This is part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, an isolated mountain chain of ancient crystalline rock formed through a cycle of block faulting and erosion that stretches from the Taita Hills in Kenya down to the Southern Highlands in Tanzania.

  • Xenosaurus Tzacualtipantecus. the Zacualtipán Knob-Scaled Lizard Is Endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of Eastern Mexico
    Xenosaurus tzacualtipantecus. The Zacualtipán knob-scaled lizard is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of eastern Mexico. This medium-large lizard (female holotype measures 188 mm in total length) is known only from the vicinity of the type locality in eastern Hidalgo, at an elevation of 1,900 m in pine-oak forest, and a nearby locality at 2,000 m in northern Veracruz (Woolrich- Piña and Smith 2012). Xenosaurus tzacualtipantecus is thought to belong to the northern clade of the genus, which also contains X. newmanorum and X. platyceps (Bhullar 2011). As with its congeners, X. tzacualtipantecus is an inhabitant of crevices in limestone rocks. This species consumes beetles and lepidopteran larvae and gives birth to living young. The habitat of this lizard in the vicinity of the type locality is being deforested, and people in nearby towns have created an open garbage dump in this area. We determined its EVS as 17, in the middle of the high vulnerability category (see text for explanation), and its status by the IUCN and SEMAR- NAT presently are undetermined. This newly described endemic species is one of nine known species in the monogeneric family Xenosauridae, which is endemic to northern Mesoamerica (Mexico from Tamaulipas to Chiapas and into the montane portions of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala). All but one of these nine species is endemic to Mexico. E-mail: [email protected]. Abstract Natural history of Xenosaurus phalaroanthereon (Squamata, Xenosauridae), a Knob-scaled Lizard from Oaxaca, Mexico. We made observations on the natural history of a population of the lizard Xenosaurus phalaroanthereon from Oaxaca, Mexico. Females were larger than males (SVL). Most lizards were found completely inside rock crevices. Mean body temperature was 20.3°C. Body temperature was related primarily to substrate temperature. Body temperature was not influenced by any crevice characteristic. Based on abdominal palpation, the size at maturity for females appears to be 117-119 mm SVL. Sex ratio did not differ from 1:1. We com- pare the ecology of this population to that of other Xenosaurus.     Herpetology Notes, volume 8: 553-555 (2015) (published online on 06 December 2015) A new locality for Correlophus ciliatus and Rhacodactylus leachianus (Sauria: Diplodactylidae) from Néhoué River, northern New Caledonia Mickaël Sanchez1, Jean-Jérôme Cassan2 and Thomas Duval3,* Giant geckos from New Caledonia (Pacific Ocean) We observed seven native gecko species: Bavayia are charismatic nocturnal lizards. This paraphyletic (aff.) cyclura (n=1), Bavayia (aff.) exsuccida (n=1), group is represented by three genera, Rhacodactylus, Correlophus ciliatus (n=1), Dierrogekko nehoueensis Correlophus and Mniarogekko, all endemic to Bauer, Jackman, Sadlier and Whitaker, 2006 (n=1), New Caledonia (Bauer et al., 2012). Rhacodactylus Eurydactylodes agricolae Henkel and Böhme, 2001 leachianus (Cuvier, 1829) is largely distributed on the (n=1), Mniarogekko jalu Bauer, Whitaker, Sadlier and Grande Terre including the Île des Pins and its satellite Jackman, 2012 (n=1) and Rhacodactylus leachianus islands, whereas Correlophus ciliatus Guichenot, 1866 (n=1). Also, the alien Hemidactylus frenatus Dumeril is mostly known in the southern part of the Grande and Bibron, 1836 (n=3) has been sighted. E-mail: [email protected] During a helminthological examination of flathead knob-scaled lizards, Xenosaurus platyceps King and Thompson 1968, from Mexico, 4 of 10 were found to harbor 56 (14 male, 42 female) nematodes of an undescribed species of Spauligodon Skrjabin, Schikhobalova and Lagodovskaja, 1960. The lizard family Xenosauridae is composed of two well-differenti- ated genera: Shinisaurus in southern China and Xenosaurus in Mexico and Guatemala (Pérez-Ramos et al., 2000). Xeno- saurus platyceps is a stocky, medium-sized species endemic to the Mexican state of Tamaulipas where it occurs in dry oak and tropical deciduous forests of the Sierra Madre Oriental (Flores-Villela 1993; Flores-Villela and Gerez, 1994). The ecology of X. platyceps has been studied (Lemos-Espinal, 1997), but, to our knowledge, there are no helminthologi- cal reports for it. Currently, 43 species are assigned to Spauligodon; 20 from Palaearctic realm, 8 from Neotropical realm, 7 from Ethiopian realm, 4 from the Nearctic realm, 2 from the Indo-Pacific realm and 2 from the Australian realm (Bursey et al., 2005).

DSM, Tz. 1 - 142 pp. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Introduction The Eastern Arc Mountain forests in Mufindi District lie at the south-western extreme of the Eastern Arc. The forests are found on the Mufindi plateau at the top of the Mufindi escarpment. The plateau includes a mosaic of forest, commercial tea cultivation, pine and eucalyptus plantation, coffee and subsistence agriculture. The forests of Mufindi are highly fragmented and many of them show high levels of disturbance some of which dates back over 50 years. Lovett & Pócs (1993) suggest that parts of the larger Mufindi forests such as Kigogo were cultivated in the mid 19th Century and cite the presence of agricultural ridges under the forest.

RODRIGUES1 1Departamento de Zoologia, Instituto de Biociências, Universidade de São Paulo-SP and 2Departamento de Zoologia, Centro de Ciências Biológicas, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Brazil ABSTRACT The tetrapod limb is a highly diverse structure, and reduction or loss of this structure accounts for many of the limb phenotypes observed within species. Squamate reptiles are one of the many tetrapod lineages in which the limbs have been greatly modified from the pentadactyl generalized pattern, including different degrees of reduction in the number of limb elements to complete limblessness. Even though limb reduction is widespread, the evolutionary and develop- mental mechanisms involved in the formation of reduced limb morphologies remains unclear. In this study, we present an overview of limb morphology within the microteiid lizard group Gymn- ophthalmidae, focusing on digit arrangement. We show that there are two major groups of limb- reduced gymnophthalmids. The first group is formed by lizard-like (and frequently pentadactyl) species, in which minor reductions (such as the loss of 1-2 phalanges mainly in digits I and V) are the rule; these morphologies generally correspond to those seen in other squamates. The second group is formed by species showing more drastic losses, which can include the absence of an ex- ternally distinct limb in adults. We also present the expression patterns of Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) in the greatly reduced fore and hindlimb of a serpentiform gymnophthalmid.

We also summarized data on lizard faunas for nine other well-studied areas in Amazonia to make pairwise comparisons among sites. The Biogeographic Similarity Coefficient for each pair of sites was calculated and plotted against the geographic distance between the sites. A Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity was performed comparing all sites. A total of 114 species has been recorded in the four studied sites, of which 45 are lizards, three amphisbaenians, and 66 snakes. The two sites between the Xingu and Madeira rivers were the poorest in number of species, those in western Amazonia, between the Madeira and Juruá Rivers, were the richest. Biogeographic analyses corroborated the existence of a well-defined separation between a western and an eastern lizard fauna. The western fauna contains two groups, which occupy respectively the areas of endemism known as Napo (west) and Inambari (southwest). Relationships among these western localities varied, except between the two northernmost localities, Iquitos and Santa Cecilia, which grouped together in all five area cladograms obtained. No variation existed in the area cladogram between eastern Amazonia sites. The easternmost localities grouped with Guianan localities, and they all grouped with localities more to the west, south of the Amazon River.
