    Community Read 2016 Grandma Gatewood’s Walk by Ben Montgomery The Longwood Gardens Library and Archives staff invites you to use the following guide to discuss the topics of our 2016 Community Read book. An Overview: Determined – Resourceful – Tenacious – Secretive – Nature lover – Self-educated – Poet These are just a few descriptors that come to mind as one reads the inspirational story of a 67-year- old great-grandmother who was the first woman to complete a solo 2,050 mile thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 1955—May 3rd through September 25th. Throughout her lifetime, Emma Gatewood, otherwise known as Grandma Gatewood, seemed to be unknowingly preparing for this walk. She had always relished walks in the woods, communing with nature, gardening, and farming. Through raising eleven children and doing all the manual work on a farm, Emma acquired the skills of perseverance, self-reliance, and resourcefulness. Her wilderness survival skills as well as her strong desire for independence were honed partially as a result of her ability to survive a brutally abusive 30-plus year marriage. Her numerous hikes in area woods provided her with a restorative sense of peace as well as an escape from her husband’s tyranny. Although Emma received formal education through the 8th grade, her insatiable thirst for knowledge continued throughout her life. She learned through extensive reading and practical experience, e.g., learning about woodland flora and fauna on her many walks. Not only did the woodlands provide a respite for Emma, but they also inspired her to explore her creative side— writing poetry.

It will discuss why the trail was built, who the first thru-hikers were, and why thru-hiking suddenly increased in popularity in the 1970s. The Appalachian Trail was built to be a place for personalized recreation apart from modern society. Entrenched in how Americans have used the trail is a socially constructed dualism which places civilization and wilderness on opposite ends of the spectrum of human control. Overtime, the trail became a place where growing numbers of people went for prolonged but temporary periods. By the 1970s, a sudden increase of hikers began to take vacations from civilization for months at time. In record numbers long- distance-trekkers began hiking the entire Appalachian Trail in a single trip.

A hop, skip and jump from West Virginia, really. When Emma was born, there were about 2,000 people living in the whole township - and it might have felt as though Emma's family was half of it! In her household, there was her father, Hugh, her mother, Esther Evelyn; and 15 children, including Emma. Emma grew up helping with the household's endless chores - hoeing the corn, planting the beans and pumpkins, and worming and suckering the tobacco. She milked the cows; washed dishes; made sausage, lard and head cheese; mended and washed clothes; and cooked. Eventually Emma met a young man named Perry Clayton Gatewood who liked to be called P.C. She would ride behind him on a horse and, one time, she fell off because she wasn't bold enough to put her arms around him to hang on.

Welcome For the past decade, our community has joined together to share not just outstanding literature, but great ideas. The incredible roster of authors and topics through the years is proof that our Library serves as more than just a reading room and is a dynamic public space in which the community can come to share a common conversation and, hopefully, come away entertained, informed and enlightened. Grandma Gatewood’s Walk continues this tradition of offering selections which challenge how we think about the world around us. Whether it’s the idea of personal reinvention or simply seeing life through a different lens, we hope this title will foster meaningful discussions and an enhanced sense of community. Emma Gatewood, at the age of 67, tackled the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail in 1955, and became the first woman to hike the entire trail alone.
