Oceania Weightlifting Federation OCEANIA WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION Latest News August 2015 21 Countries competing 240 competitors National & International TV coverage Huge crowds IWF President attending History making AUS / NZL World class set-up The large crowd at the weightlifting stadium The Games are over. Weightlifting was undoubtedly one of the most successful sports at the Pacific Games. And for the very first time in Pacific Games history, Australia and New Zealand took part in the sport of weightlifting. In fact it was an Oceania Games for our sport. Port Moresby made history in weightlifting. For the first time ever, 21 countries took part. Only one country was missing and that was Northern Marianas. This was no fault of the NM Sports Federation. The weightlifting Association did not bother entering anyone. These Games attracted the highest number of competitors in its history. The television coverage was excellent. Four days of direct telecast. Brendon Telfer did a great job assisted by Luisa Peters and Lilly Coffa. The crowd was large, extremely enthusiastic and in some categories like the 53kg and 94kg, it was standing room only. For the first time in Games history, we had the pleasure of having the President of the International Weightlifting Federation , Dr. Tamas Ajan from Hungary in attendance. Also from Malaysia, we had the IWF Vice President and the President of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation, Dato Ong Poh Eng, together with Mr. Attila Adamfi the IWF Director General . We were also honoured with the attendance of Prince Andrew, Duke of York during the 48Kg category on the first day of the Games.. Mr Lyn Jones at his best in Port Moresby The warm up area at the Pacific Games The venue was of World Championships standard. The warm up area had 10 platforms – all ZKC equipment. All other facilities were provided in close proximity to the warm up area, such as the weigh-in, rest rooms, saunas, etc. At the opening ceremony, 50% of the countries’ flag bearers were weightlifters. Dika Toua was the final baton runner and she lit the torch. The loaders, with the assistance of the Institute lifters did a tremendous job for the four day duration. It was nice to see that Jerry Wallwork, OWF 1st Vice President, at the conclusion of the Games was awarded the best coach of the Games. Everyday we witnessed great battles, with many of the categories decided on the last lift. The technical officials did a splendid job. The competition ran smoothly with no hiccups at all. Garry Marshall, the OWF Technical Chairman, co- ordinated the technical team beautifully. Whilst the MC, Lyn Jones, as we have all come to expect - was the best of the best, assisted by Trent Dabwido who also did a great job. Bowen Stuart, Ian Moir and Trent Dabwido, set up the competition system which operated faultlessly throughout the tournament. Many thanks must go to the Government of PNG, the PNG National Olympic Committee, the Minister for Sport the Hon. Justin Tkatchenko , and of course Mr Andrew Daubney, the Marketing Manager of Trukai Industries. Without his assistance we would have faced difficulties in patching up the many areas which we had to coming up to the last few days before the Games started.. The Organising Committee of Weightlifting under the leadership of Sir John Dawanincura did an excellent job. I am glad that Sir John, three months prior to the Games took over the position of Competition Manager of Weightlifting. Prior to his appointment we were facing many hurdles but once he did take over things started to fall in to place. We all know that he faced an uphill battle against decisions which were not made in the interests of weightlifting. Yet he was able to force those decisions to be changed and at the end it paid off. The event ran like clock work and his small team of volunteers were absolutely superb. Sir John, everyone associated with weightlifting wants to say thank you for your outstanding efforts in making weightlifting one of the most, if not the most successful sport at the Pacific Games. Weightlifting has grown in leaps and bounds in this region especially in the Pacific Islands. This developmental success in the last 15 years must be attributed to ONOC/IOC, the IWF and the Oceania Weightlifting Institute for taking the sport to the high levels of participation and growth. Their collective contribution whether through funding, guidance, and the provision of opportunities that the Institute in New Caledonia has provided, has made weightlifting what it is today. OCEANIA CONGRESS On July 3rd, in the presence of Dr. Tamas Ajan – IWF President, Dato Ong – IWF Vice President, Mr. Attila Adamfi – IWF Director General, and Mr. Andrew Minogue – Executive Director of the Pacific Games Council, the OWF held its Annual Congress at the Ela Beach Hotel in Port Moresby. The Congress had the highest number of country attendance. Presentations, awards, and reports were made during the Congress. Fiji was awarded the 2016 Oceania Senior, Junior and Youth Championships and Olympic Qualification Event. The night before, on July 2nd, the OWF Executive Board meeting was held the Trukai Industries board room. A record 21 Countries attended the OWF Congress at the Ela Beach A special guest at the Congress – ONOC General .Secretary Hotel In Port Moresby. Two great lifters, Morea Baru (PNG) Gold in the Snatch, Nevo Ioane (SAM) Gold in the C&Jerk with Morea Baru Gold in the Total. “The Legend” Manuel Minginfel (FSM) wins Gold in the Snatch, Tevita Tawai (FIJ) takes Gold in the C&Jerk, Manuel takes Gold in the Total. “What a battle” Francois Etoundi (AUS) takes Gold in the Snatch, Toua Udia (PNG) wins Gold in the C&Jerk and in the Total . Malek Chamoun (AUS) wins Gold in the Snatch whilst young Petunu Opeloge (SAM) takes Gold in the C&Jerk and Total. The one and only “David Katoatau “ (KIR) wins all three Gold medals and puts on a show at the end of his third Clean & Jerk. Dika Toua, the golden girl of PNG, four times Olympian, won gold in the 53kg category. And a young man by the name of Steven Kari produced an outstanding performance in winning gold in the 94kg category. Both athletes are Hanuabada natives. The village in PNG is known as the golden village. These two athletes are the pride and joy of the seven and half million Papua New Guineans. At these Games on the Gold Coast next week, both lifters are going for back to back gold. It won’t be easy but they are very confident in pulling it off. But they will not be the only two lifters from Hanuabada looking for gold. There is another lifter, who is favourite in the 62kg category to win gold – Morea Baru. He is ranking first in the Commonwealth and well ahead of his oppositions. What a coup it would be, for the village of Hanuabada. A village which is in Port Moresby and thrives on producing international lifters. Steven Kari 2014 Glasgow Gold medallist Glasgow’s Gold medallist Dika Toua Dika Toua has competed at four Olympic Games with her best placing in 6th position at the Athens Games. The Gold Coast will be her fourth Commonwealth Games. She won silver in 2006 and gold in 2014.

Weightlifting was undoubtedly one of the most successful sports at the Pacific Games. For the first time at a Pacific Games we witnessed a World Youth Record. And for the very first time in Pacific Games history, the Oceania and Commonwealth Championships were held in conjunction with the games. For the first time ever, 25 countries took part. It was also history making when women participants in our sport was higher than the men. 109 women competed and 105 men competed. A total of 214 competitors. The television coverage was excellent with Brendon Telfer doing a great job as usual. The crowd was large and extremely enthusiastic. For the second time in the history of the games, we had the pleasure of having the President of the IWF, Dr. Tamas Ajan. Also for the first in attendance was the General Secretary of the IWF, Mohammed Jalood. From Malaysia we had the President of the CWF, Dato Ong Poh Eng. Attila Adamfi the IWF Director General was in attendance as the Technical Delegate. The venue was of World Championships standard. The warm up area had 9 platforms. All other facilities were provided within the stadium such as the weigh-in, rest rooms, saunas, and also anti-doping. It was nice to see so many lifters at the Opening Ceremony of the Pacific Games, chosen to be their countries flag bearers.

After eight long years of waiting, Ele Opeloge was awarded the silver medal which she rightfully deserved from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The first World Youth Champion from the region was Eileen Cikamatana from Fiji winning gold in the 69kg in the clean & jerk in Penang. Silver medal went to Kiana Elliot from Australia with a world class performance at the World Junior Championships in Georgia – our 15 lifters from 11 countries did a great job at the Rio Olympic Games. The performance in Rio by our two 62kg category lifters – Morea Baru from PNG and Nevo Ioane from Samoa – was brilliant. These are only some of the achievements of the OWF during 2016: The magnificent technical seminar held in Suva, upgraded 16 technical officials from the Pacific Islands to international category two level. The outstanding Oceania Championships and Olympic Qualification event was held in Suva, Fiji. And also the extraordinarily successful OTIP program and subsequent OTIP training camp in New Caledonia. It gives us immense pride and satisfaction in highlighting the OWF achievements for this year: FEBRUARY 2016 – EMAIL PACIFIC ISLANDS TOURNAMENT The 2016 Pacific Islands Email tournament turned out to be another great success. This tournament is producing some excellent results every year and it is good for the island nations as it kick starts their year of competition.

    April 06 , 2018 06 April, 2018 KARACHI: As expected Pakistan’s rookie weightlifter Talha Talib handed Pakistan a respect when he not only lifted bronze but also created a snatch record in the Commonwealth Games 62 kilogramme weightlifting competitions in Gold Coast, Australia, on Thursday. The 18-year old Talha from Gujranwala, who was expected to take either gold or silver, had to content with the bronze by lifting a weight of 283 kilogramme in the 62kg competitions. He lifted 132 kg in snatch, creating Games record. His effort in clean and jerk remained 151 kg that helped the youngster to give Pakistan its first medal of the 71-nation Games which had been formally opened on Wednesday. Talha also made his Games debut. Last year in the same city Talha had clinched gold in the Commonwealth Junior Championship and silver in the senior category of the event. His best effort in snatch in his gold-studded stint in the junior category was 126 kg, which shows that he has improved a lot. The gold went to Malaysia’s Muhammad Aznil Bidin with a total of 288kg which carried 126 in snatch and 162 in clean and jerk. Morea Baru of Papua New Guinea got silver with a total of 286 kg, 127kg in snatch and 159kg in clean and jerk. Meanwhile Pakistan’ most experienced weightlifter Abdullah Ghafoor failed to impress, finishing sixth in the 56kg competitions out of 12 competitors. Lahore-born 31-year old Abdullah lifted a total weight of 226kg which included 101kg in snatch and 126kg in clean and jerk.

    OCEANIA WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION AFFILIATED TO THE INTERNATIONAL WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION 27th July, 2006 APIA - THE NEW WORLD OF WEIGHTLIFTING The crowd On July 11th – 15th, Apia, Samoa, played host to 30 countries during the Commonwealth, Oceania and South Pacific Championships, (Junior & Senior) and also the 1st Pacific Rim International Tournament. The new weightlifting stadium where the Oceania Weightlifting Institute is based came alive at 5.00pm on July 12th, when a packed stadium welcomed the 30 countries to Samoa and set up a new era for the sport of weightlifting in this region. A very proud, Prime Minister of Samoa and Patron of the Oceania Weightlifting Federation, the Hon Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi praised the Oceania & Samoa Weightlifting Federations on producing such a world class event and in doing so creating a path whereby next year the weightlifting event of the South Pacific Games will be of equal standard. This international event was supported by the Government of Samoa through the South Pacific Games Authority as these championships were a test event for the South Pacific Games next year. The Championships was sponsored by Telecom Samoa and was a direct live telecast by SBC. The telecast was on for three and half days. It was also telecast live to quite a few countries in the Oceania region but more important it was telecast live three hours a day to China with an estimated viewing audience in excess of 300 million. The two national newspapers, Samoa Observer and Newsline made a superb coverage for the duration of the Championships. With front page, back page and inside pages all carrying stories and pictures of the event.

    Oceania Weightlifting Federation Latest News September , 2010 INSTITUTE LIFTERS RECEIVE LONDON 2012 IOC SCHOLARSHIP Six Pacific lifters, four from the Oceania Weightlifting Institute and two from Samoa (former Institute lifters) have been awarded London 2012 IOC scholarships. This is certainly a tribute to weightlifting in the Pacific, the fact that the IOC has recognized the potential of these athletes in the lead up to the London Olympic Games.     OCEANIA WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION Latest News August 2016 GREAT NEWS… Ele Opeloge, Olympic silver medallist ??? Weightlifting in the Pacific really needed this exciting news. Even though it is eight years late and under circumstances that should never have occurred. However, it shows that the lifters of the Pacific are on par with the rest of the world, if we eliminate drug cheats from the equation. Ele Opeloge, the +75kg category super athlete from Samoa made news one week ago when the +75Kg silver and bronze medallists from the 2008 Beijing Olympics were found positive by the second wave of testing – reanalyses of samples - by the IOC. Therefore, the silver medal will be awarded to the rightful athlete and that is Ele Opeloge, once all procedures are concluded. In advance the OWF congratulates this great athlete in becoming the first female athlete ever from the Pacific to win an Olympic medal and the 3rd overall in the Pacific. The 1st Olympic medal was won at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games by Paea Wolfgramm where he won a silver medal in boxing. Then at the Rio Olympics, a gold medal was won by Fiji in the seven a side rugby. And now a silver to Ele Opeloge in weightlifting. The people of Samoa very much deserve this Olympic medal. The country has promoted weightlifting for many years. They have the best weightlifting auditorium in the world. They have brilliant facilities thanks to the support of the Government especially the Hon. Prime Minister of Samoa Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, and most important the Wallwork family starting from Seiuli Paul Wallwork who was a great weightlifter in the past and President of the Oceania Weightlifting Federation from 1992 to 2008.

    Oceania Weightlifting Federation Latest News March 31 , 2011 INSTITUTE LIFTERS SUCCESSFUL AT THE 2011 ARNOLD INTERNATIONAL. The highlight of this years Arnold International Tournament held in Columbus – Ohio on March the 5th was the Pacific Islands against the USA team. There were some excellent results from both teams. The six Oceania institute lifters representing the Pacific Islands were : Manueli Tulo (Fiji), Manuel Minginfel (FSM), Yukio Peter, Itte Detenamo (Nauru), Steven Kari (Papua New Guinea) and David Katoatau (Kiribati). The event was brilliantly organised by the competition directors, Mark Canella and Dan Bell. The volunteers were superb and the crowds were outstanding. A special thanks must also go to Stephen Powell, Ryan Kyle and Rachel Crass for assisting the Pacific Island team during the competition. It was also great to see Arnold Schwarzenegger at the competition. It makes a lot of difference when you have a person like Arnold make an appearance and take a Arnold Schwarzenegger with some of the Pacific genuine interest in an event such as this. The Institute looks forward to a rematch Islands Team members. against USA next year – hopefully this time with a full team. NAURU VISIT The General Secretary of the OWF, Paul Coffa, on February 13th returned to Nauru after a spell of 10 years. Weightlifting is still a leading sport on the island, with an enormous number of kids training at the gym. Whilst he was there he attended the Tyoni Batsiua Memorial Cup with 31 lifters taking part. A coaching seminar was held during his visit. The Nauru Weightlifting Federation held its AGM, with a new President and General Secretary being elected .
