Wesleyan enjoyed its first undefeated season in 1986 and has duplicated the feat three times since then, in addition to five one-loss seasons. Wesleyan was the New Eng- land champion in 1987 and also placed second four times from 1986-90. The 1986 crew placed third in the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, a feat matched in 1991. Wesleyan enjoyed an 8-2 campaign in 2000, a season that saw a second-place finish in New England; the Cardinals placed third in New Eng- land in the 10-1 2001 season and fourth in 2004. In addition to a long-standing tradition of excellence on the water, Wesleyan rowers receive a first-rate education at one of the nation’s preeminent liberal arts institutions. Wesleyan is among the most selective institutions in the country, having admitted just 23 percent of applicants for the class of 2015. The Wes- leyan curriculum features no course requirements, a rarity among both large universitities and liberal arts colleges. The student-faculty ratio is 9:1, and Wesleyan’s faculty includes a Nobel laureate, Pulitzer Prize winner, MacArthur (“genius grant”) fellow, and numerous recipients of Rockefeller, Guggenheim, and other national prizes for teaching and research. The Wesleyan science faculty rank first among liberal arts colleges in federal grants received, receiving more than twice as much funding as the next highest school, and also rank first in H-index, which measures both number of publications and the number of times those publications are cited. Wesleyan is committed to meeting 100 percent of demonstrated financial need. Admissions are need- blind, and Weleyan students received over $41 million in financial aid during the 2010-11 academic year. 2012 SPRING OUTLOOK During the spring season, Wesleyan will look to build on an outstanding fall season and continue its resurgence under third-year head coach Pat Tynan. Wesleyan opened the fall season with a pair of second-place showings, first in the Club 8 event at the Textile River Regatta in Lowell, Mass., followed by the Collegiate 8 event in the Head of the Connecticut in Middletown. Wesleyan followed that with an 11th-place finish at the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston, its best finish at the event in 10 years. The Cardinals concluded the fall season with a fourth-place finish of 18 entries in the Collegiate 8 event in the Head of the Fish in Saratoga, N.Y., trailing only Williams, William Smith and UConn. The spring season inaugurates on March 17 with a race featuring Rollins, Army and Embry-Riddle as part of the team’s annual training trip to Winter Park, Fla. Following that will be a home event, this time a dual race against Coast Guard on March 31. Front and center among spring NESCAC rivals is a race against seven-time defending national champion Williams on April 21. Wesleyan will also take on Trinity, Tufts, Bates, Colby and Middlebury, as well as local powers Smith, Wellesley and WPI. Wesleyan returns eight rowers who saw action in the varsity eight boat last spring, led by team captain Greer Dent ’12. Also among the returning V-8 crew are Kayla Cloud ’14, Clare Doyle ’14, Becky Gillig ’12, Yara Kass-Gergi ’12, Erin Kelly ’12, Megan Nash ’14 and Haley Sacks ’13. Avery Mushinski ’15 and Emilie Sinkler ’14, both of whom rowed in the varsity eight boat during the fall season, lead a strong group of upperclassmen, as 25 of the 39 rowers on the roster are freshmen or sophomores, including 17 first-years. 2011-12 SCHEDULE/2010-11 RESULTS 2011-12 RESULTS/SCHEDULE 2010-11 RESULTS Oct. 2 (Sun.)
