Casey Brown About the Program Wesleyan women’s crew features a tradition few other programs can match, a tradition that dates to its elevation to varsity status in spring 1975. Wesleyan enjoyed its first undefeated season in 1986 and has duplicated the feat three times since then, in addition to five one-loss seasons. Wesleyan was the New Eng- land champion in 1987 and also placed second four times from 1986-90. The 1986 crew placed third in the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, a feat matched in 1991. Wesleyan enjoyed an 8-2 campaign in 2000, a season that saw a second-place finish in New England; the Cardinals placed third in New Eng- land in the 10-1 2001 season and fourth in 2004. In addition to a long-standing tradition of excellence on the water, Wesleyan rowers receive a first-rate education at one of the nation’s preeminent liberal arts institutions. Wesleyan is among the most selective institutions in the country, having admitted just 23 percent of applicants for the class of 2015. The Wes- leyan curriculum features no course requirements, a rarity among both large universitities and liberal arts colleges. The student-faculty ratio is 9:1, and Wesleyan’s faculty includes a Nobel laureate, Pulitzer Prize winner, MacArthur (“genius grant”) fellow, and numerous recipients of Rockefeller, Guggenheim, and other national prizes for teaching and research. The Wesleyan science faculty rank first among liberal arts colleges in federal grants received, receiving more than twice as much funding as the next highest school, and also rank first in H-index, which measures both number of publications and the number of times those publications are cited. Wesleyan is committed to meeting 100 percent of demonstrated financial need. Admissions are need- blind, and Weleyan students received over $41 million in financial aid during the 2010-11 academic year.

2012 Spring Outlook

During the spring season, Wesleyan will look to build on an outstanding fall season and continue its resurgence under third-year head coach Pat Tynan. Wesleyan opened the fall season with a pair of second-place showings, first in the Club 8 event at the Textile River Regatta in Lowell, Mass., followed by the Collegiate 8 event in the Head of the Connecticut in Middletown. Wesleyan followed that with an 11th-place finish at the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston, its best finish at the event in 10 years. The Cardinals concluded the fall season with a fourth-place finish of 18 entries in the Collegiate 8 event in the Head of the Fish in Saratoga, N.Y., trailing only Williams, William Smith and UConn. The spring season inaugurates on March 17 with a race featuring Rollins, Army and Embry-Riddle as part of the team’s annual training trip to Winter Park, Fla. Following that will be a home event, this time a dual race against Coast Guard on March 31. Front and center among spring NESCAC rivals is a race against seven-time defending national champion Williams on April 21. Wesleyan will also take on Trinity, Tufts, Bates, Colby and Middlebury, as well as local powers Smith, Wellesley and WPI. Wesleyan returns rowers who saw action in the varsity eight boat last spring, led by team captain Greer Dent ’12. Also among the returning V-8 crew are Kayla Cloud ’14, Clare Doyle ’14, Becky Gillig ’12, Yara Kass-Gergi ’12, Erin Kelly ’12, Megan Nash ’14 and Haley Sacks ’13. Avery Mushinski ’15 and Emilie Sinkler ’14, both of whom rowed in the varsity eight boat during the fall season, lead a strong group of upperclassmen, as 25 of the 39 rowers on the roster are freshmen or sophomores, including 17 first-years. 2011-12 Schedule/2010-11 Results

Built in 1992, then renovated in 1998, the Macomber Boathouse is the home for Wesleyan men’s and wom- en’s crew. Located just 1/2 mile from campus on the Connecticut River in the Harbor Park area of Middletown, the boathouse has two stories. On the upper level are locker rooms for both the men and women as well as two workout/meeting rooms and a balcony overlooking the river. On the lower level are three bays which provide ample storage for the teams’ top-of-the-line equipment.

Rowing Center

Located in the Freeman Athletic Center, the rowing center serves as the men’s and women’s crew teams’ prac- tice space during the winter months. The 1,300-square foot facility contains 25 ergs, a gamut ergometer, can weights, and a great audio setup, making it an invaluable addition to the teams’ facilities. Coaching Staff

Pat Tynan - Head Coach Seasons at Wesleyan: 3 (2009-pres.) Alma mater: UMass ’99 [email protected] ~ (860) 685-2922

Pat Tynan, who spent the 2008-09 season as assistant men’s lightweight crew coach at Yale University, was named faculty head coach of women’s crew at Wesleyan for the 2009-10 campaign. He is at the helm for a third season in 2011-12. A 1999 graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he was an integral member of the varsity lightweight crew, Pat began his coach- ing career as a men’s assistant at his alma mater for two seasons before head- ing to Colby College from 2001-06. There he assisted with both the men’s and women’s programs, helping the women’s novice crew win three New England championships. As interim head women’s crew coach at Williams College in 2006-07, Pat directed the Ephs to a New England and NCAA Division III title at the varsity eight level. Williams also captured a team title at the NCAAs in 2007. Before joining the Yale staff in 2008, Pat spent the 2007-08 season with a second stint at his alma mater, this time assisting with the women’s squad. A USRowing Level III certified coach, Pat also has a wealth of experience at summer rowing camps in Connecticut, Maine and Maryland over the last decade.

Steve Baranoski - Asst. Coach (1st season)

Steve Baranoski joins the Wesleyan women’s crew coaching staff for the com- petitive spring season in 2012 as an assistant. Steve is a 2011 graduate of Mari- etta College, where he majored in education and was a member of the varsity rowing team. He medaled in numerous races throughout his collegiate rowing career and competed in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Cham- pionships. During the summer of 2011, Steve coached with the Middletown (Conn.) Parks and Recreation rowing camp, working with both youth and masters athletes. This past fall, while teaching in the Meriden (Conn.) school system, he coached the varsity and JV girls at Middletown High School. Steve continues to row with the Hartford Rowing Club and is pursuing his Master’s degree at Wesleyan. Alumnae Spotlight

Kathy Keeler ’78

A three-sport standout at Wesleyan, Kathy Keeler stands as the only Wesleyan graduate to win an Olympic gold medal, stroking the wom- en’s eight crew to a top finish at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los An- geles. She has been a part of four U.S. national teams overall, including qualifying for the Olympic squad in 1980; she was also a member of the 1982 U.S. national team, stroking the women’s four to a silver medal at the World Rowing Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland. Keeler helped the Cardinals capture the women’s eight title at the 1978 Dad Vail Regatta, considered the national small-college cham- pionship. She coached the U.S. national team on six occasions after concluding her competitive rowing career and helped lead the U.S. women’s double to a silver medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in At- lanta. The current Cardinal women’s crew has a four-seat shell named in Keeler’s honor. Keeler was also a three-year member of the women’s basketball team in its early years and also played one season of field hockey. She led the basketball team in scoring and rebounding during her sophomore and junior years. Keeler was inducted into the Wesleyan Athletics Hall of Fame in May 2008 as a member of its inaugural class.

Amy Baltzell ’87

A two-time qualifier for the U.S. National Row- ing Team, Amy Baltzell started as a member of the Wesleyan women’s novice crew in 1983 before moving up to the varsity boat the next three sea- sons. She stroked the Cardinals’ varsity eight to a gold medal at the Dad Vail Regatta, considered the small college national championships, in 1987. In addition to her prowess in the boat, Baltzell was a member of the varsity basketball team during the 1983-84 season; she stands as one of only 10 Wesleyan players ever to record a double-double against Bowdoin. Baltzell qualified for the U.S. national team in 1989 and 1990 and also competed at the U.S. Good- will Games in 1991. She rowed for the U.S. national team at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. She earned a gold medal at the World Row- ing Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland, in 1991, and has also claimed medals at the Head of the Charles in Boston and the U.S. Nationals. Baltzell is also an experienced sailor, competing on the all-women’s America’s Cup A3 squad in 1995. She is currently a clinical assistant professor at the Boston University School of Education with a specialization in sport psychology. She has co-authored several publica- tions and presented at numerous workshops, clinics, programs, and conventions over the last decade. Baltzell is a member of the second Wesleyan Athletics Hall of Fame class, having been inducted in October 2008. Little Three In 1977, Amherst, Wesleyan and Williams began their annual competition for the Little Three title, the cov- eted prize in a rivalry that dates to the formation of the Triangular League in 1899. The title is decided at an an- nual race between the three schools, and the winner of the race takes home the Elizabeth Neal Award. Although Amherst no longer competes in the race, and so a Little Three title has not been awarded since 2008, Wesleyan and Williams still compete annually for the Neal Award. Wesleyan and Williams have won every Little Three title, with Williams winning the race 28 times (and taking 25 Little Three titles), while Wesleyan has seven titles to its credit.
