  • Filariasis and Its Control in Fujian, China
REVIEW FILARIASIS AND ITS CONTROL IN FUJIAN, CHINA Liu ling-yuan, Liu Xin-ji, Chen Zi, Tu Zhao-ping, Zheng Guo-bin, Chen Vue-nan, Zhang Ying-zhen, Weng Shao-peng, Huang Xiao-hong and Yang Fa-zhu Fujian Provincial Institute of Parasitic Diseases, Fuzhou, Fujian, China. Abstract. Epidemiological survey of filariasis in Fujian Province, China showed that malayan filariasis, transmitted by Anopheles lesteri anthropophagus was mainly distributed in the northwest part and bancrof tian filariasis with Culex quinquefasciatus as vector, in middle and south coastal regions. Both species of filariae showed typical nocturnal periodicity. Involvement of the extremities was not uncommon in mala yan filariasis. In contrast, hydrocele was often present in bancroftian filariasis, in which limb impairment did not appear so frequently as in the former. Hetrazan treatment was administered to the microfilaremia cases identified during blood examination surveys, which were integrated with indoor residual spraying of insecticides in endemic areas of malayan filariasis when the vector mosquito was discovered and with mass treatment with hetrazan medicated salt in endemic areas of bancroft ian filariasis. At the same time the habitation condition was improved. These factors facilitated the decrease in incidence. As a result malayan and bancroftian filariasis were proclaimed to have reached the criterion of basic elimination in 1985 and 1987 respectively. Surveillance was pursued thereafter and no signs of resurgence appeared. Most studies mainly focus on changes of ecological vulnerability concerning the temporal trend, but rarely take arid and semi-arid areas into consideration to explore the spatial heterogeneity of the ecological vulnerability index (EVI) there. In this study, we selected the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region on the Loess Plateau of China, a typical arid and semi-arid area, as a case to investigate the spatial heterogeneity of the EVI every five years, from 1990 to 2015. Based on remote sensing data, meteorological data, and economic statistical data, this study first evaluated the temporal-spatial change of ecological vulnerability in the study area by Geo-information Tupu. Further, we explored the spatial heterogeneity of the ecological vulnerability using Getis-Ord Gi*. Results show that: (1) the regions with high ecological vulnerability are mainly concentrated in the north of the study area, which has high levels of economic growth, while the regions with low ecological vulnerability are mainly distributed in the relatively poor regions in the south of the study area.

Evidence from Shanxi Province Abstract China’s national leaders see restructuring and diversification away from resource- based, energy intensive industries as central goals in the coming years. This paper ar- gues that the high turnover of leading cadres at the local level may hinder state-led greening growth initiatives. Frequent cadre turnover is intended to keep local Party secretaries and mayors on the move in order to curb localism and promote compliance with central directives. Yet, with average term lengths of between three and four years, local leaders’ short time horizons can have the perverse effect of discouraging them from taking on comprehensive restructuring, a costly, complex and lengthy process. On the basis of extensive fieldwork in Shanxi province during 2010 and 2011, the pa- per highlights the salience of frequent leadership turnover for China’s green growth ambitions. Key Laboratory of Crop Physiology and Ecology, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Beijing 100081, China; 3. Crop Research Institute of Ningxia Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, Yinchuan 750105, China) Abstract: The reasonable assessment of maize varieties in different ecological regions can allow temperature resources to be fully exploited and reach the goal of high yield and efficiency and is thus an important direction of modern maize development in China. In this study, a logistic power nonlinear growth model was used to simulate the accumulated temperature required for kernel dehydration to moisture contents of 25%, 20%, and 16% for various maize cultivar, which were divided into six types based on the accumulated temperature required for kernel dehydration to a moisture content of 25%. The relationship between the yield of maize cultivars and the accumulated temperature required for kernel dehydration to a moisture content of 25% was found to follow a unary function model. Changing the planted maize variety was found to increase economic returns by more than 7000 RMB/hm2 in Ningxia, Northwest China. Under the conditions of mechanical grain harvesting, economic benefits can be further increased by means of selecting high yields and fast-dehydrating varieties, selling when the grain dehydration is below 16%.
