a myriad of spectacular site-specific installations. in keeping with the mission of the watermill center, the artists work together with robert wilson and summer program participants to realize large-scale works and performances from initial concepts to physical completion. this focus on collaboration and the formation of international networks sets the watermill residencies apart from many residency programs: it fosters the exchange of artistic ideas while giving participating artists international exposure. concurrently, many of the program participants have the unique opportunity of working closely with and learning from artists who can already look back on a developed body of work and experience. 17 atopos contemporary visual atopic bodies is an ongoing project exploring the ARTISTS ARTWORKS SHOWS FAIRS AUCTIONS MAGAZINE MORE These 15 Galleries Are Putting New Cities on the Art World’s Map ARTSY EDITORIAL BY ALEXXA GOTTHARDT FEB 8TH, 2017 1:12 AM The majority of the art world’s infrastructure—from galleries and museums to public funding to art criticism and press—is concentrated in a handful of major urban centers including New York, London, Berlin, and Hong Kong. However, this hasn’t deterred an increasing number of tenacious gallerists from opening art spaces well beyond the comforts of established art-world hubs, and taking big financial risks in the process. For many, the remote locations have been the impetus. Their goal: to expose local artists to an international set of collectors and curators, and likewise to bring the international art community into their emerging, at times far-flung, art scenes. For the below 15 galleries, hailing from San Juan to Cluj and Accra to Bangalore, the risks have paid off. And they are galvanizing their surrounding creative communities and turning the art world’s attention to their hometowns in the process. Setting the stage for the gallery’s community-focused program, the show included 50 people from Clottey’s collective, GoLokal, who poured into Accra’s streets as part of a corresponding performance.

  • Evan Gruzis *Atavistic Zen*
Evan Gruzis *Atavistic Zen* Opening: Saturday, April 26, 2014: 6 - 9 pm On view: April 28 - June 7, 2014 In “Atavistic Zen”, his fourth solo presentation at DUVE Berlin, Evan Gruzis considers the frame as subject within the transformation of his own process. Inspired by Dōgen Zenji, the Japanese Zen Buddhist teacher, Gruzis creates a unique body of work that explores the visualization of tension found in chaos and the more calculable wave form. “Atavistic Zen” showcases Gruzis’s recent experimentation with materials. Textile dyeing techniques are incorporated into his canvases and his works on paper reveal an acute focus on surface and texture. The sound sculpture, “Modulation Garden”, plays with the use of recording effects to create hypnotic overlapping rhythms that are both an aural counterpart to his paintings and an homage to Berlin’s minimal dub techno tradition. Gruzis’s new dye paintings paradoxically combine ubiquitous themes such as the frame within a frame and the repetition of gesture through complex craft. By dyeing some of his canvases, he is recognizing the fabric as an object in and of itself – a temporal sculptural intervention in his process. The result is a substrate that appears to contain an artifact of the manufactured, something produced without conscious thought. This relationship to objecthood and artifice is then made explicit with Gruzis’s painted-on borders and floating rectilinear passages that exploit art’s most basic tropes. In his texture-focused works, Gruzis creates visually vibrating patterns of paint that emote a kind of hallucinatory sublime. Radial stripe patterns interfere with layers of acrylic that are “raked” into cascading paths.
